Mumtaz and Hema Malini have Shahid Amir for company
Although it was an event strictly meant for showcasing a jewellery line, Bolly designers Shahid Amir and Vikram Phadnis came with their respective muses to walk the runway.

And there you see yesteryear actresses Hema Malini and Mumtaz sashaying down with elan.

Giving them company were Amisha Patel, Dia Mirza, Kunal Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Gul Panag and Suman Ranganathan, as they sported some exquisite custom-made jewellery.

Among the jewellery connoisseurs, we spotted the illustrious Feroz Khan walking in with daughter Laila Rajpal, enquiring about the possibility of on-the-spot sales.

Women on top

Koena Mitra

Bipasha Basu

Call it the celebration of the spirit of women or just another awards ceremony, but the Zee Astitva Awards saw Bong belles Bipasha Basu and Koena Mitra taking centrestage. Instead of screaming aloud about their respective achievements, the belles let their moves do the talking. Take a look…

Tongue-tied? Hell no!

Shah Rukh Khan
He may be called a lot of things — arrogant, self-absorbed, vain — but if there's one thing you can't call Shah Rukh Khan, it's boring. In a recent TV interview, SRK was asked about his much publicised rivalry with the Big B.

With tongue-firmly-in-cheek, SRK replied, "We hate each other and right now we are planning through assassins to kill each other. My assassins are outside Mr Bachchan's house, attempting to take over his house and his films."

But no, there's more. SRK then quips about how he feels about the rumours, "I was never irritated, I was never disturbed. Now, I'm not even amused. I mean it's an old and boring story. I think newspapers and channels should just freshen up with some scandalous stories — like me having an affair with Abhishek Bachchan would be more interesting."

Erm, is SRK just being cocky or should we read between the lines here?

Lady in white

Ishaa Koppikar
It's was a shravan food fest at Goa Portuguesa and Ishaa Koppikar came in to taste the fare.

She arrived sporting a strappy white top and capris, which was perfect — what with white being the colour of the season.

But then she went overboard matching it with a milky white bracelet, a watch with an oversized dial and even white shoes!

A gal wearing everything matching is so '80s. Next time, remember to add some contrast to your robes.

Also, consider a clutch or a handbag, then you won't have to carry your spectacles and mobile phone awkwardly. Just a few tips from us to you.

RAZA'S BOLLYWOOD

Q
What would Mika do on Raksha Bandhan Day?

Black Friday's Tiger misses Hollywood bus

Lost chance: Pawan Malhotra

Pavan Malhotra, who played Tiger Memon in Black Friday, was the first choice for the male lead of the mainstream British film Seven Seas.

The film is a screen adaptation of the best-selling novel, Brick Lane, written by Bangladeshi origin author Monica Ali. Satish Kaushik will now essay that role.

Immigrants' story

Ali's book, which focuses on an Asian family living in Britain and explores the British immigrant experience, was short-listed for the 2003 Booker Prize. The film, directed by Sarah Gavron, is being produced by Oscar and Golden Globe nominee Alison Owen, who has produced films such as Moonlight and Valentino, Elizabeth, Sylvia and Proof, among others.

Date problems

Malhotra missed his chance to make his Hollywood debut, because he was shooting for Farhan Akhtar's remake of Don, where he plays Narang (played by Kamal Kapoor in Chandra Barot's original version). Malhotra says, "Satishji was destined to do that role, I guess. I could not adjust my dates because I was shooting for Don."

According to Malhotra, the director was willing to wait, but one of the producers said that he would lose a lot of money. Malhotra was shooting in Malaysia when he got the call that they were going ahead with Kaushik.

"They wanted to start on May 15. I told them that I would be busy with Don during that period, and they had agreed to postpone it. Later, they had second thoughts. But they did try their best to retain me. The production team even sent letters to Farhan requesting him to allow me to do that role. Farhan said he could not, and justifiably so."

Complex role

Malhotra says that it was a very interesting role of a complex character. "They needed a fat guy and they would've used lots of make-up and padding on me to make me look fat. For that, I would have had to wake up three to four hours before the shoot so that I could be ready in time. The entire shooting was slated to be done in London and that would have been a challenge."

Besides Don, which he has completed now, Malhotra has done a film, Pachas Lakh, with four new boys. In September, he will start shooting for E Niwas' My Name is Anthony Gonsalves.

Riteish sketches an alternative career

Building blocks:
Riteish Deshmukh

It's not easy being the Chief Minister's son. But Riteish Deshmukh has been managing very well. The actor has been very busy lately.
Apart from acting in films, his architectural firm, Evolutions, has just completed building two multiplexes in Latur and Aurangabad, both of which should be opening next month.

In an informal chat, he talks about missing architecture, his designing plans and his dad.

Apart from acting, what else have you been up to?
My architectural and designing firm, Evolutions, has just completed two assignments, two multiplexes — one each in Latur and Aurangabad. It's not as if I have completely given up architecture for acting. We design interiors and commercial establishments too.

