Part 33:
What Geet saw as she came down the stairs made her forget all that she wanted to say. Her Papaji was being complimented on how well his pagdi suited him and all her relatives were looking at him in envy.
Geet felt a strange pain in her heart seeing her father's face glowing. She couldnt do this to him. Not after everything he had done for her. All she was today was only because of him. If this marriage did not happen, He would die of embarrassment and shame and she would die a slow death seeing him suffer like that.
She decided then and there that she would go through with the wedding and talk to Maan about it later. Too many people's happiness depended on her and she couldnt sacrifice thier happiness for her own satisfaction.
She ran to her room and shut the door. She burried her face in a pillow and started venting out her sorrow. Why was this happening to her? She had done nothing wrong to deserve such sort of a torture. Why was Babaju doing this to her? She was in love with Maan, but he loved somebody else! She was now going to be trapped in a loveless marriage thanks to her over enthusiastic family and she couldnt help it. Her life had become a total mess, but enough was enough! She would talk to Maan and this time she would have her say, no matter what.
**************************
Khurana mansion was standing tall in all its glory. Relatives and guests were gathered to witness the wedding of the decade. The media was curious to know as to who was the girl who was successful in convincing Maan SIngh Khurana to get married.
Exquisite jwellery was lying on the bed and the girls just brought Geet inside the room after a rose water bath. They made her wear her lehanga and sat her in front of the mirror. After applying the required amount of make up, her mother came in and kissed her forehead with tears in her eyes. After that she adorned Geet with jwellery and put a black mark behind her ears.
Slowly Geet lifted her eyelids and looked at herself in the mirror. Many people had complimented her saying that the bridal glow was very evident in her face but she had just brushed it off. Today she could see that they were speaking the truth to some extent. Even though she never had a chance to talk to Maan as he had not yet arrived and she was very very nervous, there was an unnatural glow in her and she did not want to dwell on that.
Just then somebody came and announced that the rituals had begun and Geet was to be brought down. Geet felt butterflies in her stomach. She would be seeing him after so many days and that was enough to fill her with excitement.
When they brought her towards the mantap, she saw that the priest was chanting the rituals and Maan was sitting in front of the fire waiting for her.
Just then he looked up and thier eyes met. That was when magic happened. Geet felt herself going light. She didnt know what happened but her heart felt at peace. He smiled at her and her heart melted.
It was like the whole world had disappeared, leaving just Maan and her. Geet could see the holy fire magnified and reflected in Maan's eyes. Her heart started pounding as she sat beside him. He gently took her hand in his and the rituals began. Geet could feel nothing but Maan's hand in hers. Just the touch of him changed something inside her.
The priest instructed them to stand up for the holy rounds around the fire. As they took each round Geet's eyes filled with tears as she felt those 7 promises engraved in her heart. Maan slowly made her face him and filled her forehead with sindoor which claimed her to be his in front of the entire world. Next he adorned her neck with the black beads all the while looking into her eyes. She just closed her eyes relishing each moment.
Once the wedding was over, the newly wedded couple took thier elders blessings. Geet's heart cried when she saw tears in her father's eyes. Soon after the girls dragged Geet into a room while the reception started.
Geet was left alone to contemplate what had happened. The realization that she was married now hit her like a slap across the face. SHe was Geet Maan SIngh Khurana now. Just saying that name in her mind gave her the jitters. But she couldnt let herself live in illusion. She wouldn't let Maan sacrifice himself for her. She would do the necessary to undo the damage done. She would talk to Maan.
Just then Daadimaa and Annie came to take her towards the reception. Geet could only vaguely hear people congratulating her, while her eyes constantly searched for Maan.
What she saw next tore her heart into peices. There was Maan at a corner, hugging that female Garcia, a warm smile on his face. She turned her face, a pain piercing through her. Her eyes were blinded by tears.
Seeing that she had suddenly stopped, Daadimaa asked her if she was alright. Geet simply nodded and proceeded towards the stage. Soon after, Maan joined her with a smile but Geet did not respond. All the guests started crowding in on the stage, wishing the newly married couple happiness. Geet plastered a fake smile while Maan looked at her in concern and asked her if there was any problem. She just looked away and attended to the guests.
Vicky announced that the newly married couple were to have thier first dance but Geet insisted that she couldnt since she wasnt feeling too well. She saw the hurt across Maan's face when she refused, but she did not care. SHe wanted to put an end to this farce.
She excused herself and made her way upstairs. She ran into her room and fell on the bed crying. Just then she felt a hand on her head. She jerked up to see Maan staring at her.
"Geet, what happened? You are not yourself today! Please just tell me. I cant see you like this." Maan made her look at him.
The audacity of the man to ask her what happened when he so very well knew what was going on.
Geet pushed his hand away from her face.
"Do you really want to know what happened? I thought you would be wise enough to figure that out. After all you are Maan Singh Khurana. If you still did not get it, i will explain. I hate this marriage. I hate you." Geet screamed at him and let out her frustration.
"Geet, could you please listen to me? I wanted to say..."
"I have no interest in listening what you have to say. All i know is that you promised this marriage would not happen. I was counting on you. You spoiled everything for everybody. I hate you." Geet hit his chest while crying.
Maan pulled her to him aggressively. " What has gotten into you Geet? Has anybody told you anything? You were fine until we got married! Your behaviour changed during the reception. Just tell me your problem God dammit!"
"My problem is you. You seem to be in love with someone else, but are married to me. I did not want to be married but somehow i am married to you. Look Mr.Khurana. I am a simple girl. I dont like my life getting all complicated like this. " Geet told him with all the courage she could muster.
"So what are you hinting at?" Maan whispered furiously, his fingers digging into Geet's arm making her writhe in pain.
"Its simple. I want a divorce."
The moment Maan heard those words, he recoiled as if he was burnt. He walked out of the room without turning back once, and Geet was left with sobs racking her being.
