Seriously. And I am being totally serious here. Why do you watch this tripe? OK i have an excuse I am a male. But you guys are majority female!

So ladies here is your chance. Please justify to me why you lap it up. The saas/bahu saga which forms the bulk of Indian serials.

We have seen the way Gopi and Rashi get treated by their in-laws. I think slaves are treated better! And now MJ informs me of a certain Kairee which had a mil trying to put hot coals in her dil's mouth amongst other vile forms of "punishment"

Are you so sick? Indian woman I mean. Is this what pleases you? Is this what you want to watch? Obviously it is. Otherwise the producers and directors wouldn't be showing it.

So where exactly is your woman's lib? Or do you love being treated like 5th class citizens? Cos I see people up in arms cos an actress got replaced but I see no-one protesting tracks that should not even see the light of day. Where were the protests when Gopi was being treated like dirt huh? Where were the protests when a girl was just married off without even a choice in the matter? No wait. You did nothing. You didn't even write a one line email to show your distaste in the matter!

What gives ladies? Tell me. How do you live with yourself knowing you are supporting an unjust system which treats woman like possessions. Heck you glorify it!

The most amazing part... I will see lots of you protesting about how you are different. And you will say but my mil treats me badly too. But guess what. When you get a dil yourself you will treat her like dirt too. Hypocrites the lot of you!

That was my thought for the day. Try and deny it. Go on. I dare you!

Could it be because it make me feel that my MIL is not so bad?
I only like the shows where there is a super hot couple. I guess you need the heroine to be mistreated so she can be rescued by her knight in shining armour. 😃

Yes but why are indian mil's such she devils sandy? I don't see it in other races to be honest. It's like they take pride in treating their dil's like dirt. Is it because they were treated like dirt and cannot break this vicious cycle?

It really is a shame for indian woman the world over.

But what gets me the most is that whatever is shown on tv cannot compare to what happens in real life. And that is an even bigger shame!

That was a bold post indeed...most of the mom in laws doesnt like their DILS.. Its a fact... not even a singe DIL thinks her MIL is like her mom... in old days ,the war front was hot and MIL had an upper hand... but in these days its rather a cold war...either party wont strike openly... but stil there is a war!!!! these serials are like virtual imagination... showing us all our inner most raw feelings... that gives a kinda emotional satisfaction and a sadistic pleasure ...😉

Thank you for your honesty 👍🏼 Bold post indeed. But I have never believed in shying away from the truth.

I see it as a vicious cycle. My mil treated me like dirt so I will treat my dil like dirt. And it also stems from indian woman worshiping the ground their sons walk on. So no female is ever going to be good enough for their spoilt rubbish brat! You know the more I think about it the more it sickens me! 🤢

There is one thing I disagree with in your post though. I think if you look at rural and backward areas you will find even worse treatment of dil's than what the serials are showing! It's not a cold war. It's out in the open, condoned by all who stand by and watch!

I have no idea why I watch this...seriously I don't. I never even watched an Indian serial until last year and that show was IPKKND which is somewhat different from this show, but there is abuse there too.
You're right to say we are hypocrites because I would never tolerate this behavior in my own life yet I support a show that's portrays abuse.
I think the thing is that these shows are so different from the people I know and who I've always grown up around. As most of you may have realized I am not from India so my culture is very different, maybe it's the novelty of a culture and it's traditions that are so different from mine that attracts me to this show?
I dunno, will need to ponder your words some more.

I also wonder where the shock factor has disappeared to. Usually the in law issue is treated like comedy in the west, like "Meet the Parents". But in Indian TV serials, we see something more like the "SAW" franchise with some masala and heavy makeup/clothes/jewelry.

I guess such behavior/mentality is normalized to a huge extent. Perhaps many women from desi backgrounds are taught that their mother in laws will hate them and will be evil. Not only that, but women are also taught to endure and not cause a stir or create more problems by speaking up. This is why the "ideal bahus" on TV are usually submissive and don't speak up for themselves when injustice has occurred to them...but on the other hand, the negative female characters are usually the outspoken ones who will express their opinions.

And that kind of thinking is what these shows make a profit and fame out of.

YS shaun, Indian mom's are the world's most possessive moms especially for their sons... this possessiveness make them the worst MILs possible... This vicious cycle will not be broken as long as this possessiveness stays!!! every gal wud take an vow that she wont be like her MIL..but end up exactly alike...But these days education and diplomacy stop them doing any outrageous actions .but stil I think its all in genes 😛 U r correct about the rural areas... may be its coz of lack of education and lack of exposure to the world...

shaun very nice and intriguing post...

but for me serials or shows are just for time pass and entertainment... and i watch them because i have some time...when i can't see a MIL putting hot spatula on her DIL's hand.. i have option at my discretion not to watch..move on to other show.,.. when the other show has something which i detest... i move to some other show...there is hardly 1 or 2 shows in the last 20 years where i watched it from start to end...i just can't continue to watch the same non-sense day in and day out..

yeah i do agree. .. when protests are made for everything ...why not a protest for showing such a pathetic and disgusting tracks in the shows...because the sufferings of the women or female lead is what creates the needed drama... and which brings the TRPs...

take SNS...Gopi suffered suffered and suffered - TRPs sky rocketed.. when she is seen being happy from Jan 2012 - the TRPs started to go down .. because she is not crying anymore...

call it sadism or call it being mean and nasty .. this is what people want to see,. drama.. not in SNS ,, but in other shows.. these female leads definitely win in one situation or the other.. they fight in one situation or the other.. they solve their problems in one situation or the other - to see the female lead winning in such rear situations.. the Indian Women bear to see and endure all the sufferings ..

Why they love or not cannot be justified... it's just they love watching it.. the makers make the show show the viewers want it.. the viewers watch the show as how the makers dish it out.. it is a vicious circle.. where you cannot precisely blame the viewers or the makers for dishing out such pathetic tortures of burning your DIL's hand...🤢

if i don;t like any of Indian serials... there was period from Aug 2009 to Aug 2011 i stopped watching all Indian serials .. caught up on all US channels..loved the shows watched food networks and HGTV .. .. watched more movies than ever..

it is at our discretion to watch or not
