Wearing a short green dress and a sexy smile, long legs flashing in high heels, her auburn hair let loose to cascade wildly down her shoulders, she oozed oomph and confidence. Oomph, Bipasha's always had; the confidence undoubtedly comes from the fact that her performance in Raaz 3 has been widely appreciated by critics and fans and the film, with serial kisser and co-star Emraan Hashmi's help of course, made 36.5 crore in its opening weekend.
Bipasha is on the Moon, naturally. "Every review, every person coming out of a theatre has loved me in the film," she said excitedly. "This is my life's most humbling moment. To be loved for such a dark and, well, evil role… what can I say, let me enjoy the moment. I don't know when it will come again."
And it is true, in a career of 11 years that started with a negative role as well in 2001's Ajnabee, and in which Bipasha has seen a lot of pain and a lot of people coming and going in her life – but not seen much critical acclaim, the praise she is getting for Raaz 3 is making her beam. Simply she said, "To reach this I had to go through all that." People are saying it was very brave of her, and credible, to accept this negative role that Mahesh Bhatt is reported to have said would cause Bipasha's career "to soar like an eagle or sink like a rock".
But talk to her about being brave in the face of the supernatural, and the actress recoils in mock horror: "I am a fattu… I've been this way since I was a kid, I can't sleep alone, I'm scared of the dark. And as for black magic, all that we did in the film is all that I know! We used it as a tool to scare people. Indians may not know of the vampires and voodoo shown by Hollywood, but I am told the film did exceptionally well in places like Bengal because people there are aware of black magic."
Time was when she did 13 films a year and became fat and unhealthy, fell sick and had no life; today, in fact for the last seven years, Bipasha has made it a rule to only work on three films in a year. "For me, to have a life is as imprtant as to have work, my priorities have changed," she admitted. What about her take on relationships and love? "That also has changed," Bipasha said. "Who doesn't want to be in love? But it's a fiercely personal thing. It is a sad situation here. When you hide your relationship, people have opinions about you; when you're truthful, people look for dirt! But gossip about link-ups don't bother me at this stage. Loose talk doesn't affect me and prevent me from living the life I want to lead. The industry accepting me the way I am is very important. I may look bohemian, but I've very traditional in my thoughts and responsible in my actions. I know I am famous and people will be curious about my life because I am single. But I accept that because I also know that one day this will all come to an end… that's life, what has to go has to go, but it scares me no end!"
Talk about Bollywood led to comparisons between Vidya Balan and her which Bipasha found disagreeable. "There is no need to compare me to anybody," the actress said. "I have not survived ten years in the industry, I have not been quirky, rather ballsy in my decisions right from my first film, to be compared to anybody. Actors (meaning Vidya and herself) here have the urge to do something more and different. We are always hunting for roles like this. It's a tough life for an actor to choose where and how to be. It's very important that the audience accepts that we actors are creative people who only want to entertain. And I am comfortable in any role that gives me the edge to perform. I want to do films that fetch revenue and get me eyeballs. In 2002's Raaz I was just a kid. In Raaz 3, I am a fine actor. And who said that being glamorous and sexy means that you cannot act?"
And least people get the impression that Bipasha Basu believes the success of the film is entirely because of her, the actress paid a handsome compliment to her co-star: "Emraan is an actor who understands a character graph. He doesn't try to be heroic. He always takes a step back. His performance is effortless, fabulous, he is a fine actor. So what if he has got the tag of Serial Kisser? Is there anybody else in Bollywood, or even Hollywood, who can make the same claim? I told Emraan, 'Even if you don't want to, I am going to make sure you enter the Guinness Book of World Records for this'!"
