Munni, yes, when it actually happens to you, your reactions are so different to the way you would expect the situation to be handled. And being confrontational is not always the best way to get results. My MIL always criticised the way I did stuff, for example cooked. So one day I sweetly asked her to cook something because my dish always came out wrong. From that day on, she never said anything bad about my food, otherwise she would have to make it herself in future.

Whilst Indian TV may be exaggerated there is still some reality in the behaviour of MIL and DIL.

So ladies here is your chance. Please justify to me why you lap it up. The saas/bahu saga which forms the bulk of Indian serials.

We have seen the way Gopi and Rashi get treated by their in-laws. I think slaves are treated better! And now MJ informs me of a certain Kairee which had a mil trying to put hot coals in her dil's mouth amongst other vile forms of "punishment"

Are you so sick? Indian woman I mean. Is this what pleases you? Is this what you want to watch? Obviously it is. Otherwise the producers and directors wouldn't be showing it.

So where exactly is your woman's lib? Or do you love being treated like 5th class citizens? Cos I see people up in arms cos an actress got replaced but I see no-one protesting tracks that should not even see the light of day. Where were the protests when Gopi was being treated like dirt huh? Where were the protests when a girl was just married off without even a choice in the matter? No wait. You did nothing. You didn't even write a one line email to show your distaste in the matter!

What gives ladies? Tell me. How do you live with yourself knowing you are supporting an unjust system which treats woman like possessions. Heck you glorify it!

The most amazing part... I will see lots of you protesting about how you are different. And you will say but my mil treats me badly too. But guess what. When you get a dil yourself you will treat her like dirt too. Hypocrites the lot of you!

That was my thought for the day. Try and deny it. Go on. I dare you!

But, why are you watching it??😊 Any specific reason?

I have never watched any serial till date. Nothing, and I repeat nothing in the world will make me watch a regional serial 😔. When I am trapped in the tv room with my mom, I am mostly pulling my hair and am going šŸ˜•šŸ¤¢ and could never understand how my mom is actually enjoying the nonsense!
The only serial I ever watched is this idiotic Saathiya only because I was sucker for the young couples. Most episodes, I am either closing my eyes and removing headphones from my ears to not hear what nonsense Urmila-Rashi are plotting or fastforward all the scenes of Gopi's humiliation. And the never ending camera rotation! What's up with that??

I only watched for the damn love story and after the replacement I haven't watched a single episode. Also I liked to ogle at the rich modi mansion šŸ˜› and sarees.
I have no idea how or why others watch these serials.

Agree with your points Vizag. I get very frustrated watching it and lately have put it on mute while I do something else. I don't even watch it together with my parents anymore. It used to be a communal family thing for us to do, but lately it has lost its lustre.

But Shaun can you tell us WHY DO YOU WATCH IT? Some of your points, were very harsh. You have literally labelled the Indian women who watch this show as "sick" that we "love being treated like 5th class citizens"; that we have no sense of "women's lib" and that somehow it's hard for us to "live with ourselves" because we watch this show. That is incredibly unfair and insensitive and did you not think it was offensive to us Shaun?

But your approach has got a reaction and got us all talking.I like to live by a philosohy that says, treat your neighbour like how you would like to be treated. So, if ever I was treated harshly or unfairly, I would never want to evoke the same treatment to someone else, just because I suffered it. This is not progress. I can't comment on the MIL - DIL dynamic because I have not encountered this relationship yet. But I would hope I apply the same principles of treating others with kindness.

As to the other point, as to why we watch the show. It's for the romance, the love, the couple coming together after an eternity of hardship. It's not an uncommon wanting, it's apparent in every single romantic movie, be it western or non-western!

Yes Gopi is a woman who is plighted and Rashi too maybe treated as a slave. But you cannot say that we support this type of behaviour because so many of us would not show our protest to the storylines in the forums as we do day by day. We like to see the happiness not the tears and the miseries. I for one, would love Gopi to evoke women's lib, but the show does not take that direction. It is simply written as it is written. We are not sick just because we watch it.

Next time, if you have such strong accusations as that, hail it at the writers and not at us!!!

