okay

we rarely ever talk abt photographers/DOPs/Cinematographers or their work here...

its not tht noticable but some films have a really stunning visual impact...they have a distictive visual pallete which also plays a major part in taking the narrative forward...Avatar is a good example...however it need not just be a film with gr8 visual effects..

so which films did u think made a gr8 impact visually??? with some good camerawork, lighting and framings n stuff...the kind ud think "oooh soo pretty"...

my favourites would be :

Lagaan - gorgeously shot...all the deserted landscapes were captured beautifully, the way the songs were shot (especially radha kaise na jale) were soo beautiful...

Saawariya - all tht blue, black n purple put some ppl off but i found it quite innovative...the film sucked though...but thts a different story...i think a lot of the times, i found myself awed at the camera work and the sets rather than the film itself so it took some attention away from the shittiness of the film which is gr8 work by the DOP..😆...Same can be said abt devdas and HDDCS..

Mani ratnam films in general always have some amazing photography...Guru, Raavan, Dil se are all such beautifully shot films...he always captures nature and natrual locations so wonderfully without relying on the big huge sets or special effects...

Johnny gaddar - its an unusual choice, but if u watch the film closely, u'll see that every scene has something "red" in it...someones wearing red, or the background is red, or therz red in the burgers tht the characters are eating...and the colour is specifically highlighted to give it a sin city like feel...i thought tht was pure genius in terms of visual presentation...especially for a caper thriller...

any more films which u thought were visually pleasing or innovative?

share ur thoughts...

🥳 Great topic Smarie! Some of my favorites are Jodhaa Akbar, Lagaan, Robot (yes, the movie was tacky but song visuals from Peru and South America were breathtaking!), and SLB's earlier films like HDDCS and Devdas as you mentioned. Also, Taal was visually stunning!

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was good too, it captured Gujrat - the temple ruins where Ash and Salman were taking pheras, loved that scene. Ash's introduction was amazing too.

SLB's films, if nothing else, are visually stunning for sure. Same with Mani Ratnam's films. Even Gowariker's films are visually appealing usually.

Barfi was visually BEAUTIFUL...I remember reading this interview of the cinematographer and he talked about how he used all these color palettes to show the different moods of the film...it was quite interesting..never realized so much work and thought goes into that aspect of filmmaking.

The song in the desert with Aish and Rajni took place in Lenis Maranhenses National Park in northeastern Brazil.

of the recent films...

id say Kahaani coz it almost made Kolkata look like a character in the film rather than a setting...the hustle - bustle, the durga puja...the tiny lil gallis everything was captured perfectly...Kolkata never looked so appealing to me b4 onscreen...😊

Barfi was pretty good too in tht aspect...it captured those darjeeling locations, the lil things like floating paper boats, howrah bridge n stuff really well.. there was some good imagery there...

I must mention Pardes too, that had some amazing scenes, especially those in the song I Love My India.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge was nicely picturized too.
