Short chapter ladies... (very short... and unproofed... wrote it when I woke up at 3 am!)
Chapter 47: Uncharted Waters
By the time he showered and dressed, light was starting to fall outside. He walked to the front of the house to hear the same mantra that she did every night.
"Deepam... Deepam..."
She was carrying the small lit lamp in her hands and walking slowly and with concentration rather than the speed-racing that she had done that first night when he had arrived. He watched her for a moment before noticing that Pallavi was nearby as well, leaning against one of the columns by the long porch ledge, a cup of tea forgotten in her hands. She set it down on the ledge and straightened when Kashi placed the lamp in the center of the verandah and they both stood there for a moment with their eyes closed. He felt a tugging at the edge of his top and looked down to see Nalan standing right by him. The boy smiled but made no other noise as he too turned to watch the two women in the light of the evening lamp in silence. Arnav felt a warming in his chest as he watched them, feeling strangely as if he belonged somewhere for the first time since his sister died. He didn't know how two women and a boy who had been virtual strangers until four days ago could seem more a family to him than he had allowed anyone to be for fifteen years. Maybe that was the true maya of the house... For all of its unexplained phenomenon and voodoo, its most incredible magic was this... these three people... And what happened to him when he was with them... He was not afraid of the house... He was no longer unsettled by ghost sightings or mad men or shared dreams or powerful curses...
What he was afraid of was whether this right here was all an illusion...
Whether when the end of the week came, the warped clock in this twilight zone that he found himself in would suddenly strike midnight and everything would go poof and vanish...
Whether the fairies and their god-child would disappear just like that, mocking him for the mock family that he had unknowingly built up in his head...
Maybe that was the true curse of the house... You will find what you most ardently wanted... What you didn't even know you did, and then it will show you how stupid you were to think that you could truly hold onto it...
The thought struck him as somber and melodramatic simultaneously... He was glad then than his mind, in truly uncharted waters, decided to bask in the glow of this illusion rather than reject and dismantle it for its potential for deceit and mockery.