How long has your firm been operating?
Evolution is in Worli and been operating for six years. I got my architectural degree from Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies, went abroad for a year to practice with a firm abroad, came back to India and have been designing since then.

Recently, you came to the architecture and urban design firm, Kapadia Associates in Parel for a hush-hush meeting. The rumour is that you are planning to buy a bungalow.
That's not true. I had gone to discuss an architectural building that Evolutions had designed with Kiran Kapadia (director of Kapadia Associates). He is a very bright architect and was my teacher at Kamla Raheja. Since my college days, he has been very helpful and I always consult him for all my projects.

Acting or architecture — what do you find more creatively satisfying?
Both are equally satisfying. Acting is for people and makes one more visible and you come into the public limelight. The results are instant and people react to you much more.

Do you miss designing?
Lately, yes. I have been missing architecture a lot, especially the designing board. I haven't been getting the time ever since I joined films but now I have decided to carry my sketch book with me on the sets and start sketching again — anything from buildings to furniture and people.

Which is your favourite architectural monument in the world, and in India?
In the world it's the glass pyramid at The Louvre designed by IM Pie, while in India, it's the multiplex that my firm designed at Aurangabad.

What are your hobbies?
I like to relax with my friends, catch up on cricket, read books, play snooker at home and watch films. I love watching films.

Are you happy with your film career?
I am more than happy. I have been luckier than other actors who have joined films. I am taking it one step at a time. There is so much to achieve yet. I just want to do some good work.

Today, people call your dad (CM Vilasrao Deshmukh) 'Riteish Deshmukh's father' more than they call you 'the CM's son.' How does that make you feel?
I think that comes only from the kids who watch my films. I don't know how to react. I can't weigh both to see which is more important to me as I am not in contention with him to prove who is more famous. I am very happy and proud to be his son. My head rises with pride when I'm called his son.

Have you stepped out of his shadow today?
I hope I have. The shadow is so big that it takes a while to come out of it. I know there are certain responsibilities I have to be aware of and things I am not supposed to do. I abide by that. In social situations, I perform on autopilot. The decorum has to be maintained.

Any pressure from your parents to get married?
No. I have a very open relationship with them. In this generation, parents don't push for marriages out of pressure. Those days are gone. I just want to work hard, do some good films, gain some stability in my career and become known as the best architect in India.

Riteish's upcoming releases

Subhash Ghai's Apna Sapna Money Money
"It's an ensemble cast and an out-and-comedy based in a basti and what happens when a diamond necklace finds its way there. I play Shreyas's (Talpade) friend who comes to sort out his love story and I keep changing my looks — from a 55-year-old Kathak dancer to a Nepali to a woman. It also stars Sunil Shetty, Koena Mitra, Riya Sen and Celina Jaitly."

Sohail Maklai's Cash
"It's a stylish action-thiller directed by Anubhav Sinha, and also stars Ajay Devgan, Zayed Khan and Shamita Shetty."

Indra Kumar's Dhamaal
"There's Sanju, Arshad Warsi, Ashish Choudhury and Javed Jaffrey. It's a situational comedy. Sanju is a senior hero but he treated me like a younger brother. He has no attitude."

Sajid Nadiadwala's Hey Baby
"Directed by Sajid Khan, the film also stars Akshay Kumar and Fardeen Khan. It's a comedy."

Sujoy Ghosh's next
"I can't reveal much. It's a children's film."

Chubby Himesh chucks chicken

NOW

THEN

Look harder and you'll get a glimpse of the newly lean Himesh Reshammiya. Before he embarked on his month-long tour of North America, the music director and playback singer undertook the rigorous General Motors diet program.

The result: he has knocked off over six kilos in a week's time. So what prompted this ubiquitous nasal singer to go on a diet? "It's always better to sport a lean and thin look. The diet ensures healthy living," he says.

Ghaas-phoos!

Known for cleansing toxins, the General Motors weight loss program was recommended to him by a friend. "This friend of mine just happened to discuss this diet. He guaranteed remarkable results. I was simply experimenting with it. But now the results are for everyone to see," adds Reshammiya.

During the diet, he abstained from fried and fatty food. He would chomp on fresh fruits, vegetables, paneer and tomatoes.

Reshammiya, who usually relishes grilled chicken, says, "Day 1 was only for fruits, Day 2 had vegetables, Day 3 was a fruit and veggie combo. On Day 4, I ate some paneer and tomatoes, Day 6 had bananas and milk, and on Day 7 I finally ate some brown rice along with vegetables and fresh fruit juice."

Compliment time!

After successfully completing the diet programme, Reshammiya got a deluge of compliments. "Who doesn't like getting compliments? My family and friends went overboard complimenting me for looking thin and fit," he says.

Talking further about his experience, he says, "The best part about this diet program is that there're no strict specification on the amount of food intake. You can keep eating throughout the day."

However, the weight loss has caused some wardrobe trouble. Reshammiya reveals that he had to discard most of his denims, as they no longer fit him. "The denims are all oversized now. I have to stuff my wardrobe with fresh clothes. But I don't mind it as long as I get to feel good about myself," he says.
