I know this was supposed to be a J Maan update, and I was even writing it, but then I heard this song and this part just flashed through my mind.

Sonu Nigam's voice just has that something that he can portray any emotion.

CHAPTER 39:

Maan walked off listlessly, trying to put a stop to all the memories crowding in his brain, that were a persistent reminder of his haunted past. No matter how far he went in life, he could never escape those voices which kept taunting him, taunting his mother, for the mistakes of his father.

He was dead inside, the past having played its cruel games too long for his soul to have remained unscathed. His mother had done her best, but she could never be everywhere to protect the small child form the brutalities of the world.

Maan had grown up knowing he was different, he didn't have something which all his so-called friends had.

A father.

That itself had made him different.

The taunts he had had to endure from others, coupled with his mother's silence on the subject had made Maan turn into an introvert, keeping to himself, so that he did not have to answer questions for which he had no answers.

He had grown up being labeled a B*****, for the simple reason that his so called father did not have the guts to accept his mother in front of his family.

Anjali Khurrana had been the secretary of Virmaan Singh Khurana. Both had fallen in love and wanted to get married. But the Khuranas wouldn't hear of a mere secretary being the bahu of their royal esteemed family and had threatened to disown Virmaan if he insisted on marrying Anjali. And so Virmaan had caved into family pressure and left Anjali.

Alone and pregnant.

Being labeled an illegitimate child had made Maan the object of mockery and ridicule during his forming ears. His mother too had had to suffer the tag of being an unmarried mother, and that was something which Maan could never forgive the Khuranas' for.

He had worked hard and excelled in his studies, gaining scholarships. He had been helped by Darji a lot in his life. Darji had been a constant presence in his life as long as he could remember. He didn't know who Darji was then, but now he did. Savitri Devi had made him take care of her only son's 'mistake'. But Anjali had refused to abort the child, and years later when Darji had met them, he had realized that Maan was a Khurana. On Anjali's insistence he had never revealed to Maan his father's name, but had quietly helped Anjali with Maan's upbringing. He had played the role of a benefactor and guardian in Maan's life.

When Maan had passed his degree in Architecture, Darji had recommended him to SD and she had employed an uncouth youth, who had nothing more than a few certificates to his resume. But a burning zeal to learn and be successful in life had burned in his eyes even then.

Both had had no idea about their so-called blood bond, and had worked together really well. Maan had become a shrewd businessman, and had climbed the corporate ladder really fast, under the guidance of his mentor, Savitri Devi and had soon become THE Maan Singh Khurrana.

No longer was he an illegitimate child who people used to ridicule and taunt, he had risen much above to a place where people revered and respected him. He had the world at his fingertip. KC also gained a lot of hype under his helm and he had become the MD. All had been going perfect in his life, until the bomb had dropped.

And then his life had been blown away.

Life had thrown him in a spin, when he came to know that the office, in which he worked, where he had made his mark, Khurana constructions, in actual fact belonged to his father!

His father and his wife had been long dead by then, and Savitri Devi, the only surviving member of the Khurana clan had been running it.

But when the truth of his so called relationship with Savitri Devi had come out, it had blown away all the respect that she had gained in his eyes. She became the woman because of whom his mother had led such a harsh life.

Savitri Devi had offered him his rightful place in her family, but he thought that was only because she had no one else to carry forward the Khurana clan, not for any love for her grandson. Her son had not had any other child from his business merger of a marriage. So he was all that Savitri Devi could have.

Maan had left KC and all its associated perks without a second thought. He wanted nothing to do with the people who had ruined his mother. He had been angry on Darji as well, but Darji tried explaining to him that he only wanted Maan to have what was his birthright. But Maan vowed that he would never claim it. What should have been his mother's had been snatched away from her in the name of society, and now he was being made a puppet to those rules.

The Khuranas' could all rot in hell as far as he was concerned

His family had supported his decision, full on. Naintara, Dev and Arjun had all been working with him in KC at that time while Annie had still been studying. But they never hesitated when Maan told them about his decision. He didn't want them to suffer because of him, but they had stood firm by his side, leaving behind everything that they had achieved.

He had never met SD after that day, no matter how much she pleaded. A few months later, he had got the news that SD had passed away and her lawyer came to him with her will. Maan had sent the lawyer packing as he had already decided that he would never accept KC. But fate had planned something else.

He had had to bend down, not for himself, but for his loved ones.

Hoo abhi mujh mein kahin

The millions he had rejected for his mother were once again his. But he didn't feel like a rich man. In fact he was the poorest man to ever walk the face of the earth. He had lost a lot in life, and he didn't have the courage to lose more.

Hoo' dhoop mein jalte hue tann koo

Chhaya pedh ki mil gayi

It was while working at KC that he had met Sameera. She had been all that he could want in a woman. Beautiful, intelligent and caring. He had fallen head over heels in love with her. She had been like him, a self made woman and so she hadn't cared about his past, supposedly. With her he had learned to enjoy the life he had long left behind. She made him come out of his shell, to enjoy each moment.

Roothe bacche ki hansi jaise

Phuslane se phir khil gayi

Kuch aisa hi ab mehsoos dil ko ho raha hai

Barson ke puraane zakhmon pe marham laga sa hai

She made him laugh with her, at himself at the world. He liked her confidence in herself, mocking the world for all its faults, being a carefree bird, taking happiness along the way, not bothering to look behind once to see what was left behind.

