1920 - Evil Returns
By Joginder Tuteja, 12 Oct 2012, 11:23 hrs IST
EXPECTATIONS

One expects some lilting melodies in the soundtrack of 1920 - Evil Returns. Even though the film's prequel, 1920, didn't really have much to cheer about other than 'Vaada Tumse Hain Vaada', the track record of Vikram Bhatt's films has been super-strong when it comes to the music. Yes, 1920 - Evil Returns is directed by debutant Bhushan Patel but with Vikram as the producer, you expect his stamp in the musical journey that this horror thriller takes. With Chirantan Bhatt as the composer (whose songs from Haunted indeed haunt till date), one indeed looks forward to what the team has to offer.

MUSIC

As expected, 1920 - Evil Returns embarks on a fantastic start with 'Apnaa Mujhe Tu Lagaa', a love song that has Sonu Nigam at his best. Deservingly, he also features in the music video of the song which is not just highly melodious but also immensely catchy. The song manages to hook you on in the very beginning while its smooth flow only makes you play it on for that pleasant evening with the loved one. At times songs like these work well mainly at the 'mukhda' but the good part of this well written number by Shakeel Azmi is that it turns out to be even better during the 'antara' portions. An excellent number.

'Uska Hi Banana' makes it two in a row as this pathos dipped number has a story to tell as well, what with Junaid Wasi getting it perfectly right with his words. A song about cry to the God where the protagonist wants to be not just on his beloved's side but also take away all her sorrows, this one reminds one of the kind of setting that Haunted too had enjoyed. Add to that the soul stirring vocals of Arijit Singh ('Phir Le Aaya Dil', 'Saawali Si Raat' from Barfi!) and you know that this one has in it to enjoy a good outing not just in the film's narrative but way beyond in the collection of those who like their music to seep in.

A hat-trick of quintessential Bhatt music is scored with 'Jaavedaan Hai' which could have just fitted into a Bhatt-Hashmi-Pritam territory and grabbed with both hands! Add to that the vocals of K.K. and you pretty much know the kind of space that this love song is enjoying. While the start is fantastic, the song reaches its crescendo by the time title 'Jaavedaan Hai' comes to the fore. Though Suzanne Dmello is heard primarily in the background, she makes her presence felt in this Shakeel Azmi written track which doesn't just justify its presence in the film's context but also has in it to enjoy a long run.

By the time Mahalakshmi Iyer's vocals are heard in Shakeel Azmi written 'Khud Ko Tere', you know that Vikram Bhatt indeed had a hand to play in ensuring that his director Bhushan Patel gets some quality soundtrack from Chirantan Bhatt and his team of lyricists. Though this one isn't the kind that promises a chartbuster in the making, it fits in well into the template of this soundtrack while carrying an out and out Indian feel to it. Also, for those missing Nadeem-Sharavan compositions, this one does come close.

The album concludes with yet another pathos soaked number, 'Majboor Tu Bhi Kahin'. While the start of this Manoj Yadav written number is intriguing enough, rest assured the chorus accompanied by some haunting musical arrangements would make an appearance at various junctures in the film. New entrant Amit Mishra has the kind of unique vocals that are generally experimented by Pritam and it is good to see Chirantan Bhatt trying out some untried singers in the album. The final composition turns out to be a good situational number that gives 1920 - Evil Returns a fitting conclusion.

OVERALL

1920 - Evil Returns delivers more than expectations and while 'Apnaa Mujhe Tu Lagaa' is a chartbuster in the making, 'Jaavedaan Hai' and 'Uska Hi Banana' have it in them to enjoy a long haul as well, just as has been the case with the music of Haunted which is still in circulation. The music also turns out to be much better than 1920 and with three more weeks to go for the film's release, it has ample time to register it's presence with some aggressive promotion.

1920 – Evil Returns Music Review

1920 – Evil Returns is a forthcoming horror film (a genre that is rarely present in Bollywood) and is a sequel to the film 1920 (2008). It stars Aftab Shivdasani, Tia Bajpai and Vidya Malvade in the leading roles and is all set for release on 2 November 2012. According to the synopsis, the film is based on a poet called Jaidev (Aftab) who meets a young woman called Smruti (Tia) by a lake. He forms a relationship with her and later discovers that Smruti has lost her memory (the only things she remembers is his poems). Whilst they are staying at a guesthouse (they are en route to a hospital so Smruti can get treatment), Smruti becomes possessed by a spirit that is present in the guesthouse. You will have to wait until this spooky movie releases to find out what happens!

The music director for the film's soundtrack is Chirantan Bhatt. He has composed songs for films like Mission Istaanbul (2008) and most recently forHaunted – 3D (2011). The lyrics have been penned by Shakeel Azmi, who has written songs for films like Zeher (2005) and for Haunted – 3D also. So let's explore what 1920 – Evil Returns has to offer to us Bollywood addicts!

