So one thing is clear, Gayatri never appreciated Aarti as a mother. If she did, she would have never asked the redundant and silly questions she did today. I sympathise with the character, I completely understand her lashing out at Aarti but where I draw the line is her claiming that Aarti does not know what a mother's love is and has no idea how it feels when your son's life is hanging in the balance...ummm I'M SORRY?! COME AGAIN? WHAT THE WHA--? What did you witness just a few hours ago you silly woman? That's right, it is what you are experiencing yourself right now but you are too blind to see it because you don't really understand that Aarti is a mother or that Ansh is her child. To you, Ansh is merely extra baggage that requires storage and minimal maintenance and certainly is not worth 10 crores!
But this takes me back to the first scene when Gayatri saw Aarti with Ansh and approved of her. We all assumed at the time that she was impressed by the mother in Aarti but perhaps even at that point she conveniently blocked Ansh out of the picture and saw only the lively but graceful young woman that Aarti is. Even from then, it becomes apparent, she was not looking at Aarti as a mother but as a girl, somehow separable from her son because she wanted a real family. Little did she know that "ansh" is not external to Aarti but a part of her as his name suggests. She can cut him off and function the way she could cut a limb off and function! But somehow the Scindia parents are so blinded by their own "success" as defined by society that they are nowhere willing to accept that something alien to them could be right and they could be wrong.
I think the worst thing about Gayatri's rant today was that it completely stripped Yash of agency. I spent my whole last take dedicated to how Yash had broken the gender and blood relation stereotypes of fatherhood and redefined the term for himself and Gayatri, by accusing Aarti of causing Yash's current condition along with Ansh, is completely undermining the great leap of love Yash took with this gesture, and the satisfaction, the SUKOON that it gave him. This was a choice he made, not bad luck that Aarti brought! In her eyes Yash is imprisoned as a child with no knowledge of what he wants, easily manipulated, who needs to be told what is good for him, as are all their sons. That is frankly insulting to any man, and especially a man of Yash's character.
But it has also begun to dawn on the other Scindia brothers how utterly helpless they are in their own home despite being grown men with responsibilities and maturity. For the first time their parents are not doing the right thing and they know it. They are respectfully approaching the throne of the king and laying their complaint at his feet, but this won't last if they continue to be unheard. It was wonderful to hear Pankaj speak up today, and that too on behalf of Yash, hitting exactly the right nerve for his mother.
To be honest, I think the Scindias have bit off more than they can chew. They wanted to project an image of being progressive role models without actually believing in what they were doing. Their ulterior motive was to get an indebted bahu and accolades but what they have instead is a revolutionary and a pocket-sized revolutionary! Aarti is not doing anything to the others, contrary to Gayatri's constant chant. She is merely being herself, and the Scindias are outing themselves to their open minded and righteous children by not following through with the promises they made when they married Aarti into the family. They are the cause of their own undoing and that has been beautifully woven.
If yesterday was my day to fall in love with Yash, today is my day for Aarti. She was deliberately abandoned and yet she came back, she fought for her and Ansh's right to see and speak with Yash, a right that he gave them hours before. Today they were treated with all honesty to the mindset of the Scindias, made to live like outsiders in a house that was meant to accept them. But that didn't stop Aarti from being the only one to hear Yash's barely audible groans, to relieve his thirst, to lessen his pain as he tossed and turned. And in turn he grabbed on to her hand. She wasn't supposed to be there but HE wanted her to stay, he held on to her and that is what strengthened her resolve not to leave until she spoke with him, asked for his forgiveness. I couldn't help but think of her first morning at Scindia house where we all debated whether it was a good idea for her to go looking for Ansh despite Gayatri telling her not to. I am glad she did it then because it got established as a trait of her character and when she did it again today, I thought with endearing delight, "That's our Aarti!"
