The expectations from 'Barfi!' were quite high, because of its leading star cast, the maker Anurag Basu, and of course the attention-grabbing storyline. However the film had indeed matched up to its expectations and given out one of the best movie of the year. To narrate a and describe a story which has deaf-mute and autism characters, is itself a courageous and tough thing, and the maker Anurag Basu had successfully portrayed both the characters in a splendid and innovative way. A special mention here that the film is not been focused on disability, but it will take you in an altogether different world with disability as a backdrop.
The story travels from 1972 to 1978 and finally to the present day in the city of love, Darjeeling. It tells you about a jolly-good young man Murphy (Ranbir Kapoor), who often calls as Barfi by his closed ones. Right from his childhood, he is deaf and mute, but never complains and always makes other smile by his usual pranks. He is a charmer and beloved personality, especially among girls. One fine day he met a young and beautiful girl Shruti (Ileana D'Cruz), who is happily engaged with another man. Barfi and Shruti became friends and soon fallen in love with each other. However destiny had some other plans for the two. Post interval the story takes a turning point where Barfi meets his childhood friend Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra), who is suffering from Autistic disease since childhood. The movie then revolves around in an emotionally heart-wrenching and unusual love story between Barfi, Shruti and Jhilmil, that tells you about an unconditional love, friendship and happiness.
