CHAPTER 41:
Maan was back in the gym. Punching and kicking in the air to blow off his pent up energy. The raging turmoil however refused to die down.
It was more than an hour and still Maan was viciously practicing is Tai-Chi. His restless mind was grasping for calm while his heart was beating hard. "Just a small slip of her tongue and you are wrecked inside out Maan!" He chided himself again and again. She is a female, not to be trusted, his mind screamed. Look where trust has gotten you so far. Stay away from thinking these thoughts. He shut his eyes tight trying to block the thoughts his mind was bringing to him. "What about when we have our…." But this time the shut eyes could not squeeze out the image forming in his head.
A beautiful little girl with Geet's eyes.
He tried to evade it but her giggling and toddling steps with a mischievous smile adorning her beautiful face followed by a scolding Geet, entrenched in his heart and his heart screamed out loud to hold onto this image. Deep in his heart rose a desire to fulfill the unspoken request. His lonely soul screamed for a place to belong, to have a family with Geet.
He wanted that image to be his reality. He wanted to dream the dream he thought had been shattered forever. But it was too painful by far to even think along those lines.
Instead he concentrated on Geet. He wanted her. He wanted to love her and see her smiling, to become part of everything he isolated himself from. Deep down the urge was clawing itself out to belong to someone wholly. To love and be loved like only Geet could love him. In spite of all the resistance he threw her way, he knew she loved him, her eyes could never hold her secret from him. His torturous mind wanted so badly to be able to accept and reciprocate her love.
But he could not. He just could not!
In defeat he indulged his mind to accept that thought. She would never know all the ways he wanted to show his love but in his head he let himself open his arms wide to her, a long lovely life with her, waking up in her arms, teasing her watching her mouth form in that "O" that she did. He smiled at his secret fantasy, finding some solace in her thoughts.
Again Geet's face came to fore. Her haunted eyes, her pained expressions, her confused state. Maan stood there like a statue, his stance defeated, surrounded by an empty silence.
Feelings and words enshrouded him, making him go crazy. Just now he had made a decision and again he was at war with himself, a voice whispering that it was wrong! He was wrong.
But the silence started screaming at him, voices from his past echoed within, trying to deracinate the feelings taking root in his heart. The dream which had haunted him last night came to mind.
He ruffled his hair helplessly, seeking some solution to his agonized state of confusion. As if in answer to his unsaid prayer, he saw Geet beneath the window. She was with Naintara and another woman who he assumed was the kid's mother.
Sunlight was falling on her face, making it look ethereal. Her smile outshone the sun, according to him. He closed his eyes, feeling her around him, soothing him in her arms, as she had done that night.
He felt peace. After a long time he felt at peace with his life.
Opening his eyes, he saw her. She was as beautiful within as she was from outside, in fact her beauty paled in comparison to her goodness. She was an angel sent here for him, to remove the pain from his life and bring light and laughter back into his life.
And that was the moment he came to a decision. This was too precious to let go. Geet was too precious to let go. Thinking over the days he had spent with her his mind finally accepted her into his heart. He wanted to break away from the dark shadows in his life and love again and be loved by her.
But first he had to tell her everything. She had to choose if she was willing to accept flawed life with him. But he would stand by her, never letting anyone disrespect her ever. She deserved the whole truth and he was willing to take a risk again.
He would keep all his cards on the table, and let her decide. A shadow of pain passed him when he thought of his life's darkest secret and the promise he wanted her to make. But that was the only way to move forward. He was being a selfish b******, but he was tired of fighting fate; he would leave it in her hands for a change and let her decide his destiny.
========
Having made his decision, he hurried out, making his way home, wanting to catch her before she left. Disappointingly, the room was empty. He looked at the clock; it was still early so where did she go? His eye fell on a piece of paper on the coffee table. It was a note saying that she was leaving early to catch up on all that was pending for the party, bursting his bubble. Now that he had made a decision, he was too impatient to wait.
Here he wanted to talk to her and see her, plan a new life with her but fate had other plans.
==========
All day his hand itched close to the phone to hear her voice. He was busy with last minute details and the party, but he somehow found the time to think about her once in a while. Truthfully, it would be more correct that he found time to do some work amidst his daydreaming session. Finally, unable to hold onto his emotions, he called her at noon on the pretext of dropping by for lunch only to find that she was out with Naintara and Annie, shopping! "Dashed again." he sighed, "Looks like this is not my day."
"Maan you made her wait all these days, your wait is only a few hours." He chided himself, a shy smile adorning his face. Today he had a happy glow on his face. Pari almost did not recognize him; he looked so young and carefree.
He snapped out of his daydream when Dev came to remind him of the party. "As if he could ever forget it!" He cursed himself for the idea now. All he wanted right now was to throw Geet over his shoulder and take her somewhere private so that he could talk to her, spend some time with her! But no! He was going to have to suffer through the damn evening, trying to act as if he was not affected by all those men leaching over his wife!
But he was going to have to do something! And soon.
For such a closed person, showing of affection could not be at all easy. He was bad with words. He had never opened his heart to anyone before, not even…. "No Maan! Don't go there! Don't think about her. You have decided to move ahead with Geet if she will have you, don't let the past cloud you again."
He racked his brains for a way to tell Geet what he wanted to. He did not remember the last time he had done anything to show his affection to anyone. What did those TV commercials show, ah, breakfast in bed? That he could do. Sigh. He would have to wait for tomorrow for that!
He got an urgent call from Adi, which made him go to KC to look over some deal. Finishing it, he left while still pondering over his dilemma only to be stopped at every signal with a red light. As he waited for the light to turn, a small kid kept pestering him to buy some flowers. "Saab le lo na, Memsaab khush ho jayega." Words struck his brain finally and for the first time ever Maan Singh Khurana bought a rose from a street boy.
He reached home and parked his car, excited and nervous about what he was going to do.
Trepidation shot through him as he opened the door, the flower in hand, only to find Dev and Naintara waiting there.
And Maan Singh Khurrana was stuck with a rose in his hand.
