Meet Dilshad Pastakia, one of the most sought after hair stylists in Bollywood.
Bollywood A-listers have her on speed dial, putting it to good use. Getting midnight calls isn't a biggie for Dilshad Pastakia. She even recommends shopping destinations and maid services to Rani and Preity. Oh, and she also cuts their hair.
Dilshad's hold over SRK's follicular roots is so strong that when she was pregnant, SRK went without a haircut for 6 months.
Just back from a P&G beauty conference in Australia on beauty products like Olay and SKII, she's brimming with new ideas, especially since they're from Nicole Kidman and Naomi Campbell's stylist Sam McKnight.
Her latest project was 'KANK' (Kabhie Alvida Na Kehana) with Rani, Preity, SRK, Karan Johar and Manish Malhotra. You'll see her work everywhere — from SRK's 'Mohabbatein' (she and SRK mustered up the courage to tell director Aditya Chopra that SRK's look was going to be completely overhauled) to 'Ashoka'. "We worked 14 hours for 'Ashoka' — just to glue the extensions," she grimaces at the memory.
On call almost 24/7, she spends her time off with her 2-year-old son and HIP (Hair India People) — an association of hair dressers including Adhuna Akhtar, Hakim Alim, Savio Jon and others.
Her relationship with the stars exists on a different level. "I'm extremely close to them, but I don't socialize with them." But don't be surprised to find Rani or Preity waiting along with you at her salon at Bandra. "They don't come in as stars. People are so scared about their hair that they will do anything to make you feel comfortable," she says, adding that Mallika Sherawat is the only one who requests a cut after shop hours. "You can't come in and have people ogling at you!"
For now, she's busy pleasing the lesser mortals in her salon. They swagger in wanting a John Abraham cut, considering she was the one who convinced him to wear his hair long. She takes one look and asks them to grow their hair and come back after 7 months. Considering it's coming from the star hairstylist herself, you can be sure they scamper off, knocking off the days on the calendar with feverish enthusiasm.
