Dropping in here after a long break. Actually I had stopped watching PR pre-leap when all the nonsense related to Soham-Varsha was going on
However, I was recently on vacation to India for 4 weeks and was roped into watching PR by default as everyone else seemed to be liking it and the TV was on. Everyone very happily filled me in on what was going on and idenfifying the adult children for me and also on the Canada angle.
After returning I check out the PR forum and am back to your commentaries. I am not sure I want to start watching the episodes online but now I can at least put actor faces to the characters when I read about them. Your commentaries are more fun and entertaining than the serial itself.
What I was shocked to observe in India was the more regressive the writing and storyline (Saath Nibhana Saathiya and Diya our Bati Him) the more people watched it and the higher the TRP's. The more mahaan and sacrificing the female lead the more appealing she was (Archana, Pratigya and Gopi vahu). They have a large following in women in the 60+ age group who possibly make up the population who watch TV in prime time and thus contribute to the TRP's.
Purvi seems to be a younger version of Archana and hence getting the mass appeal. I watched a Star News segment - the SBS/SBB kinds where they showed a shot of Purvi butting heads with Sachin outside a court. The voiceover said that the judge had given a verdict where Manav-Archana were required to live together for 6 months to try and resolve their differences and if they cannot do so then the divorce will be finalized after 6 months.
Just a heads up as to what to expect in the next track...
Soap- critic, very interesting post….it was only a few days back I was commenting how the TRPs of PR was high inspite of all the nonsense that has been dished out to us, you post makes a lot of sense…I actually watched a promotional episode of Saath Nibhana Saathiya when Dish was doing some promotion of the channel, and since I knew it to be a popular show in India I watched…and boy I was horrified…it was a an extreme mental abuse episode where both bahu's were mightily afraid of their Saas(?)…and Gopi's husband was abusive and irritating to the core…I actual at that instant thought 'God PR is far far better"…I guess as you say for a Senior Indian these serials kind of strike a chord somehow as to 'how a ideal bahu' should be, I don't know…but then I look at my mom and how she as a Saas behaves and it confuses me further, because she is every bit different to these TV saas..I almost feel that there might be a (some) disconnect between the Urban and rural Veiwers and their likes and dislikes…I guess we will never know what is the 'real' appeal of these unrealistic serials for their audience…
I am so dreading the moment when the "court' forces Arman to stay together…I am sure TRPs will be high and viewers will say 'how an adopted daughter is better' than their 'blood' kids…it will be sure a torture and am sure the track will go over months…the audience will simply believe it is possible to force middle aged adult ppl to live together due to some 'Godly ' forces…it is weird how the serials play with with people sentiments almost forcing them to 'experience' an alternate reality….very interesting indeed…
