I don't think Kastur's family would ever say 'pay back the money' if you're not going to marry Kastur as Baapji is saying. Sure they may very well expect the money back, but there's no way they would ever agree to go on with the marriage if they found out Mohan is choosing between having to pay back the money or marry Kastur.
Her family would probably just say, yeah we're calling this off--pay us back as you can. Even if you want to marry her now, how can we be sure that it's not simply not to pay back the loan.
Pradeep was a very good and sweet brother in what he did. I smiled when I saw the papers. It was not meant in any malicious or manipulative way, as everyone here agrees. But that gesture itself says how much they value Kastur and respect Kastur (even if Pradeep made a comment on her leaving her studies).
