Making of G – part 1

Wherever the Handa's that is Mohinder Handa, (M.D Handa Alloys and Steel), his wife Mrinalini Handa and kids Tej 12, Nandini 10 and Aditi 5 went, they elicited one of the only two responses - complete awe or sheer jealousy after all they were a picture perfect family.

If someone were to point out the same to Mrinalini Handa, she would acknowledge it with a polite smile, but the twinkle of her eyes more than reinforced that there was nothing make-believe her world was truly perfect.

Married at a young age to the Handa scion, she did not have to try to hard to fit in the role of a perfect bahu and wife. His powerful, quiet and reserved persona went quite well with her simple, charming and caring nature, also they looked great together. A year into marriage and Tej was born followed by Nandini and than 5 years later Aditi. Her first born had really taken after her husband; very quiet and mature whereas her two lovely daughters were her angels. Her children have been such well behaved kids that when her friends would talk about their children being notorious and an absolute embarrassment in public, she just felt blessed. She surely was living a dream which she had not even dreamt of. Her life was what fantasies were made of.

Indeed it was a fantasy, for one day it all came crashing down - the day when that fated letter arrived.

She had rushed home after a social luncheon only to find her husband home, unusual for him to be home at this time. But what was more unusual was the way he was frantically pacing around the room rummaging through the cupboards and throwing things on the bed. Even before she could ask him anything he had reached for the overhead loft to remove his handbag. She tried asking him but he seemed lost to register anything, She saw him dumping everything carelessly in the bag and her instincts told her that whatever it was, it was indeed grave; she took a deep breath and went to the bed, held his hand and made him sit on the bed and than quietly started rearranging his bag.

He sat there with his head buried in his hands.

She had just closed the bag and secured the locks when the phone rang (no mobiles then) and he sprinted to the hall. (It was his secretary who informed him that he has been booked in an 8.00 flight and all the travel arrangements have been made.)

Mrinalini was worried she had never seen Mohinder so agitated, maybe once some four years back but then ….. he was back before she could further ponder.

He walked up to the bed and stretched his hand to reach for the bag,

She held his hand to stop him and moved closer to him and looked into his eyes, "Kya hua hain? Please bataiye aisa kya ho gaya hain, mujhe bohot darr lag raha hain." Her eyes had started to tear up.

He was still lost.

She held him by his arms and looked into his blank eyes until they had a slight flicker and when she was sure he was listening, she asked him again, tearfully, "Kya hua hai, bataiye mujhe?"

His face contorted in horror as if reliving the pain. "She is dying, I have to go" and tried to move, she moved too, tightening her hold she jerked him. She was really scared. "Who is dying, bataiye mohinder main apse puch rahin hoon?"

"Amrit" his voice sounded like a whisper, but the way he said it; his voice held such emotions she could not comprehend. He removed a paper from his pocket and extended it.

She looked at the paper and than at him. Call it a woman's instinct but she was apprehensive and so with a thumping heart and shivering hands she took it from him. It was a letter – a short one.

Sir,

I know you must be very angry on me for leaving the job the way I left- uninformed.

Lekin main jaanti hoon aap bohot aache ho aur isiliye himmat karke aapse madad ka haath maang rahin hoon.

I have cancer…..I don't have too many days left and as you know I have no one to call my own and so I am begging you to be the guardian of my daughter, Geet.

Please sir, you don't have to take her home, keep her in some hostel – bas usse itna padhaiye ki woh apne pairo par khadi ho sake.

And if possible please forgive me.

-Amrit

'Amrit' her mind raced to try and recollect and than it all came to her 'she was his secretary who had defrauded the company and had run away, Mohinder had tried to trace her but to no avail.'

She looked at him in disbelief. "A secretary! You have raised such a ruckus for a secretary who has cheated on us. Thik hain, she is dying and we should help her, lekin aapko jaane ki koi jaroorat nahin. Hum office se kisi aur ko bhej denge.

"Mrinalini" he thundered and than lowered his eyes and almost pleaded "I have to go, please let me go, she needs me, Geet needs me."

She was enraged, she held him by his collar. "Why ???? Why does she need you? Why does her daughter need you? Why do you have to go?"

"Because Geet is my daughter."

The words kept on ringing in her ears, her hold on him slackened.

He saw her slide down and drop on the floor like a rag doll and immense guilt washed over him. "I am sorry." He knew it was meaningless but still said it. He stood there for a few moments and turned to leave.

He went up to the door, his steps heavy and stopped. He went to his locker and removed something and walked back to her. He sat on his knees facing her. Mrinalini refused to look at him. He sat there until she looked up.

" I know you have thousands of questions," he forwarded a diary towards her, she did not take it, "It will answer most of them." He kept it on her lap and stood up to leave.

She held his leg her voice cracked as she sobbed. "Yeh sab jooth hain bol dijiye sab jooth hain, please…bol dijiye…. don't go…". He bend and removed her hand and held it in his hands.

"Let me go right now. Tum jo sazaa dogi woh mujhe manzoor hain lekin is waqt mujhe jaane do." As he raised himself, she saw her hand slowly slipping from his hands and her world crashed in front of her eyes.

