Hello Debaters,

I will try to come up with a quote/proverb each week for us to debate. You can either debate "for"
the quote or "against" the quote. At end of the week we can have "Winner Of The Quote" Winner will be voted by members. Members can either PM me with their vote or post their vote in the thread when we are ready to vote. Also, if you would like to share any quotation or proverb to discuss please send me a PM.

So quote for this week is ----Fate is the same for the man who holds back, the same if he fights hard. We are all held in a single honor, the brave with the weaklings. A man dies still if he has done nothing, as the one who has done much. –Homer, Iliad

So let's start our debate on what you think about this quote. Do you agree with Homer? or You disagree?

Isn't The Iliad about fighting for lust, honor, betrayal and even more fighting? Thats what I figured when I watched Troy *ing Brad Pitt. From the story, the son of king of Troy steals the wife of rival king. The rival king goes to war against Troy, this power hungry apparently just found the reason to invade Troy. He had the most powerful weapon, Achilles- the greatest warrior on earth. And the story goes on...
This quote might make sense in Homeric literature and stories of those times, but not in practical world. Do you think death is the ultimate fate of the man? If yes, then I agree with quote, all is sand and water in the end. Even Kabir said something similar: Chalti chakki dekh kar diya Kabira roya, Dui paatan ke beech mein sabit bacha na koye. But in life there so much in between awakening and death that I hardly see feasibility of Mr. Homer's quote.

Yes, Bhilwara, you are right. Iliad is about Troy story about honor, betrayal and more fights.

Point about life that it is so much in between awakening and death is all human "imagination". Is there a soul? We don't know. Is there a re-birth? We don't know. It is all interpretation by us humans. Each religion teach us different belief and this set or group of people believe that and treat their life that way. Some believe in reincarnation and try to be good in this birth and keep themselves away from bad deeds, some belive in moksha.

In short, I think I agree with Homer. After all it's all is sand and water in the end. Ultimate proven truth to us human is death.

First of all, Thanks a TON sowmyaa di for reviving this age old tradition of DM 😃 👏 ..I really love this quote debate contest!! 😛

I will disagree with Homer.
For me, This quote is more dark and morbid .. We have seen great fighters and strugglers in history over centuries. Humans are all the same basically but can be categorized into different types. For me humans are either Fighters/ Strugglers or Weak/self-constructed hopeless cases (better word is couch potatos 😛 😆 ).

Life is not a bed of roses. There are different highs and lows in every Homo Sapien's life (even in animals.. the only point it that they can't narrate their fantastic stories to us ). It is a journey to the unknown. Leaving everything to fate is totally non-sense for me. Remember, Revolutionists are never born, they are MADE by continuous struggle and strength of ones persona.

One man can influence thousands, One poet can wake up the whole nation, One leader can put the centuries old suppressed nation in the battle ground to fight and win..All this is possible by the immense power of hope, determination and courage.

I don't deny the cycle of life and death, But there is absolutely an enormous difference in dying with dignity and in such a way that people remember you, and dying with nonentity. That difference arises due to the courage of human to achieve the apparently unachievable!