We start off with Apnaa Mujhe Tu Lagaa, which is performed by the charismatic Sonu Niigaam. It is a power ballad and you can hear a selection of instruments such as the guitar and the piano as part of the composition. Sonu's vocals are perfect and he gives it his absolute all in this song. The music has been finely composed and as a result, it is difficult for me to find any specific problems with it. Hence, this song is most certainly worth listening and Sonu's harmonious voice makes it all the more special!

Next up we have Uska Hi Banana, sung by the young Arijit Singh. It is a dark song and understandably so, since it complements the theme of the film. Arijit sings the song with power and raw emotion! The music also suits Arijit's voice very much. Though it is not an 'outstanding' song, it has been well-composed and surely deserves a listen!

Jaavedaan Hai follows and this has been performed the talented K.K, with Suzanne D'Mello providing mild backing vocals. Instruments such as the drums, the piano and bagpipes can be heard in this catchy number. The song has been sung smoothly by K.K and the music itself is also flavoursome. Definitely not a song which I would skip so give it a try and you may end up liking it.

The album also has Khud Ko Tere, sung by the lovely Mahalakshmi Iyer. This is a beautiful song and it has been performed by Mahalakshmi with passion and emotion. I very much enjoyed listening to her voice in this song and it reaffirmed for me that she is a truly gifted singer who is full of talent. I also love the music and it has been thoughtfully composed. It has a 'desi' feeling to it with the use of Indian instruments like the tabla. Yet Western instruments are not absent and this is apparent with the use of the violin. A song which I strongly recommend you hear!

Finally we have Majboor Tu Bhi Kahin, which is performed by Amit Mishra. This is probably the weakest song in the album and I just did not find it that alluring to listen to. Although Amit sings well in this song, I did not find the music to be of the same standard compared to the other tracks in the album. Therefore, I would classify it as a song which could have been much better.

To sum up, I must say that I am actually quite impressed with the soundtrack to 1920 – Evil Returns. I did not expect it to be so good and as a result, I recommend that you give this album a chance since there are some catchy tunes that will certainly impress you. What makes it even sweeter is that there are no remixes, which arguably would have affected the quality of the album as a whole. Chitrantan Bhatt is indeed a talented music director who has clearly worked hard here to create an album of a very good standard. A soundtrack which deserves your ear's attention!

Apnaa mujhe tu lagaa is by-the-template ballad sung soulfully by Sonu Nigam – nothing new that we haven't heard, but mildly impactful too. Chirantan scores better in the very Pritam'ish Uska hi banana, where Arijit Singh is the star, while Jaavedaan hai goes much deeper into Pritam territory – partly because of the harmonious chorus and maily because of KK's vocals; pleasant tune, but way too templatized. Khud ko tere brings back the Nadeem Shravan school of music, but in Mahalaxmi Iyer's vocals – doesn't work. Majboor tu bhi kahin sinks further – a wailing drone! Blah Bhatt music template.

Chirantan Bhatt's 1920 Evil Returns is succulent & delightful

(Sumit wrote on Oct 17 2012 2:41AM)

It's undoubted, Vikram Bhatt's 1920(2008) was a big hit and Adnan Sami composed some hit melodious tracks for the film like 'Vaada Tumse Hai Vaada'. '1920 Evil Returns' is thse sequel of Vikram Bhatt's 1920 and this time music is composed by Chirantan Bhatt who also composed music for Vikram Bhatt's Haunted 3D, So the expectations are rightly sky high. The album is full of fresh melodies and delighful tracks, It is Chirantan Bhatt's another succulent album. Hit!

1. Album starts with a very beautiful song with supple and docile romantic feel "Apnaa Mujhe Tu Lagaa" perfectly rendered by the king of cord Sonu Nigam. Entrancing sound of piano begins the song and Sonu Nigam's engaging vocals proudly leads the song with soft stringed guitar strumming. Chirantan Bhatt superbly arranged the synchronization of high and low notes with efficacious lyrics penned by Shakeel Azmi. Very nice start for the album, also the video is more attractive features Sonu Nigam expressively. A very catchy melody with pertinent use of guitar, strings, piano and drum. Very Nice!

2. We can feel Chirantan Bhatt's pleasing touch in next track "Uska Hi Banana" sung by Arijit Singh, a very passionate and smashing track which easily get your attention and successfully delivers the sentiment. Very soulful lyrics and well-turned musical arrangements. Arijit's well-balanced voice finely suits on melody and he has done a terrific job. Song nicely tells the emotions and situations of Jaidev Verma(Aftab Shivdasani) and his feelings towards Smruti(Tia Bajpai). Must Listen!

