He went downhill over the years... He tried to copy Aamir and limited his movies. But unlike Aamir, HR has a terrible script sense and not versatile enough...

He was touted as the next big thing to topple the Khans... Forget toppling the Khans, HR could not sustain himself... Lacks the versatilty of Ajay Devgun and Ranbir Kapoor... HR is good in the larger than life roles... But in the rest of the genres like romcom and serious stuff, he looks very uncomfortable...

Nkapoor - Back when KNPH released there were articles released that the Khans are threatened by Hrithik. Of course we don't know if it was really the case. It could be speculation, but that is the impact he had back then. So far in the history of Bollywood if you look at every actor's debut (from what I have read) there is no one that had the debut Hrithik had. I could be wrong though and someone could have broken his first film's box office record. I remember watching this one show in which SRK joked about Hrithik's box office debut - he meant it in a good way.

The position that Ranbir Kapoor has created today with his films and his roles especially after Barfi - we all know that Ranbir is a serious threat to the Khan's. This could have been Hrithik's potential. You may chose to agree or disagree with me on that statement. We aren't talking about his current position, but he could have been a bigger star than he is today. The sky is the limit.

But after his debut HR picked the wrong films. He did 'aap mujhe ache lagne lage', 'mujse dosti karoge' and a few others. He mentioned in one of the interviews that was a bad period for him since one magazine declared he was 'finished'. During that bad patch he became picky his roles, but unlike Aamir (like Maddy stated) he didn't have the right script sense nor the versatility.

Everyone has a niche in Bollywood. Srk is the king of romance. Saif is brilliant with comedy. Aamir is the king of versatility. Hrithik's niche is larger than life roles, except HR doesn't go for them.
