In what could be their first brush with stardom, Karan Johar's three Student Of The Year discoveries were stopped by the Mumbai customs on their return from London in the afternoon on October 5.
Reports of celebrities running into trouble with the customs are frequent. Recent examples include Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu and Anushka Sharma. The three youngsters, Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt were in Dubai and London for film promotions. Sources say that when they got off the plane, they were dressed like stars and sported sunglasses and were travelling with heavy bags.
An eye-witness account says that when their bags were opened, Sidharth explained to the officer how he was just a budding newcomer and his economic status hardly allowed him to splurge on anything new. "Sir, most of the clothes in my bag are old," the youngster from New Delhi said.
The officers realised he was speaking the truth and Sid was cleared. Varun Dhawan, went one step ahead and showed the officers how the clothes in his bag were costumes he had worn in the film. He showed the officers movie stills in his phone and explained how they were indeed continuity clothes. He too sailed through. Nattily dressed Alia, of course, did have some new purchases from Dubai and UK in her baggage. She reportedly paid 5,000 as duty.
Karan, who arrived before his actors wasn't stopped. In fact, he became aware that his actors had run into custom trouble only after he left the airport. We tried to reach Karan for comment. He didn't respond.