He had climbed the ladder of success with her along his side.

Kuch ehsaan hai,

Iss lamhe mein hai

Ye lamha kahaan tha meraa

Ab hai saamne.. isse chhoo loon zara

Marr jaaun ya jee loo zara

He had tried to live with Sameera to the fullest. Enjoy each day as it came. But once again, he met with disappointment. The love he thought was strong enough to carry them through all hurdles of life had crumbled at the first obstacle.

"Maan you have to choose, your ego or me!"

"Sameera why don't you understand, it's not my ego! It's my self-respect. How can you expect me to forget all these years of my mother's suffering and accept all this!'

"Maan! You aren't getting the point, forget the past, and think about the future!"

"Sameera, you know I love you, but what you are asking me is impossible."

"Why Maan? Why is not possible? Think Maan think! Think about the life we can have. Why don't you see what I can Maan? This is what we always wanted in life, isn't it? Money, status, recognition, power, so that no one ever again treats us like dirt? Then how can you turn your back on all of this? Especially now, when we are about to go a step ahead in our relationship! I have always respected your decisions Maan but not this! I can't let you make this mistake. It's about our future...My future! This time you have to choose, it's either us, or your so called self respect! "

"Sameera, please try to understand, we can always get all this again, if I have you by my side."

"Who knows what lies in tomorrow? What if we couldn't? No Maan! I have told you my decision, now you have to choose! It's now or never!"

The ultimatum had changed his life forever.

He once again failed against life, being unable to save his future.

He came back to the present, out of the bitter memories; stopping before he could remember further to the biggest betrayal he could ever have received from the woman who claimed to love him! It hadn't all been her fault. He had failed too. Failed in a way from which he could never recover or forgive himself. Tears flowed down his face, unchecked, as he thought about that painful time.

Dor se tooti patang jaisi

Thi yeh zindagaani meri

His life had been just moving since then. He had neither the will to live nor the courage to die. He was eating, breathing drinking, but he was dead from inside.

But life had once again thrown a new beginning at him. However he was afraid to take it, knowing that he wouldn't survive this time if Geet too left him.

The thought of Geet brought about restlessness in his heart; he badly wanted to see her. He knew this heaviness of his heart would reduce only in her presence. It was her embrace that could soothe his agitation, that could make him forget.

In a short time, she had become much more to him than he could imagine.

She had become his want, his need!

Aaj hoon kal ho mera naho

Har din thi kahaani meri

He came back home, quietly not wanting to disturb her if she was sleeping.

He looked at her lying on the bed, dried tear lining her soft cheeks, making his heart bleed some more. He hated himself for what he was putting her through, but he felt helpless in the clutches of his fate.

He bent over her, taking his hand towards her cheek to wipe off the stains, but his hand shook. Did he have the right to taint her with his shady life? Sameera's words about his past haunting him. Would Geet accept him for what he was, without expecting him to change himself?

Ek bandhan naya peeche seh ab mujhko bulaye

Aane wale kal ki kyun fhikar mujhko kyun sataa jaaye

A drop of water fell on her cheek, unbeknown to him. The tears he had not shed since a long time were now being shed. Geet awoke with the feel of something wet on her cheek, and looked up to see Maan.

His eyes were red with crying, his skin blotchy and his shoulders drooped in defeat. This was not the Maan Singh Khurrana she knew. She had never seen her Maan like this. She realized it must be the aftereffects of her conversation with Dev. "Kya hua Maan?"

He just looked at her, silent tears falling continuously, the pain ebbing out in waves. Geet immediately got up and wiped his tears, shaking her head as if telling him not to cry, while her own started pouring out. She caressed him all over the face, trying to soothe his unrest.

"Maan please kuch to boliye na! I promise, I will never ask you anything about your past. Jis cheez se aapko itni takleef hoti hai, mujhe wo nahi jaanna! Aap bas shaant ho jayiye!"

Ik aisi chubhan, iss lamhe mein hai

Yeh lamha kahaan tha mera

Maan just grabbed her and hugged her hard, burying his face in her neck and weeping like a child.

He cried and cried like there was no tomorrow. Geet tried her best to soothe him, rubbing his back and massaging his head continuously, letting him cry out all his pains.

Ab hai saamne.. isse chhoo loon zara

Marr jaaun ya jee loon zara

Maan kept hugging her hard, not wanting her to leave him. He wanted to live again.

With her. With Geet.

He wanted to believe in her words. Her promises. He wanted the haven of her arms to always shield him from his bitter past.

They stayed like that for a long time, finding solace in each other's arms. Geet kept soothing him while Maan was crying, removing his pain, cleansing himself.

Khushiyaan choom loon

Ya roh loon zara

Mar jaaun ya jee loon zara

Next day morning when Maan got up, he found himself sleeping with his head on Geet's lap, while she slept in an awkward sitting position, keeping her back against the headrest. Her hand was still in his hair and he felt a certain peace in his soul. His heart felt lighter than it had been in a long time.

He got up slowly, a smile on his face, kissing the 'happiness' of his life lightly on her forehead, and made her sleep properly, tucking her inside. He got up to leave, but unable to help himself, he came back to drop one last kiss on her forehead, his lips lingering there for some time, making a tentative decision to try to embrace life once more.
