My Box Office predictions for English Vinglish

Okay, now time for the predictions! Sridevi dominated the Hindi film industry (amongst heroines) for many, many years. She starred in many super-successful films like HIMMATWALA, KARMA, NAGINA, MR.INDIA, and of course, perhaps her biggest, Yash Chopra's CHANDNI, the film that defines Sridevi. Sridevi's last film was a delayed film that came in 2004 called MERI BIWI KA JAWAB NAHIN, which also starred Akshay Kumar. After that, Sridevi has had no film in 8 long years!

This Friday marks the legendary actress's return to the screen, with ENGLISH VINGLISH.

To be honest, when the first promos/theatrical trailer came of ENGLISH VINGLISH, the film felt dry, especially the theatrical promo where Sridevi was trying to read english on the censor film certificate. However, what counts though is the appreciation for a film, and in this case, the pre-release reports of those who have seen ENGLISH VINGLISH are excellent. More on that later!

Talking about the business prospects of the film, one can see that ENGLISH VINGLISH is more of a class-appealing, multiplex film. Another thing to see is that due to the fact that there is no male superstar in the film (Sridevi is the only well-known star in the film), the opening will be more on the lower side. Singles screens and mass-dominated centers will remain poor both in the opening and throughout the lifetime business of the film, because this is not a film for the masses. However, a major point for the film is this: those have already seen the film have given the film tremendous appreciation. To cite one example, at the Toronto film festival, the film got a standing ovation! Others too who have seen the film (Amitabh Bacchan, Taran Adarsh) have also expressed their appreciation for the film. So, it is quite likely that the film will earn tremendous appreciation from the classes/multiplex audience, which will help the film become a success, and perhaps another KAHAANI of 2012 in terms of success!

Opening Weekend: 16 crores net

Lifetime Collections: 45 crore net

Overall Box Office Verdict: Hit

So, ENGLISH VINGLISH will likely bring Sridevi back into the limelight, with a bang!
