The Most Unromantic Romance: A FF
Part 7:
Khushi gave Arnav a punch on his shoulders saying, "What the--------As if I mind it! I did not say anything about the brake but you better be careful before you spout more of that rudeness to me!" successfully misbalancing both of them and guiding the bike towards its path of destruction to a big tree on the wayside.
Arnav glared at Khushi who got up now dusting both her hands and her jeans and kurti. This girl had been nothing short of a disaster ever since he had met her. Arnav asked, "How the hell are we going to get to Mr. Mehta's house? We have nearly five more kilometers to go. Not a taxi or bus is in sight. What do you propose to do? Do you have some kind of magic wand Miss Know-All?"
Khushi coolly replied, "Well! As you've already listed the possibilities, there's nothing else we can do but walk from here. I'll call my dad and tell him to send somebody here to take the bike and get it repaired. What's the time now, by the bye?"
Arnav looked at his watch and replied, "O shit! It's already five in the evening. My friend will be waiting for me, and here I'm stuck up with you. I'll call him up!" Arnav informed Akaash, "Hey, Aks, don't wait for me. I've been sent by my Professor on some official work. Di's coming to stay with us today. Tell her I'm sorry that I was not able to come home soon. Bye."
Khushi too looked worried. Payal would be waiting for her. She called her up, "Hello Payal! Prof. Mahajan has sent me on some work. I'll be late today. Hope you can manage on your own for today!"
Payal was standing beside Khushi's bike when she was accosted by Akaash who asked her, "Did you come to college today? I don't remember seeing you?"
Payal replied, "Yes of course! I was wearing skirt and tops just like you had suggested. Perhaps that's why you didn't observe me! I'm staying at my father's business associate's house as a guest, and aunty is pretty old-fashioned. So I changed back into my old clothes, jewels, and pom-poms in the girls' rest room. It was actually aunty's daughter, Khushi's idea. I was waiting for her but it seems she has work. So I'm on my own for today."
Akaash, very gallantly asked her, "Even my friend has deserted me at the last moment. I'm also all alone for today. Please can I have the honor of filling up your friend's void! May I drop you home?"
Payal smiled sweetly and silently acquiesced.
Both Arnav and Khushi had called up their respective friends and now was the time to think about the arduous task they had on their hands. They began walking. Khushi was in the fullest spirits completely unfazed by this disaster they had got themselves into. Arnav was cursing Khushi beneath his breath and dragging his feet along unwillingly.
Suddenly, the skies started filling up with dark rain clouds and the ominous roar of thunder punctuated by streaks of lightening. It had started raining and Arnav was at his wit's end. There was practically no kind of shelter under which both of them could duck and save themselves from getting wet. It was just the two of them under the open and pouring skies.
Khushi loved the rain. There was something magical in those drops of nectar dripping from the heavens. How everything on earth seemed to come alive rejuvenated by them. The smell of wet earth, flowers, plants and trees swaying to its tunes, and the multi-colored rainbow which appeared after the rain had subsided--------if at all there was life, colour and beauty on earth, it was this! Was there anybody immune to this sight fit for the gods?
Yes! There was! And that person was standing just beside Khushi. Arnav thanked his stars that the invitation which they were to give Mr. Mehta was with him. His bag was waterproof and safe from the rain. But what about his body? It was not water-proof. There was no way he could keep it from getting wet. And as if that was not enough, the crazy girl beside him was becoming even more crazier after it had started raining.
Khushi was dancing in the rain with uncontrollable delight and glee, spreading her arms and catching those drops of water in her hands. She started jumping from one puddle after the other on the way making a loud splash each time, and by that time rendering herself completely dirty and unpresentable to be even fit to be presented before Mr. Mehta, the Correspondent of their University.
Arnav tried to make her see light through this madness but she stopped him saying, "What does it matter? It's the first shower of this season. If not for this stupid invitation, I would be enjoying this moment with my dad at home. If not there, then at least here. And don't you like the rain? What kind of a person are you?"
Arnav was reminded of his own experience of the rain! His dad would sit in one corner of the room reading the newspaper while he would be sitting in the other corner reading his books. If it was raining, he would not be allowed to go out and play. It was bad for health. So he was told. He would be forced to stay at the house.
The whole rainy season would pass like that without any play and only study. What a dreary picture of those days he had. He hardly had any fun. Even the very little fun he usually had on ordinary days was not allowed to him during this season. In his mind, rain always stood for a dreary black and gloomy period which could never be happy.
Arnav's voice was choked with emotion as he asked Khushi, "But it's not good for health if you get wet? You might even get cold!!!"
Khushi replied, "So----what's the big deal! You'll get cold!!!!! ------In the bargain what do you miss ---------all this beauty which will give you the memories of a life-time. My dad used to say that a cold can be cured with medicines but a person whose heart cannot be warmed up by such a beautiful sight is really missing a lot in life. Happiness is much more than a mere cold!"
Arnav's fingers started loosening. Why not give this craziness a try? There was nobody beside him to rebuke or comment on him but this girl. As for this girl, he was least bothered about what she thought about him. He hated her! Yes! He hated her! Her views didn't matter to him!
Both of them went ahead, walking like a bunch of school kids trying to imprison the mighty rain in the fists of their hands, jumping for joy over every small puddle imagining as though one jump in it held the promise of immortality and eternal happiness.
On the way, they passed a vendor of ice golas who was shutting shop due to the rain. Normally people eat golas when it's hot to beat the heat. But Khushi was a unique specimen who ate them when it rained. She asked the man, "Bhaiyya sabhi colors, ek ek dena!"
Her hands and mouth full of dripping golas, Khushi explained to Arnav in an incoherent fashion, "I always eat them when it rains. I love eating these colorful pieces of ice shining like crystals when it's raining and continue eating them until it stops raining. Seeing the colorful and brilliant rainbow by the time these colorful golas have evaporated into juice with their sweet taste still lingering on my tongue is like the icing on the cake. Would you like to have one?"
Arnav replied, "No thanks! You have them. I eat only boiled vegetables and salads. I don't eat unhygienic outside stuff."
Khushi shrugged her shoulders. Why bother about a spoil-sport and wet towel like him! He did not mean anything to her! Arnav, though he refused the golas, felt that he had lived life to the fullest for the first time in life.
Arnav didn't know till that moment that happiness was so sweet and simple. He had to grudgingly accept whatever Khushi's dad had said about cold and happiness. He mentally sent a message to his own dad, not that it would ever be delivered to him, "Dad! You were wrong! This happiness is worth far more than a silly cold!"
His thoughts were broken by Khushi who was clapping her hands saying, "See the rainbow! There it is! Wow! So beautiful!"
