I do agree with anonymous for the most part. Hollywood is not the greatest example.

M Night Shymalan, a minority, directed Avatar The Last Airbender. And he cast whites for roles that were clearly Asian. He did cast Dev Patel, but I think that was much after he got backlash; and it still doesn't make up for the lack of East Asians as the main protagonist characters.

Then there's 21, Mariane Pearl (who I think was biracial) as mentioned by anonymous, and probably many other examples.

How is it not an insult to say Bollywood has a long way to go because they're not like Hollywood which casts black actors in black roles? I just pointed out that they don't do that always either. Race relations are huge political issue due to America's past of slavery and the civil rights struggle. They used to paint white actors faces black and make them do the roles. It's became an ugly issue when black actors existed but didn't get any roles. That's why it's such a big deal now if they do such things. And yet it happens sometimes like the Angelina Jolie example. It happens FREQUENTLY with other races though, like Indian and other Asians and Latinos because there is no big history of abuse related to them.

In India's case, there is not any huge political issue over it so it's not a big deal. It's also very difficult to even find actors with the East Asian/mongoloid features that Mary Kom has. If there were actors like that available but were getting bypassed for Priyanka, it would make sense to complain.

They can have auditions to try to get someone new but it would be incredibly hard. Not only that, the film would be a certified flop even before it began. Films can't be made for charity.

I just don't think there is any comparison to be made with Hollywood in this instance. BW definitely has a long way to go in other things like scripts but not something like this.

That's exactly why I said present times if you remember. In present times, its more of an anomaly when you see a White actor do a Black person's role...that's not the norm anymore. Of course that is not to say exceptions don't exist. They do. But its not the norm anymore.

And please its not my fault if you're so touchy about Bollywood. I did not mean it as an insult but if you're hell bent on making it out to be some sort of an offense, then suit yourself. How on earth is it an insult? Hollywood, bollywood, foreign cinema are all different types of film industries. Since when is it offensive to compare one to another? Sheesh...

I dont know what the problem is. But somehow I cant imagine HR and KKK the supposed cast in those roles. There was an article on the film being stalled. Maybe its everything-cast, script and money involved.

I'm not touchy about Bollywood at all. I'm sorry but that comment sounded so pretentious and condescending. 😕

Priyanka to play Mary Kom

-- Hollywood would not do that. Bollywood has a long way to go.

Um.

They did it a lot with black actors. They don't do it now so much (even here there are exceptions) because it's too delicate a political issue. They still do it very very frequently with other races like Asians.

BW needs to improve on a lot of things but that Hollywood comment in this case was just bizarre. JMO. Anyway I'm out, this was way too much time in this topic. 😆

Not really. It's just that they are not stars in the Hindi film industry. Forget going to the NorthEast industries. I'm sure there are probably some theatre actors that can fit the bill.

I already said "I am talking about present times not back in the days" in my first post itself. I know they used to paint faces black instead of casting Black actors...that's a part of America's murky past. I am aware of it and no one is denying that. However, it is also true that in present times for the most part, they do try to do justice to the roles. Let me reiterate again, yes there are exceptions as there will be in every given situation.

As for me being condescending, you're sorely mistaken. Why would I be condescending towards Bollywood? I enjoy Bollywood films as much as the next person. If you think I was being condescending, then I can also say that I think you're being overly touchy about a simple comparison. On that note, I don't think there's much to argue here anymore. So ciao.

Hmm, last I'd heard was that the script was still being adapted and they were trying to find an actress. Lots of names being thrown around...Kareena, Deepika, Priyanka, Vidya..Hrithik seemed more or less confirmed though..

I haven't read the book yet. It's sitting on my desk..winter vacation is for it 😆

And here i was reading according to some posters

that "PC is on her way out". 😆

hats off to SLB for even attempting something out of the
box.

and with PCs physicality, (she has even hosted the
TV reality show Khatarone ke khiladi or something,
and her acting chops, she is going to rock it.

Who would hv thought PC would play a mentally retarded
childlike Jhilmil with so much panache after all?

Great going, PC! I hope people dont look at her legs more
than her acting tho in the film😕 she will hv to wear shorts
and ganji a lot.