My views are :
1. Viewers in India want such shows, especially the housewives.. Again I am not generalizing, many mother in laws are good and many r bad..
2. DILs don's speak up... For MILs, their sons are most precious and they think that DILs come into t heir house only to take of her son and his children..
3. No respect what so ever.. no love and dont' consider them as their daughters.. and vice versa, no DILs consider their MILs as their moms, because they don't get that kind of love.. it is simple..
4. Some MILs are jealous of bahus because they think that they will snatch their sons away and they try to control..
5. There can be many many reasons and this type of attitude is there for a ages, so it takes ages to correct it too..
6. These days girls are modern, educated, working woman.. they hv some sense of how to handle situations, in those days, DILs were not educated and had no common sense..
To summarize, if serials like SNS are made, women in India should protest, because it is degrading daughter in law and by watching these serials, people have adopted to good and also bad.. it is like they have made it their life and they also get addicted to this. I have known so many people who have said Ekta serials have made them addicted to TV, did not bother about anything that goes on in their house during the show hours.. it starts something like 6.30 till 11.30.. so imagine, how much these are influencing people..
If they did protest, it sends a social message to public and also to production house and channels that it is them who are making women fell n look low in front of their husbands and mils..
But then, it is just an entertainment, some people take it as an entertainment, like me, I just watch, and let go of it, sometimes when I have time, it is just a time pass not that I have to watch them... But SNS is one show that I constantly followed loved how they portrayed Gopi and her willingness to do anything for the family.. other than this, I am not addicted at all...
Hope things change and they try to show us light hearted shows.. I dont' know if you watched Sasural Genda Phool, this is also saas bahu and a join family story, but was done fabulously, with lots of comedy and entertainment I hardly remember any fights or any negativities in this show.. This way it will be entertaining for everybody in the family and it can be watched together...

I only watch such shows hoping that that maybe...just maybe, one morning, the bahu will wake up and after doing her singhaar, she'll tell herself "No more!" It doesn't happen too often though, sadly.

Great topic Shaun. I have actually been thinking why I watch Indian show Saath Nibhana Saathiya. For it is just a story which started as an examplory different concept, but I feel that retaining a no 1 position, it all ended up in a TRP game. The concept changed, and story and everything to maximize the profits. Infact they hardly showed Gohem romance and with Gia exit, they jumped onto everything they could show between Gohem and Raji.

It clearly shows that we viewers are a bunch of fools who believe in high end drama and feel connected to it not virtually but emotionally, physically and mentally. (sorry that is my opinion and I believe so...for I still remember we had many ffs, ss and os and we had many romantic situations for each and everything, but what amazes me is that when actual stuff was shown and whatever crap it was, it was always appreciated by us loyal viewers without any complaint., rather being appraised by all it is proved that they did show all the close moments between the lead pairs in a jiffy only when they got insecure, so it is all a fake TRP game and no story building now, just a money earning game🤢,)
Knowing everything, I still watch the show for Ahem, being an idiot still for some more time and maybe I will continue watching for some more time, but you are right ALL INDIAN SERIALS SUCK TO THE CORE AND I AM HELL BENT and DEAD SURE TO NOT WATCH ANOTHER OF THIS CRAP AGAIN IN MY LIFEšŸ˜†. I prefer to watch Discovery where I can discover new things rather looking for discovery in such pathetic Indian shows. šŸ˜†

Well, they do suck big time..

I guess this is like one of the many topics which used to go around the forum a few months ago.. when not everything was about Gopi or Ahem or Kokila or Rasho or Urmila or anyone else I have missed..

I was IF even before I was watching SNS, I was on a break and someone pointed me to IF. SNS was by fluke, the FFs n the works it was then that I started watching it. It was a story which had heaps of potential but was lost in the number game, TRPs, revenues, slot leader et al

Why does the audience take this crap - A survey was conducted and that is one of the main reasons why most series have a Gujrati background, some have a Punjabi, bengali and a few take the rural Hindi segment. The channels, PHs work around these parameters and set their stories. Stories in a cosmo setting are a recent development. The audience that we speak of is mostly rural or small towners, housewives who unwind watching TV. I am sure there is a audience from the cities but it isn't much. The audience have no choice but to choose and watch from the available sources, a remote is never an option for them... This gives the channels n PHs the chance to create rubbish which is better than the worst.. they end up taking the audience for granted and rightly so, for continually watching rubbish after rubbish..

