Hi everyone! ๐Ÿ˜Š

First off, that was a wonderful debate! ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘

No matter who wins, each of you did an amazing job ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Ok- I will refer to T., MNMS, and Mrs.Eisha.SRK as TEAM 1 and ~Khizer~, Heartgirl, and gk_09 as TEAM 2

TEAM 1- You had did an amazing job. You had great opening statements and were always ready for rebuttals, especially T. ๐Ÿ‘ You definitely worked well together and supported each other. However, there were times when I found the debate falling apart as you tried to prove other points. It seemed like we were forgetting what the actual debate was while we got side tracked. But overall, you had a very articulate and well organized team.

TEAM 2- Again, great team work here! Heartgirl did a wonderful job with rebuttals and analyzing the other side's statements. After a while, it seemed as though the same points were being beaten to death- and for a while no one brought in fresh points. But ~Khizer~ did a great job bringing new ideas into the debate. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Like I said, both of you worked hard on rebuttals. There were times when each of you made statements that refuted your own thoughts earlier. This happened more with TEAM 1, but TEAM 2 did not catch them always. TEAM 1, however, did a good job in trapping the other side whenever they said something against their own points. I am thinking that it was easier to see this as an outsider who is only reading, because I fail to notice these things while I debate as well.

I have to say- that considering how well both of you did, making my decision is becoming very difficult.

I loved TEAM 2's use of pictures, and more real life examples. TEAM 1 went more into historical references. When I first read the debate topic, I was thinking of what is going on with culture right now. So it was interesting to see how each team tried to defend their argument and what perspectives they took on the topic.

TEAM 1 was very easy to understand and gave a well written reply to the opposing sides points, but TEAM 2 got their point across faster with less words.

From both sides, I would have liked more evidence with more citations. Sometimes, debators gave too many generalizations or used their own personal observations as the whole picture. This happened to both sides.

As far as which side was more active, I think T. led the way for TEAM 1, and Heartgirl and Khizer wrote the most for TEAM 2.

I want to make one point- during the debate, a major point was that Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi culture was just changing to include better things and new technologies and styles. Hmmm but doenst changing and evolving involve taking new things in and leaving some old things out? So doesnt that mean that an old part of our culture has been lost? And that means the culture is changing and becoming different. So in that case we are losing part of our culture- but that doesnt meant its bad or good.

Anyway, I want to clarify that I did not make my choice by whose side I agreed with or by what members I know and am friends with. My decision is entirely unguided by bias.

THE WINNER: T.
RUNNER UP: Heartgirl
WINNING TEAM: Team 2 of Heartgirl, ~Khizer~, and gk_09

I just wanted to tell all particpants . Please respect the opinion of each and every judge. We have the best panel here. Please do not PM me or them because of a suggestion they made to improve your debating skills.

We have Abhijit who's our respected in house Doctor besides being a great debator.

We have S.priya who is our inhouse respected lawyer and a Global Moderator.

We have J.Prasad who is popular for her witt and humour and is a moderator too besides being a succesfull career woman.

We have Ms.Bholi.Bhali, another very good debator and a global Moderator.

Lastly we have wildblossom, we have read her posts in the DM often. She herself is a very sharp debator.

Also i would like you to know S.Priya is from India so will cast her vote by the end of the day. I have requested all Judges to cast their vote by the end of Sunday. However we must understand everybody's time is very precious and they will certainly take out time and cast their vote. So please have patience and don't PM me and ask me about when will every one vote.๐Ÿ˜›

And remember please DO NOT post here if you aren't a judge or the organiser of this debate. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Aparna and Soumya, as Abhijeet said, you guys have done a great job with this contest and of course, the contestants have responded with equal vigour and enthusiasm.

Wildblossam and Abhijeet before me, have done a fantastic job of analysing all the contestants and their responses and writing out a detailed analysis on why they have gone with their choices. Its a tough act to follow, but I shall certainly attempt it.

