Chapter 3 - Just The Beginning

Geet had to blink several times to process what she was seeing.

As soon as she stepped into the house, she was taken aback. It was grand & lavish, the walls a creamy colour. It was delightfully warm inside.

A huge double staircase rested at the back of the entrance hall with an extragavant chandelier hanging off the gold bordered ceiling.

The plump lady appeared from one of the rooms, her apron now removed & smiled at Geet's reaction.

"I can see you are taken aback with the interior, Miss Geet."

"It's beautiful," she whispered.

"It is a pleasure for the eye to behold indeed, but for now we must get you warmed up before you catch a cold. I have had one of the servants to run you a hot bath."

The lady led Geet up the stairs, & down the right corridor. She stopped when she reached the last room on the corridor.

"This is the bathroom," she explained. "I have arranged a towel & nightgown for you, it is all in there."

"Nightgown? But-"

"Please, Miss Geet. It is a very harsh winter's night, I cannot allow you to leave in that awful weather."

"The rider-"

"I do not see why Sir should have a problem. You saved him. Now please, do not fret. The door is attached with a lock from the inside, so you are safe. When you are finished, the 2nd room on the left corridor is yours to stay in for the night."

Without giving Geet a chance to protest, the lady walked away.

Geet sighed, clutching her fists together, then reluctantly opened the door.

Even the bathroom was beautiful. A crisp white suite, delightfully clean, & very warm.

She gaped, then closed the door & bolted it shut. She did not want to seem selfish by enjoying the luxury of the bathroom, so Geet decided to get her bath done quickly then leave & slip into the room quietly, where she could hide out until the next morning. As soon as dawn rose, she would be gone.

She washed herself hurriedly with hot water & the rose scented soap, then slipped out & dried herself off before putting on the nightgown, which was too big for her small figure. The arms hung off her & the length went beyond her ankles.

Tying her wet hair back loosely with one of her elastic bands, Geet clutched the towel as she walked out of the bathroom. She proceeded to tiptoe across the balcony to the left corridor.

Reaching room number 2, she placed a hand to twist the doorknob & realised it was locked.

She rattled the wooden door, then realised she might wake everyone else up so hitching her awfully long gown up, Geet crept downstairs, the towel held tightly to her chest.

Geet walked along the entrance hall when she stopped short outside of a room. She heard the familiar voice of the plump lady & hid against the wall so she would not be seen.

"... We need somebody to fill in the post."

"I do not want anyone looking after her."

"She needs the love & attention, Maan sir."

Maan, the name rolled off Geet's tongue in a whisper.

"I appreciate your advice, Madhuri but I think I know what is best for-"

Maan thought he saw something white from the corner of his eye. His attention turned to the door as he then heard the sound of shuffling.

He walked towards the door & turned to his right. No one in sight.

But when he turned to his left, he heard a gasp & then her eyes widened in shock.

It's the rider, Geet thought as she stared at him in utter surprise.

Geet was staring back at him with her honey brown eyes, her lips formed into a small O as she clutched the towel tighter with panic.

For a moment, it seemed as if the world stopped when she looked into his eyes. A thousand words, endless stories & raw emotions reflected in them as she stared back at him with nothing but innocence.

She looked down at the floor quickly, allowing Maan to observe her face.

Her cheeks were now a light tint of pink, due to the hot bath she had had. Her brown, curly hair was in a wet slump across her shoulders, with a few strands lingering on her face.

Her pale, creamy complexion looked perfect, almost too perfect.

And her lips-

"Miss Geet, is there a problem?" Madhuri appeared, looking confused.

Maan snapped out of his trance & stepped back, folding his arms to regain some composure.

"The door was locked," Geet said softly, her eyes still downcast.

"Oh dear, I must have forgotten to open it for you. Come, we'll unlock it now."

Madhuri walked off towards the stairs with Geet following closely behind. She did not dare to turn back, for she had a feeling someone's gaze was penetrating onto her back.

The following morning, Geet woke up feeling revitalised & refreshed.

It was the best night's sleep she had had in years.

But as her eyes adjusted to the brightness, she realised it was too bright for it to be dawn.

She shot up in bed as her eyes travelled to the clock on the white wall across her which read 8am.

"Oh Lord, I was supposed to leave hours ago!" she cried to herself.

Geet swung her legs over the bed when Madhuri walked in, carrying a tray of food.

"Miss Geet, is there something wrong?" she asked, reading Geet's worried expression.

"I really should be going," she explained.

"You must have breakfast first."

"There is no need."

"I insist."

Madhuri placed the tray down on a small table in the far corner of the room which had 2 chairs on either side of it. Geet walked over to the table, sat down & reluctantly picked at the food.

"I have a proposition."

Geet looked up. "Proposition?"

"An offer, if you like. Which will benefit everyone enormously."

Madhuri took Geet's silence as an indication to continue.

"A small girl of about 8 years resides in the house. She is called Amelia. Amelia is mentally challenged. She needs constant care & attention. Her former nanny left the job after giving birth to her own child. For about 2 months now, we have been struggling to cope. We were in the market for a new nanny. We still are. Would you consider taking up the job?"

Geet was shocked. A job as a nanny? She did not have much experience with children, which she felt was neccessary to highlight.

"I do not have much experience with children."

"Amelia is a delightful child. You would be required to live here. Your food & basic living essentials would be provided by the house. This would be your home & your workplace."

She felt out of her depth with the offer. It somehow did not feel right, for her to be enjoying another man's hard earned luxuries.

Madhuri saw Geet's hesistance & was keen for her to remain in the house, so she spoke further.

"I strongly advise you take up the position. You need it."

If she took up the job, she would not have to worry about money, food, clothing. She would not have to worry about how to get by.
It was looking extremely appealing. Although not an ideal choice for her, Geet knew admittedly that the job was offering her everything she needed.
And Maan... Maan sir... she could easily stay out of his way.

Madhuri got up, wiped her hands on her apron to leave when Geet suddenly spoke.

"I'll accept the offer."

Madhuri turned around & beamed, whilst Geet returned the gesture with a small smile before looking away.

Okay I'll start now :D

Umm I've read Jane Eyre, so I know where the story's heading but still, I love it! :)

Your writing is simplistic yet entertaining :D I love Maan-Geet's relationship in the last chapter, the flirting was cute ;)

Amelia makes for an interesting read, she's adorable! :)

There's a lot more I want to say, but homework calls 🤔

And you can expect me to be a regular reader, just not a regular comment-er ...although I shall definitely drop in with a line or two after updates :) <3
