Chapter 24:
"And you are here because…" Geet trailed her eyes full of sleep and stifling a yawn. Maan was at her door and seven in the morning on a Sunday which also happened to be her off day.
"I woke up today morning and I realized that you and I haven't spent any quality time together." Maan said chirpily bringing his face a mere inch away from hers. Geet raised an eyebrow. "So let's go somewhere." Maan gave her a big grin. Maan's grin faltered when there was no reply from her.
Geet looked at him for a moment and promptly slammed the door shut on his face.
Maan's jaw dropped.
"Geeet." He knew he was whining like a three year old but he didn't care.
"I want to sleep Maan. Let's meet when its morning, alright?" Geet said from other side of the door, her voice already away from the door.
"Its seven in the morning darling," he shouted.
There was silence for several moments. He wondered if Geet was being serious and he had managed to piss her off this early in the morning.
"Morning as in three in the afternoon idiot," she replied breezily.
"Oh come on Geet don't be like this. Should I go to hospital, get myself admitted and proclaim an emergency stating that only my personal doctor can touch me?" Maan said still yelling through the door. He heard shuffling of feet from other side of the door which encouraged him a bit.
"Oohh…so we have a doctor-patient fantasy going on between us; you in your blue scrubs and I in hospital gown. And then there is the VIP suit with a comfy couch and soft bed," said Maan wickedly. "Didn't think you were of this type Geet," he chuckled. He could only imagine how red Geet would have turned; not from embarrassment but from anger. She hated when he casually passed on sexual innuendos when she was working.
"That image is quite disturbing," said a voice from the now opened door.
Maan's jaw dropped.
"Geet left minutes ago and I think it was sometime when you talked about doctor-patient fantasy," Maya said repressing her laughter. Maan flushed and tried to come up with a coherent response.
"Cool it handsome. I'll see if I can convince Geet to go out with you, alright?" Maya said kindly. Maan hadn't fully recovered to formulate a decent response. He simply nodded swallowing hard. Idiot.
Maan sat down and literally twiddle his thumbs waiting for Maya aunty to show up with or without demon-Geet. He knew it for a fact that she hated waking up early during off days and even when they were kids, Sunday mornings used to start somewhere around noon for her.
"Can you wait for thirty minutes?" Maya's voice came from hallway. Maan stood up automatically as soon as she walked into the living room.
"Of course, I will." Maan sighed in relief.
"I am sorry but you will have to tend to yourself till Geet comes. Actually Tara and I are headed for the airport," Maya said flustered at their predicament.
"Oh, please don't apologize Maya aunty. I will be fine." Maan replied.
"Actually I am more worried about you and Geet being here unsupervised," Nayantara said coming in. Maya flushed at her daughter's comment.
He might as well paint his face scarlet if he started letting every darn comment affect him. He cleared his throat hiding the nervousness of being in the same room as his potential life partner's mother and sister for the first time.
"We are what? Fifteen year olds?" Maan asked with his trademark blase indifference.
"Oh no, no, no; my sister is a responsible adult where as you – are an irresponsible little prick with no moral constraints who goes around and breaks hearts of poor women." Nayantara was pissed at him. He fathomed he deserved it for insulting her or passing sarcastic remarks whenever they met at a social gathering. She was sort of president or founder of his hate club; if there was one, that is.
"That is enough." Maya's voice was hard. Nayantara fumed at him and walked past without as much a spare glance at him or her mother as she walked past her.
"Sorry Maan but we should be really leaving now." Maya said and turned around to leave but faltered. "Don't break her heart again Maan," she said softly. Maan swallowed hard. "There won't be a next time," she said and disappeared in the hallway. Maan sat back on the sofa, Maya's voice ringing in his head.

"I am here. Now what?" Geet said announcing herself to Maan who was reading a magazine. He stood up at smiled wanly at her.
"We can go out for breakfast and then for a drive." He said.
"I don't like sun," said Geet flatly. Maan stared at her.
"Pardon?" Maan was sure if a mosquito was to fly into his mouth, he probably wouldn't notice it.
"Are you deaf? I said I don't like going out in sunshine," replied Geet irritated. He was kind of anticipating the annoyance and the irritation but really, who doesn't like sunshine? Was she serious?
"Seriously?" He didn't know why he asked the same thing again.
She merely shot him a death glare.
"No problem at all. We can entertain ourselves indoors," Maan replied hurriedly. "We can simply cuddle up right here," he said patting the sofa.
"I prefer no-physical contact." She said. Maan cursed his bad luck.
"We can sit and talk?" Maan didn't know he was asking or proposing a solution.
"We can use cellphones for that," she ensured that sarcasm didn't ooze out completely.
"How about we watch a movie?"
"I have migraine." Her answer was ready.
"How about I go home?" Maan asked, frustration creeping in.
"Please don't go," she said, again without missing a beat. Maan looked at her sharply. He sighed.
"You want to stay at home but you don't want to talk or come anywhere near me or want to indulge in any entertainment activity. Have I got it right?" Maan asked.
"Perfect." She replied serenely.
"Cook lunch," said Maan after moments of thinking.
"Eh?" She looked surprised. "At seven frigging in the morning?"
"Sure, why not?" Maan shrugged. Geet looked at him as if he had suddenly sprouted another arm or something.
"Fine. What do you want to eat?" She said walking towards kitchen.
He was taken aback at her sudden acceptance.
"You know my favorites," he said hoping she wouldn't make a big deal out of it.
"Whatever. But am not chopping any vegetables," she replied and continued her walk. He sighed in relief.
"I'll do that." He said allowing a goofy grin to take over his face.
As he cut vegetables at snail pace, he watched Geet performing various tasks around the kitchen and maintaining a casual conversation with him about weather, hospital, inflation, random music bands, odd facts etc. When they weren't talking, they worked in compatible silence without pressurizing themselves to talk something, anything. There wasn't any need for that.
She stuck a spoon in his mouth and raised an eyebrow non-verbally asking about the taste. He merely nodded in response, his heart hammering in his chest so loudly that he swore even she could hear it. She continued to buzz around the kitchen talking to him about something mundane when he realized that this was one of those moments which one would tell their kids and their grandchildren when they spoke of past and good memories. It would also become the memory that he would hold on to in future whenever he felt the suffocation that he usually felt in a relationship.
This memory, the one of many, would make him breathe deeper.
This realization was long time coming.
I love her.
To be continued.