3. After Tum Ho Mera Pyaar(Haunted) Chirantan Bhatt brings back K.K. with a very delightful track "Jaavedaan Hai" sung by K.K. & Suzanne D'mello. Song starts with melodious sound of flute mixed with acoustic guitar, and beautiful opera touch. Very soft and sweet composition with pleasing lyrics, soft drum kicks and enthralling orchestrations. K.K. spectacularly leads the song and sung sweetly, Suzanne D'mello tunably rendered her part. Recommended!

4. Here we have another surprise, after a very long time Mahalakshmi Iyer is back with next track "Khud Ko Tere" sung by Mahalakshmi Iyer. it's another melodious track in the album with lucrative and volition feel. A traditional bollywood melody and savory lyrics. Song begins with sonorous sound of violin, bland sound of dholak and peaceful beats makes song more stunning. Another best part is Mahalakshmi Iyer's mesmerizing vocal and she sung with perfection. An ear soothing track!

5. "Majboor Tu Bhi Kahin" sung by Amit Mishra, It's a sad song with so much variations in beats, Chirantan Bhatt perfectly used acoustic guitar and strings to give desired pace to the song and beautifully maintained the synchronization in each section especially in 'antaraa'. And the credit goes to Amit Mishra's mesmerizing vocal and his promising performance, he teetotally sung all the variations, very nice experiment by Chirantan. Nice!

1920 – Evil Returns Music Review

Producer Vikram Bhatt is back with 1920 – Evil Returns, a quasi-sequel to his earlier flick 1920. It is expected that music from the Bhatt camp has to be passionate and emotional. Their trademark style is embellished in all their movies and this one is no different, more so with the film belonging to the horror thriller genre. The makers have chosen Chirantan Bhatt, music director of Haunted, to do the needful and just like some fabulous music that he had composed there; he repeats the act this time around as well.

Aftab Shivdasani and Tia Bajpai in a still from 1920 - Evil Returns Movie

1920 – Evil Returns Music Review: Apnaa Mujhe Tu Lagaa

Album begins with Sonu Nigam's ever-stylish melodious voice as he renders Apnaa Mujhe Tu Lagaa. It's a solo track that begins on a high note and instantly makes you like it. Even the middle portions have good poetry by Shakeel Azmi which keeps the listener glued. This song sets the tone for the album and initiates Bhatt style of music to flow.

1920 – Evil Returns Music Review: Uska Hi Banana

Arijit Singh is riding high after the success of Sanwali Si Raat [Barfi!] and delivers another treat in the form ofUska Hi Banana in this album. His bottomless voice with the music creates wonders in the track. Music here is very passionate and conveys emotions ardently in the track. Junaid Wasi has lent attractive lyrics which suits the song's mood. This is one of those compositions which would stay on with you even after the album is over as it has it in it to make you hear it again and again on those lonely moments.

1920 – Evil Returns Music Review: Jaavedaan Hai

After Arijit Singh it is KK who makes a high note entry in the album through Jaavedaan Hai. This makes it a hat trick for the lovelorn passionate solo tracks in the album. Each one of it has its own depth and is adorned with great voice. Sussane Demello is vocally visible with her voice and helps in accentuating the effect of the song. Shakeel Azmi's lyrics are apt which manage to settle with the music and atmosphere of the album.

1920 – Evil Returns Music Review: Khud Ko Tere

By this time one realizes that this is a male dominated album though Mahalaskshmi Iyer does come to fore with Khud Ko Tere which arrives next. This song changes the tempo and mood of the album. Till now, each of the other tracks had modern/urban instruments and rhythm; however this one takes you back to the time of 90s and early 2000. This one has a very Nadeem-Shravan style to it and lyrics by Shakeel Azmi make you believe so as well. Only those who still follow that style of music from the era gone by would be okay to find this one in the middle of an album that otherwise carried a very today's style.

1920 – Evil Returns Music Review: Majboor Tu Bhi Kahin

Amit Mishra concludes the album with Majboor Tu Bhi Kahin with which a listener is back in the earlier space that had been created by Chirantan. The track has very minimalist background soft music and grows while also bringing Amit's voice in the forefront. Manoj Yadav's lyrics are dripping in sorrow and Amit's vocals do justice to that.

1920 – Evil Returns Music review: The Last Word

Overall, there are five tracks in the album and out of that four depict and portray a similar kind of emotion in different voices. Though all of them have their own highs, for those looking for variety the soundtrack may become a little heavy due to similar space and setting. Musically though, Chirantan Bhatt has given some really good tracks and now one looks forward to what the composer has to offer in films which require much more varied emotions through its songs.

Very much like the Bhatts, filmmaker Vikram Bhatt too is a name unto himself, and his brand of horror flicks have a huge fan following, and quite like them the music too does very well and enjoys great patronag e from music buffs.

