ALMOST LOVERS
Chapter 5
The other man
He may love you,
But you are the manifestations of my dreams
Both the darkest and purest of my desires
He may touch you,
But I run along with blood in your veins,
I am so deep within you, that you can never hide.
Present:
Rehan Parekh
From the very first instance Maan had heard that name he had felt anger and jealous. Nothing had changed, for even today the mere name of that man caused Maan's blood boil. Yet he was forced to be in his presence.
He could recall vividly the emotions of rage and incredulity when he had heard about Geet and Rehan's relationship. To say that he hadn't taken the news well would have been a major understatement. From that moment onwards Maan had known the difficulties he would face in being with Geet, but he had never predicated the resulting havoc they created.
He consoled himself with the fact that Geet was standing next to him and that she was lawfully his wife. Rehan couldn't change that no matter how hard he tried, for some things were irreversible.
Maan ki Geet and Geet ki Maan. That was how society looked upon their relationship, and that was how he saw their relationship.
Even at this party Rehan might have the right to dance and stare at Geet, but he was the one who could hold her hand and the one whose hand she would hold. Everyone at the party would connect Maan and Geet together, while Rehan would be in the peripheries.
He tried not to ponder on how Geet saw their situation, for thoughts of that would hardly brighter his darkened mood. Yet that was the crux of the issue. Because the truth was that society didn't matter and in the most practical sense Rehan didn't matter either.
The person who did matter was the one for whom he had battled against himself and the world to gain. Her opinion mattered more than any other and what she felt was the main contention.
It had always been about her...it was about her today and it had been about her from the very first moment.

Flashback:
Her boyfriend.
Those words brought out in him almost uncontrollable rage. Somehow he had managed to tamp it down while at the party, even though every instinct urged him to run after her and stop her from meeting her so called boyfriend.
However now in the haven of his home, he let the anger flow out as his fists started pounding his punching bag. Blood was dripping from his knuckles but all he could concentrate on was the concept of his Geet being with someone else.
Yes, she had become his within the two times he had seen her. For two meetings was all it took for him to recognise that she was made for him.
Speaking to her today confirmed what he had felt when he saw her first. The way she spoke, her view points and even her smile set her apart from anyone else. No other woman had come even an inch close to making him feel that way.
They were kindred spirits; even in the middle of a crowd they would stand out as unique. They were both confident souls, who would not bend to the rules society tried to push upon them. From their conversation he knew that she also saw the world the same way as he did, albeit she did so in a much more calm and understanding way. He knew that she would understand him in a way that no else could.
A part of him realised that it was ridiculous and not logical to fall for someone in such a short time but logic had no place in such matters. It was as if his heart and soul had decided on a path and nothing he could do would persuade them to change course.
And why should I? She is everything I could ever hope for...and much more.
He had been in such peace while conversing with her that he had let his guard down, assuming that she felt the same way. The last thing that he had expected was for her to have a boyfriend and for her to proclaim the fact in such an open manner.
But it doesn't matter whether she has a boyfriend. Because I won't let anyone come between us. No one can stop me from getting to her.
Maan Singh Khurana shoved his conscience aside, for at that moment all he could think about was how to get to her and make sure that no else stood a chance. Not even her boyfriend.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Geet couldn't help but sigh as she stared at her prince charming. There would be many who would argue that he couldn't be her prince charming for he wasn't rich, neither was she a poor maid. He might not be the most handsome or dashing guy but he was hers. None of those facts mattered to her when she was with him.
Everything with Rehan was comfortable. There was no challenge neither was there any friction between them. They were like two peas in a pod, both knowing every detail about the other.
"How was your trip?" She asked him while leaning against his shoulder. Both were sitting outside the Handa mansion, in the rose garden. This was their place, for this is where they first they met and nearly every important moment they shared happened here. It was at this very place that they expressed their love and turned their relationship into something new.
Rehan brushed his hand across her hair in a habitual action. "Not good Geet...things aren't working out the way I planned."
Geet picked up his hand and pressed her lips against them in a gesture filled with not only love but care. "Things will work out Rehan."
"You deserve better than me." He murmured against her hair. "You deserve the best. I worry at moments that I'll never be worthy of you. That I'll never become that man you'll need me to be."
"Enough of that!" Geet protested. "I don't want to hear any of those self-deprecating comments. Firstly tell me why you couldn't make it to the party."
"Well apart from the fact that I can't stand any of those snobs? Or the fact that they probably wouldn't even notice me." He taunted Geet.
"Are you calling me a snob? Because it sure sounds like you are!" Geet retorted angrily.
"Sorry Geetu! Don't take it like that, you know that you aren't a snob." He tried calming her down. "You couldn't be one even if you tried. Anyways did anything exciting happen at there?"
Quickly forgetting her anger, Geet started to talk excitedly. "Oh you wouldn't believe who I hung out with. Maan Singh Khurana!"
"Really? Maan Singh Khurana?" Everyone knew about the Khurana Wonderboy, who had managed to increase the already enormous Khurana fortune and had won nearly all business accolades. Rehan had been impressed by the tenacity and incredible foresight of Maan's in handling the Khurana business. "How was he?"
"We talked and talked for so long! I am sure I bored him with my incessant chat, but it was nice talking to someone that intelligent and surprisingly we shared quite similar interests. Not something I expected."
Rehan rolled his eyes at her. "Geet I am sure he wasn't bored. You've never bored anyone, so I don't think he would be an exception."
"He is not at all like how I thought he would be. There is something about him that sets him apart from everyone else. A bit of raw charisma...a sort of hidden charm and power that seems to draw everyone to him. I have to say he is every bit handsome as he is described, possibly even more." Geet giggled as she said this.
Geet truly had felt this way about Maan. She usually wasn't overly impressed with people, but Maan Singh Khurana was special. She had known that he was unique from the start of their conversation but she also felt he was someone she could relate to. She had been truly surprised by how easy it had been to connect with him.
Rehan smirked and pulled her closer. "Miss Handa, should I be jealous? So much praise for a stranger sounds awfully suspicious to me."
"Hmmm...I don't know Mr Parekh. He is rather attractive. Maybe if you weren't in the picture, something could have happened between the two of us."
"Well in that case I better make sure that I am always in the picture." He bent down and ever so gently brushed his lips across hers.
Geet sighed in content.
I hope you always stay with me as well.

Present
As she stood in the party, watching both the men she couldn't help but appreciate the irony of life. She had grown up with Rehan, they had gone through nearly all the milestones of life together and had shared each other's secrets. Yet there were facets to him that she still didn't know. While Maan and her had known each other for a much shorter time but she knew intimate details about him.
There were certain things you learnt about a man only after you marry him. Geet knew what Maan looked like in the early hours of the morning and how his voice sounded when he was just about to go to sleep. She knew what shampoo he used and she could recognise the smell of his musky cologne before anyone else.
She could guess from the way her husband's jaw was set and the sharp line of his lips that he was analysing the situation in front of him and trying to think of a way to salvage the chaos. For Maan Singh Khurana despised chaos, he needed to be in control of all situations. The concept of accepting the inevitable was alien to him.
"Dance with me." There was steel in the words, indicating that she couldn't refuse.
But Geet knew him too well to be flustered. "Of course."
