UNWANTED
The house was literally huge as I could see.. I remember clearly the nervousness that had me clench my fists in tension as I stood in front of the 18th century mansion. It reminded me of the big mansions of the English countryside straight taken out from the pages of an Austen or a Bronte novel.
I was solemnly greeted by Mrs. Peterson, a British lady in charge of greeting outsiders, umm you may call her'..a housekeeper. She had a round face with freckles all over' her hair was meticulously tied into a bun.
She took me by my hand and led me to a huge room 'probably their waiting room'
The walls were so high that I felt that I might sprain my neck if I tried to look further.
Mrs. Peterson gestured me to sit on one of the sofas kept at the centre of the room.. She was kind enough to give a glass of water as she thought I would be thirsty from my 4 hr long drive. As I took the glass I could feel a shiver down my spine'and I shivered a little as I could hear footsteps down the hallway.
I rose to my feet nervously as I saw two people approaching towards me with utmost dignity.
" I am Mrs Shekhawat'and he is my husband'" she paused as she held out her hand to shake mine. I was about to touch their feet as it is customary for any young Indian as a token of respect for their elders. But I was stopped mid way'.. "Dear'now that you are going to live with the Shekhawats you need to understand that we have certain decorum and you are expected to follow'" Mrs Shekhawat looked intently at me and continued..
" Your mother had been my dear friend but she was stupid enough not to realize her mettle and got married to a man who was unworthy of her in the very sense of the term' Anyway now that you belong here'I would like Mrs. Peterson to teach you the ways how we Shekhawats want you to be' you have to remember that now you are a part of the most wealthy and respected family of England and dear you are henceforth requested to behave likewise. And now with all of this, we would like to welcome you to 13A Nottingham place ' Shekhawat's residence."
" Yes ma'am I will try to remember every word you said to me.. and I can assure you that your faith will not be unjustified. And thank you for welcoming me to this house and I will try not to trouble you ever with my behaviour as long as I am here." This was all I could manage to say to Sir and Mrs Shekhawat.
They nodded at Mrs. Peterson and then smiled at me which seemed to be quite half hearted to me may be because my situation reminded me of a caged canary. As they left Mrs Peterson took me upstairs to show me my present room which was a small room at the attic.
My room was small yet I somehow felt glad that I could be away from the unnatural world of the Shekhawats. Unnatural because everything seemed to be so utterly practiced. As per Mrs Peterson no body in this huge mansion ever talked to the other unnecessarily. They all like to be in their own make belief world. They do not communicate with outsiders much which they feel would be below their dignity.
"Just freshen yourself up then you will have to meet Mrs Shekhawat's children. She has 2 daughters and a son and mind you they are impeccably well mannered so just see to it that you don't end up embarrassing yourself in front of others."
I kept my head down.
