Kalavati Patil, her relationship with various characters

"Those who know not evil, know not good, how would they know Kalavati?"

Thus she stands, a question, a puzzle, an enigma, that creates havoc within the minds of all who know her.

Kala is far from "girly!" but is powerful, proactive, aggressive! she trains, quests, battles and fights just as the boys do! and often much better. She is far removed from generalised females, and one could say she challenges traditional perceptions about the 'purity' of women, as seen in works of fiction, the stereotypes casts, the demure, the coy, the unattainable angel, the dutiful daughter, the silly little wife, the harridan or the doting mother! Kala is neither a paragon of virtue or vice...so is she then a strong female character who like Nakusha, takes control of her own destiny? or is she a rounded, psychologically believable character with multiple layers like her half brother? or is Kala a product of a more recent feminist movement that has produced a more conscious depiction of the roles of women?

Her relationship with herself transcends all other relationships around her. Her own want is prime and pivotal to her and she will climb over people if needs be. Moral qualms and delicacy of relationships she hurls to the winds, when she uses Sudarshan to facilitate her want. She rips her womb out! and boldly defies set rules of motherhood when she blackmail's Kishore into concealing her true nature. She is a infinite presence in PN, which she effortlessly flaunts to no end. But what exactly is her relationship with people that surround her.

Her relationship with, Dutta she bases on recognising how similar they are..Both have blood ties. They both reside at the same address. Both are young and pleasing to the eyes, Dutta is handsome, and Kala is beautiful. Both have a distinct style of dress sense, Dutta in his phatianis of hard colours, blacks, greys, browns and blue; Kala in her fantastic colourful saris and stunning blouses.! Both have a fetish for accessories, Dutta with his ear studs, watch and ring and Kala with her hard to ignore earrings. Both pay attention to their facial grooming; Dutta with his neat contoured stubble, and Kala with her bright lipsticks and defined eye make up!

The pair have adrenaline flowing through their veins. Both focus on Nakusha. Both have a spouse! Nakusha , Kishore. Both have a brother in law Sudarshan! Both have real siblings, Madhu ,Roops Leela. Both look up to Aye Sahib. Lastly both Dutta and Kala hold a pivotal position in the Patil family, he the only son ! and she the eldest daughter... so much so for the alike!

Her relationship with Dutta, now pitched against the differences...

For starters there is the gender difference. Then comes the difference of fathers, followed by mothers also. Dutta is a man of integrity, while Kala is nothing short of corrupt. He is compassionate, while she is cruel . Dutta is pliable when he is with people he trusts, Kala is rigid every which way! He is real, whereas she is dangerously false... He is charitable but she is malevolent. He has a so to speak past love Seema, her past is unknown! Dutta is impulsive , whereas Kala is premeditative!!

Dutta believes in keeping familial bonds, Kala believes in severing blood links!

Finally Dutta loves Nakusha with passion but Kala hates Nakusha with the same passion!!

But in a nut shell, her relationship with Dutta is about competing with her brother, for her mother's attentive affection and for Saata!

With her spouse, she is a disinterested wife, who does her own thing. Her worldly wise, ways of consuming alcohol behind closed doors, poses a contrast against his preoccupation with spirituality. Kala in the main appears to be the stronger partner in the relationship. She knows that he opposes her lack of mothering skills, but chooses to have deaf ears. To the world he appears a hen pecked husband, victim to Kala's overpowering persona. Do you think he would file for a divorce from her, on the grounds of negligence and attempt to murder their child?

With Leela and Roops she is manipulative to the hilt. To her, they are her marionettes closest to her, she caches in on the fact that their are bound by blood ties and hence forth the chances of them refusing to aid and abet with her in her sinister plotting games are quite slim. Besides , she is intelligent enough to realize her status amongst the three, and is swift enough to wield this power. So does this lack of Leela's and Roop's inability to stand up before their elder sister, actually contribute to Kala's dormant undefined mental illness?

For her mother, Kala is the first born child. Thereby she wants to be given the importance of being the eldest, but along the years, the magnitude of her presence lessens with the inclusion of her father's murderer's son into the household. Her affection for her mother is replaced by an undercurrent of jealousy for Dutta as she holds him responsible for usurping her of the birth right of her mother's love. So swept away is she by this envy, that she is blind to all the atrocities she commits even against her own mother. Why could her mother not hear or see the root cause earlier, of why Kala turns to the heinous modus operandi?

