Firstly, every individual has their own set of superstitions, even if they don't follow any such superstitions, they have to do it for the sake of the family at least.

Anyway, I don't believe her marrying a tree crap. It seems very well made up by the media... as now-a-days they are more into producing news than just reporting news!

An educated family like the Bachchan Parivaar- and they make their Bahu (well, hone wali at the time) to marry a tree. I respect all customs and traditions but this is in my opinion is terrible. They shouldn't have done that.
Then again, they are smart people. It was a banana tree after all. And as they say, sabar ka phal meetha hota hai 😆