*******

He was very happy today, his coach had praised him and he was the only one in his batch to be selected for the under 13 cricket team.

He had almost run all the way home , when he saw his dad's car parked in the porch his happiness doubled. He could not wait to tell his father.

He saw his dad hurriedly get in the car and drive off even without looking at him. He went inside dejected, to tell his mom, but when he reached her room, his young mind went numb seeing his mother sitting on the floor lifeless. He called out to her, so many times but she did not respond. He was scared not knowing what to do but than he heard his sisters coming home and he somehow managed to tow her to the bed.

All he knew was that he cannot let his sisters see their mother like that and so reluctantly went out. He instructed his sisters to keep quiet and not disturb their mother as she was unwell. After helping in their homework, feeding them and tucking them in bed, he went back to his mummy's room.

******

'THUMP' something fell, something she had to hold onto. She looked down to see what it was – the diary. She had clutched tightly onto it as his hands slipped out of her hands. She lowered her feet to get up and pick it up when she felt something holding her other hand, she turned to see her son, his face streaked with streams of dried tears and her heart lurched. She ran her hand in his hair and covered him up.

She picked up the diary and secured it in her closet, she needed to be alone to read it and a pain shot up her chest as she realized, she was all alone, now.

******

His dad have been away earlier too, but it was never like this his mom was acting to be normal he knew she was sad. He had no idea how to ask her what was wrong without hurting her.

She was aloof, the warmth was missing and he knew by the way she looked in the morning she had cried at night. He just hoped his dad would come home soon and than everything would be alright.

******

Initially her days were marred with anguish, a feeling of being abandoned, stranded – despair, helplessness and angst hit her with various levels of intensity. Then came the feeling of being betrayed and with that anger, resentment bitterness coursed through each pore of her being and then some days all she felt just was a dull ache a pain somewhere so deep she did not know what to do, and than on some days she did not know what to feel so she just went about the daily grind like a clockwork toy.

In the mornings, she just wished the sun would not rise and she won't have to wake up to answer her children's constant questions enquiring their father's return, answer phone calls from office staff or relatives or friends. She would not have to pretend that all is well in her paradise.

Than there was this urge to scream to shout to tell the world, she was wronged - but she did not want the one thing she would invariably get - pity. She was done with all the kindness she was bestowed with – she had appetite for no more.

She had to look ahead and decide what she wanted. But guess it was not in her hands - A letter turned her world upside down and a phone call made her decision for her.

"Mrs. Handa this coach Dandekar, I do not mean to interfere in your personal life ma'am but I hope everything is well"

"Yes sir, it is. Why do you ask?"

"Tej is pretty distracted this days and he has refused to play in the selection matches for under 13 team. I will really feel sorry if he will let this opportunity pass, you see he is already 12, this is his last chance to get into the team. The tournament is going to be in the summer break so he won't miss a lot of school you should reconsider your decision."

"He will definitely play, I'll talk to him."

Her husband was not home for ten days and her son is already acting like a grown up; she will not let her children lose their childhood.

So far her marriage had only been a pretence only she did not know it, now it was her turn to pretend.

*******

It was after 12 days that his dad was back, but he was not alone he had with him a girl in fact she just looked like a doll.

His mom had been really upset after she had come home and one day he overheard her dad and mom fighting and what little he could overhear was that they were fighting for Geet.

His parents fought because of Geet.

His mother no longer smiled because of Geet.

His mom who was so loving and caring, even to beggars had become harsh.

Their home no longer felt like home.

All because of Geet

He decided he did not like her and it was a matter of few days as she will be going to hostel soon and than everything will be as it was before Geet came.

He was shocked the day her mom said that Geet would stay with them forever.

But his mother still did not seem happy and so one day when he got a chance he left Geet in the garden 'accidently' of course.

His parents were worried and even he was scared when her mother pointed out she might get kidnapped or something like that.

They had barraged the driver and maid with questions and his mother for the first time scolded him as he was the one who sent the maid on some errand and asked her to go home directly and told the driver that everybody was in.

His father bailed him out saying he was still small and that all this must have been a big misunderstanding. 'What is more important right now is to find Geet.' He had said .

When she came back his mother had hugged her and had told him she is as much his sister as Nandini and Aditi and he has to take care of her.

Whatever his mother says Geet is never going to be his sister.

ps. Geet if you have not guessed, was 4 yrs old when mohinder brought her home.

more than anything what struck me most in this update is Mohinder Handa. Was the man even bothered about what he has done, let alone being guilty?

Men like these are what makes it all downright awful. Such an ass.

I like Mrinalini Handa for the woman she is. After facing such a huge blow from the man she trusted forever, she still hugged her tight when she went missing. I think that's what makes a woman different from the other gender.
Mohinder on the other hand irks me. It was his mistake wasn't it? Did he even apologize once? Instead of rubbing a responsibility on his wife's head, not caring even once what she might be feeling?
And to top it, at the present scenario, why does he have this cold behavior towards Geet?
It is like a role reversal. While Mrinalini loves Geet like her own kin, Mohinder plays all cold with her. Great! He disgust me.
Awesome work. Do continue soon