With Naku, her relationship is at first that of mistress and maid. She is again brisk to recognise the essential goodness, loyalty, and unconditional love the girl has for her half brother. She sees Naku as a soft target, who she will use as and when, as a pawn. For Kala notes from day one that the chit of a girl, has a sense of duty which supplies her with a personal purpose and meaning... that of being the armour of protection for the one man Kala wants to topple! So yes in Naku she can see a possible obstacle in her path to glory, a threat!. For this is the saint the devil has to slay.. to procure glory. Why can't we accept Kala's animosity towards ,Naku as a normal day to day feature of harmless but natural sharing issue ..sharing her brother's love and money with another woman?

With him it is a matter of a daughter avenging her father's death. She hates him with a vengeance, apart from being her father's killer, she sees him as a useless drunk ,gambler, who adandon's his son and then later on expects her mother to rear his spawn. Rich or not, having to live with his son in the same house, coupled with the unequivocal evidence of her young eyes is justification enough to pay like for like. Out of the two , which does she hate the most the father or the son?

Her relationship with Sudarshan, Chaskar, BG'S, is a that of a female Don. They all dance to her tunes, she manipulates them to sing from the same hymn sheet, and she allows none to be out of tune. They are all miscellaneous characters for her. A means to an end! .. power and the debacle of Dutta's reign. She knows they are like putty in her hands, and although they hate her gutsy garters, they still love to be moulded by her, for they too like her hanker for dominance and supremacy in the home territory. What is with Kala then? this throwing her weight around hench men, this dabbling in the dark shadows of the underworld?...can it be that under her glossed up femme fatal, she really aspires to be the biological male gender that Dutta is? .. does she yearn to be a male, and denounce her woman hood...? is her loathing for Dutta really a yearning to be a young Male don of PW?...

Would someone please explore her relationship with Nana Sahib. Hamlet 53. 28,5. 12

my thanks to my dearest Daya[ Baji] for doing the pictures..

Hamlet...very interesting post...👏 ...love reading it. 😃

I think Kala was bitter...over God taking her father away from her...angry and hate because Damodar was responsible for it...upset over Aayi for not being there for her and loving Dutta more than her...and in the end hating Dutta for his fathers sins.

About Dutta and Kala's relationship...Kala had a very twisted relationship with Dutta...She hated him for what Damodar was responsible of...but at the same time she needed him to admire her...respect her...listen to her...she needed to be the most important person in Dutta's life.

Kala love to hate Dutta...that what gives her life meaning.

If Dutta had not been her brother and Damodars son...I believe Kala would have married Dutta...he was her ideal husband...but even then...she would try to hurt him and kill him to get his power and status.

She want to be superior...even if she had a powerful Don as her husband...she would do what it takes to be superior than him.

Very well said. I second this statement! And she won't just climb over people but threaten to throw her own son over a balcony! I wonder if Kala ever thought herself immortal because she didn't care about leaving anyone behind who would remember her when she was gone.

Moral qualms and delicacy of relationships she hurls to the winds, when she uses Sudarshan to facilitate her want.
Oh, my God! I love how we (or at least I 😆) can interpret this sentence to really, really annoy Kala if she were real! 😉 How she would puke if someone ever mentioned her midnight rendezvous with the ullu were about something other than planning to dethrone Bhao! 🤣

Hey hamlet, a very well written post! Had a great time, reading. So, first of all thank you for the write up. The way you have summed it up, it's touching the boundries of being "perfect" Waise toh you have said it all, still my two cents.

Every relationship, that kala was endowed and the equation she shared , was secondary, to her, the prime being "bhau and tai" relation. Always maintaining the belief that she controls dutta, she didn't even herself realized when dutta became the driving force behind each n every action and reaction of hers.

Indeed she's a strong human character, who belongs to the category of those, who believe themselves as the writer of their destiny, preferring to ignore the fact, that there is God, who holds their, hand helping them write it. Another similarity between the bro sis duo, only difference, dutta assumes himself as craver of his destiny, while kala hallucinates herself to be that for others as well, a prime reason behind "why kala is kala and dutta is dutta"

I'm sure kala and AS must have their share of "mother daughter" moments, but in the whole show through out never kala could be seen recalling them , reason? She was always busy accounting the moments where her brother was being loved by her mother, she very fondly remembers and crib that her half brother still enjoys this facility of resting his head in her mother's lap, but very easily she prefers to ignore the fact that due to all the nourishing and nurturing, now her own ego has become so big fat that it restrains her to go to her mother and accept her faliures. I agree that AS lacked the staunch essential motherly strength, quite many times, but what kala expected from her was the justification of her misdeeds, which if she didn't, she can't be blamed!!! But, yes I agree that children like kala needs special attention from parents, which AS, being the single mother raising four kids, must have failed to do, if only any such special grooming could be provided to her durig her growing years, there are chances that she would have been a quite toned individual.