There were many topics made and discussed about abuse, the unique bond Kokila shared with Ahem, kokilas transformation and her relationship with Gopi. This was definitely refreshing and gave people a much needed break from all things Ekta Kapoor ( where people could die, be lit on the pyre and still come back, where peple had more wives than one and everyone had a dark past except the protagonists who where all white.. ). SNS showed people that things aren't just black n white but life as we know it is majorly grey. People who thought made and presented cases, not everything was glorified and accepted and not everyone was touchy, then.

There is norm for a ideal daughter, bahu, son which drives me insane. Why does a DIL need to know everything, from cooking to cleaning to the religious texts. She has to be perfect. For me, they show nothing but glorified housemaids in forms of DILs..

Indian TV with its huge market has a potential to change the dynamics of the society but everything lags behind when it comes to making money.. The messages ranging from basic education, adult education, equal opportunities, womens lib, action against abuse, human rights, rights of an individual are all lost to the channels, PHs, creatives.. all they need is a slap, a kiss, a rain sequence, a consummation scene to spice things up.. and it is indeed a sorry state of affairs..

I agree with people here, Balika Vadhu is the best thing that is available on Indian TV right now.. The makers have been steadfast and have held on to their social messages and it is very relevant. I am sure it has changed many a mindset or has in the very least got people thinking..

I m always😔 towards injustice to woman. But what do I do.My mil started to watch and I was flawn away in the tsunami of Gina and Gohem chemistry. No other excuses.Well Shaun, I m not going to torture my DILs, if v would haveliving in joint family.I havent remembered about mails but surely made post.Basically I m against torture as I m tortured in my actual life.but most of the people watch for entertainment part.

It seems I m reading updates of "Satyameva jayate" hosted by shaun.

That is not correct Shaun we complained when Rashi's kalakaries got too much I often would go to the indya.com and star plus website and put a complaint in and I would urge others on this forum to go also.

This is the last straw - https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/saath-nibhaana-saathiya/2660904/this-is-the-last-straw

2 places to Complain. Everyone of you...please https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/saath-nibhaana-saathiya/2341524/2-places-to-complain-everyone-of-you-please

If what you are saying is true, then it's dishonest, manoeuvring and mischief activity going on. I won't stand for it, lets go and complain.

The above are just some of the times we've complained to STAR. So it's wrong to say we never said anything ever until now.

Yes I watched the program almost religiously each episode several times analysing all the expressions and the hidden meanings etc, I started to watch from August 2010 so things like Koki's punishment to Gopi for example locked her in the storeroom, or making her wear all those gold's I watched them in one week catching up to the show when I first started, and when we were criticising Koki's character that she was also to blame for Gopi's unhappiness I would often bring that up to illustrate my points. You can see a particularly long post I made criticising Kokila as a mother in law in "Kokila is also at fault" https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/saath-nibhaana-saathiya/1641472/kokila-is-also-at-fault

The reason why I didn't complain to Star about the kalakaries from Rashi on Gopi is I knew it was acting, that Giaa was not actually having her hand grated or pepper in her eyes, similarly like when the serial is introduced Rashi walks in and a mother in law is pouring petrol on her daughter in law, this happens in society in India, so in a drama within a drama the CV's were showing this, so I think the kalakaries show us what is happening there and makes us understand their lives there. I don't live there but I still want to know about them, that's why I was interested to watch an old fashioned serial rather then a modern type serial, because I wanted to see something different (how the bahu will overcome the opposition of the MIL and win her husband when he is so against her), Gopi being obedient and Koki acting so superior and their relationship was beautiful to see, yes it was even funny the way Koki would go on and on about her vau and also how accomplished Gopi was making Koki proud. To me I liked seeing it, when Koki manipulated Aham to marry Gopi, it was wrong off course but it's her son, she knew him well, and it's proved Anita wouldn't have suited him or his family. So what I'm trying to say the kalakaries you mentioned, when they got too much we complained but sometimes we saw the the relations of Goki and loved it, and wanted to see the heroine Gopi how she would overcome Koki and Aham and win them over to her. So the show didn't suck, it was good until they over did it then we complained and they saw their own limits with the audience, also what is expected of them, now we are complaining because the serial not having Giaa there is made to look like a joke, one girl is made love to and another new face is pretending to be our Gopi and is carrying the baby, and all in the serial are acting like it is fine but it's not fine, as those scenes I loved the Gohem scenes that I can't watch with enjoyment. So we fight for them to bring our Gopi, we can be happy.
