I feel it's no coincidence that while cleaning the room a while ago, I stumbled upon a cute little chart of tables our class teacher back in standard V had made us sketch, saying "Read Me Twice Everyday". The ma'am I speak of had a particularly notorious reputation among the students for being exceptionally strict and liberal with the cane. So when we entered the class for the first time, I still remember the pin-drop silence as though we had entered the den of a lion.
It was only as the days progressed that I realized she had a heart of gold and only handed out punishment when it truly was justified. I once failed to do my science homework despite having a week to complete it and I recall the magnificent slap she handed me in front of everyone. 😛 I was then detained and made to do the entire homework ten times before going home. I was obviously very upset, but once I was finished, she spoke to me and made me realize why I had received the punishment, and made me realize my mistake. She actually hugged me after that and invited my entire family to her home, cooking wonderful food herself. I never left my work unfinished after that.
She left the school shortly after that, and a few years later we came to know that she had expired from a terrible disease. As much of a shock as it was, I can never forget what she taught me and the chart I mentioned served to rekindle those memories once again. God bless her soul.