Even with her sisters, who were her blood relatives, their equation with dutta proved the base of herequation with them, till they hated dutta, she loved them, the moment they didn't she hated them , not for once before locking them, she considered what, who and how they have been to her, it was only dutta.

With her hubby, too, because kishore could not meet the stature of dutta, neither could support or help her manipulating dutta, just like sudarshan, she played a disinterested wife to him,Even as a mother, she saw her child as a pawn to fulfill her desires against dutta, even a Mother couldn't over power the Tai in her!

With nakusha and baaji toh, it was obligatory on her part to hate them! But as far as why her hatred towards "dutta's women"couldn't be taken as a normal sister-in-law's insecurities is concerned, IMHO, it's because normally, when a sister-in-law gets insecure due to another woman in his brother's life, she doesn't plan to kill her, like she did with sups, with naku, she didn't needed to do so, coz the way tasha's marital life accelerated, no body could imagine, it'll reach the destiny called love, when it actually took place, before she could do anything, she was thrown out of what she claimed "her home", and when she came back, within few days she had decoded this "nakusha ke chehre ka raaz" and knew that things are gonna back to square one. Quite possible that if after the second marriage, things have been normal between Baaji, naku and dutta, kala would have kept herself occupied with plotting schemes to harm naku, or back fire baaji's work projects, and may be her horrendous act of planning dutta's accident could be postponed.

As far as her yearn for ruling the "dutta's world" is concerned, for me it was just the same way an adolescent tries to use his father's shaving kit or tries to wear her mother's saree. Coz the only thing he/ she could probably see being in the place of his/her parents is the perks, totally oblivious of the responsibility it brings with it, or the sheer hard work it requires, or the sacrifices it demand. The underworld which she knew, was a place where trading of such stuff took place, which if done by abiding the law, would cost heavy duty, not even in her dreams, this realization stuck to her, that this could be a place where flesh is traded with the same merciless coldness as objects and had it not been "dutta bhau" associated with her, strong chances that destiny would have led her to a circumstance similar to nakusha. She was aware of the fact that just mere the name of DSP is enough to make a bullet, coming towards her, take an about turn, but very easily decided to be unaware from the number of bullets; DSP took to build a stature so high, that even bullets were scared of him. The whole play of female don by her, to me, was just as children play chor police, being completely unware, what it takes to be a thief or cop! She was manipulative, through out her life she manipulated, others, but what led her to her doom was the fact while playing this manipulating game, which often went dirty, she didn't realized that she manipulated herself, the most, she illusioned that she needs dutta for his money, she ignored that she needs him for her survival, just like a parasite!!!

The "kala dutta" clashed that was witnessed, was inevitable, even if SP would not have been killed (accidently) by DP. As long as dutta and kala's path crossed each other in any whatsoever way, it would have happened. Reason, they both were similar in almost every trait yet poles apart on ethical background……….such pairs are born to clash!

Well that was all from my side, and just now I've realized that post transcended itself from being "post" and it's more like an essay, making people yawn…lol, and to top it all, I'm confused that was I evaluating kala's relationship with others or simply bashing her..lol.

I have no words to say how well written this post is..u deserve a bow ..its brilliant the way u have described her relationship with dutta ..their similarities and their differences..how she loved to hate him primarily because first his father killed hers and then her own mother gave so much of love to him ..which according to her was her birth right.

Coming to her relationship with kishore she surely had an upper hand ..infact poor husband had nothing to do except from getting humiliated by her and ringing bells in front of bappa..and I don't think he had the guts to file for a divorce
When aayi saheb comes into picture my heart goes out a little bit for kala..it's difficult to see ur own momloving ur fathers killer's son..also I agree with u that her mom was aware of her intentions and she should have warned dutta

Her sisters really placed her at a pedestal and looked upto her and she took full advantage of that...also both were weak to go against her and preferred to enjoy the comforts with her
Before nakku came in dutta acted the way she wanted him to but later on he started changing which was unbearable for her ..he started being happy and how could she see that silently

Hammie...what a fantastic post 👏.

Its so well written and analyzed ...You deserve a standing ovation my Shakespearean friend ⭐️

Kala wanted control in all her relationships...perhaps with the exception of AS...from whom she wanted unconditional acceptance and being the favored one.

The mistress of manipulation would go to any extent and adopt any strategy to have the upper hand. It was as though her word should be the law. maybe that is why she hated Dutta more...because of the power and respect he commanded over Patilwadi and Ratnagiri.

Naku and Baji were out and out Dutta loyalist and showed her respect bec she was the older and Dutta's Tai.

She dominated Kishore...but I guess by this time Kishore had grown indifferent towards her as she was past redemption. Maybe Anay was the major factor why he remained in that house...