For now, I am putting my votes here, so that I do not delay the voting process, but will be back here, in say about three hours to edit my post and add my comments. (Sorry, Monday morning blues ๐Ÿ˜ณ )

Winner :- T.
Runner Up :- MNMS

Team:- Team 1

This does not mean that Team 2 did not do well in their debate or that your arguments or the points raised by you were not good enough. It does not cast any shadow on your debating skills either. I have been following the contest since you started writing, and believe me, when I sat down to analyse and write my votes last night (India time) I could not put it down to one person or two. If T was good with her references, Khizer was great with bringing in newer areas of discussion to put forth his argument. MNM point by point rebuttal style was good, equally (sometimes casually) by heartgirl making this indeed a good debate contest and I enjoyed myself through out this session. Eisha SRK was a great team support member for Team 1 too.

I did note a few points which I had learnt in the initial years of my career and my debating days, which I will come back and edit and post here.

Thank you for giving me an oppurtunity to be a part of this competition. On a rainy evening, when the sky is overcast and the sun is in hiding, there is nothing more than a good debate over a cuppa tea. I had a fantastic time last evening reading through the myriad of colours and analysing each point as Bombay was under seize of the Lord of Rains again.

You guys rock ๐Ÿ‘

Comments.

Team 1 overall had a slight advantage because of the extensive reasearch that they had done on the subject. The arguments were not just theories propogated but fully supported by evidence, giving complete back up for their propositions.

One point which, in my opinion, went against Team 2, was the occassional use of flippant answers to some points of debate.

This is something we learnt in the initial days of entering the legal profession.
When in an argument, always treat your opponent as your equal. When you reply back, it has to be with respect. Answers like

you are presenting things based on reasearch & theories and nnto atually wat u blv in! Anyways, was nice debating against you!

and another one quoted by Abhijit Shukla above and a few others which I had noticed, goes against these accepted first principles of debates (in my opinion). It is said that you resort to such answers only when your own conviction is not strong. This may or may not be true, but it is considered as a sign of one.

As I told earlier, this does not in any manner mean that the Team 2 was lagging behind in any respect but the result is just indicative of the slight advantage enjoyed by team 1 because of the precise manner of posting, the back ups provided and the analytical approach adopted.

LOL...yes, JP the last to answer.

Following Wildblossom's, I will also refer to T., MNMS, and Mrs.Eisha.SRK as TEAM 1 and ~Khizer~, Heartgirl, and gk_09 as TEAM 2.

Here we goโ€ฆ

First off I want to say that I was completely amazed at how much talent IF possesses. I dunno about anyone else, but I sure learned from this challenge!

It was a roller coaster ride for me reading everyone's argument. I am on the border on this issue about whether or not we are loosing our culture through this process of westernization and this debate gave me a chance to rethink my own values. Ironically, I am still on the border cuz everyone gave such a compelling arguments either for or against.

Anyway, as I am the last one to respond and most of the judges have already said everything that I had thought about saying, especially Abhijit, I don't want to hold up the voting process so I will just second Abhijit's comments to wrap up.

Without further adieu

THE WINNER: T. โ€“ I-F's MVP!
RUNNER UP: Heartgirl โ€“ I-F's jaan!
WINNING TEAM: T., MNMS, and Mrs.Eisha.SRK - super duper combination!

The not so winning team: ~Khizer~, Heartgirl, and gk_09 - You guys still rock! I look forward to seeing you in action in the near future! Honestly, I think even to be in the debate challenge you really have to know how to debate and you should be glad to know that you have that talent!

Like Bholi said, I would read and forget who said what and read all over again! ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ˜ณ It took awhile for everyone's comments, arguments, opinions and rebuttals to process in my little mind. Holy tamoli, kya debate tha! And now I have to apologize cuz I took so much time reading, I ran out of time to compliment each and everyone of the debators. Overall, fantastic job!

Until the next debate!

Yay !! Now that we finally have every judges votes in we can finally annouce in our next post the winners !!

I just wanted to add an organisers note that all of us in the DM Dev team enjoyed organising this debate especially because we have such excellent debator amongst us.

I had a great time reading each teams argument and i don't need to add any comments as Abhijit and Priya gave every debator excellent feedback. If i was to vote i would have voted the exact same way as the majority of the judges did.

I once again want to re-iterate please take all the comments in a constructive manner. You all are really good ,but to become even better you MUST be opened to ideas to improve.

Well thank you every one for particpating !!