Coming to the film at hand, 1920 - EVIL RETURNS, it is a quasi sequel to the classy horror flick 1920, which was directed by Vikram and was appreciated for its special effects, story and music. Though this time the director at the helm of affairs, Bhushan Patel, is a debutant and Vikram has not only produced the film but he has also written the story. The music department is in the deft handling of Chirantan Bhatt, who is now one of Vikram's favourite after the super hitHAUNTED 3D. The songs of the film are still popular and we do expect another great album from him.

Lead actress Tia Bajpai too confirms the above saying, "The music of 1920 EVIL RETURNS is really good, and I like the whole album." So let us check out the audio!

CHECK OUT: Vikram Bhatt turns lyricist for 1920 - EVIL RETURNS

The very first song, 'Apna Mujhe Tu Laga', proves beyond doubt that our expectations were not unfounded and that Tia too was right on dot when she had said that this was one of her favourite numbers. Sung by the king of romantic numbers, Sonu Nigam (who also features in the promotional music video of the song), the track has all it takes to be a chart topper and a valentine day special number which would indeed be loved by those who savour hard core romantic tracks . The commencement with a mix of eclectic piano drills and guitar strums and just Sonu's full on emotions rendition point towards a brilliant composition. Superb melody that is so very rich and striking, excellent singing by Sonu, his best for quite a while, since his return, one must add, and some lovely musical arrangements that are top class. To top it all, lyrics by Shakeel Azmi too are good, they may appear to be routine but they gel well with the situation in the film as even though the lead actors are strangers but they have a strange bond connecting them.

The Valentine day special mood continues with 'Hi Banana', another outstanding track rendered to perfection by Arijit Singh, the new musical sensation to hit Bollywood music scenario with songs from BARFI! An intense, emotional and passionate love ballad sung throughout at such a high pitch that even KK would have been proud.

Chirantan deserves kudos for composing a song that not only carries the high on emotion content of the film but it also appeals in a big way as it never wavers or falters at any stage and in the end when it culminates into a rockish ballad, it's just amazing! Hats off to lyricist Junaid Warsi too, for his excellent lyrics that convey the heartfelt emotions in manner that it's almost like a prayer/ cry to the almighty- 'Meri kismet ki har ek panne pe, Mere jeete ji, Baad marne ke, Mere har ek kal, Har ek lamhe mein, Tu likh de mera usey..Aye Khuda, Aye khuda, Jab bana uska hi bana'. Simply brilliant!

view 1920 - EVIL RETURNS videos

Next up is 'Jaavedaan Hai', a light, breezy love ditty that carries the oriental essence at it's fore, especially in the haunting signature tune which is repeated throughout, and is one of the highlights of the track. KK has been given the responsibility to render the number that is inspired from the house of Bhatts, as it carries their trademark stamp in a big way and has shades of Emraan-Pritam's TUM MILE, and so it has that heard before feel and therefore does not have the same impact as the first two numbers. Suzzane DeMello joins in briefly with her back up choral and provides the necessary oomph. Shakeel Azmi's lyrics are light on the ears and easy to hum.

Soft piano caresses and soul stirring flute notes commence 'Khud Ko Tere' , a superb, situational melodious number about two lost souls meeting and sharing their sorrows and problems, conveyed in a perfect manner through just the right words by lyricist Shakeel Azmi . Hugely talented Mahalaxmi Aiyer (who is scarcely heard these days) is a delight as her singing does remind one of Alka of yore and brings back the memories of her evergreen Nadeem-Shravan songs.

CHECK OUT: 1920 - EVIL RETURNS promo makes instant impression

The album gets a fitting finale with, 'Majboor Tu Bhi', a mindblowing rock based love ballad, that ranks up right there with Pritam's rock numbers from LIFE IN A... METRO .The superb orchestration and arrangements (drums, guitars and other percussions) that set up the song is commendable and show Chirantan's prowess here. Sung by the newest rockstar on the block, Amit Mishra, in his uniquely gruff, hoarse but highly laudable vocals that are tailor made for such rock based numbers. But the highlight of the track are indeed the superb lyrics by Manoj Yadav that question the almightily for all the things that have gone wrong, a cry of grief by a disbeliever is something that would translate well on screen and would fit into the narratives with ease.

Summing up, Chirantan and his team continue from where they left off in HAUNTED, and one is sure that producer Vikram Bhatt, who has a good ear for music, has taken time off and put his inputs here as well. Kudos to the entire team for some melodious numbers that would indeed find favour with the music patrons, and they are our favourites as well 'Uska Hi Banana', 'Apna Muhje Tu Laga' and 'Majboor Tu Bhi'. On the hind side, there is not much variety that is offered here and that mandatory situational, scary number is missing that would have provided the album with the required chill factor. But still the popularity of the album would indeed translate into good box-office returns when the film releases all over on 2nd November 2012.
