Review: Stanley Ka Dabba
(Social / Drama / Children)
Anupama Chopra, Consulting Editor, Films, NDTV
Saturday, May 14, 2011

Print A+ A-

Cast: Divya Dutta, Divya Jagdale, Raj Zutshi, Amole Gupte, Partho
Director: Amol Gupte

Stanley ka Dabba is about a boy named Stanley who actually doesn't have a dabba. So during the school break, he dips into the tiffin boxes of his many friends. But this irks the Hindi teacher Verma, played by director Amol Gupte, who forbids Stanley from coming to school without food.

Verma does this because he himself is a sweaty glutton who devours everything in sight. But Stanley and his friends successfully outwit their teacher.

Through this slim story, Gupte creates a poignant and piercing portrait of childhood and school days: the bond between friends, the bond children have with teachers, how swiftly and cruelly a child's imagination can be crushed and how casually brutal adults can be.

Gupte is wonderful as the constantly eating, almost repellent Verma but the true magic here is the children. Their innocence and bewilderment about the adult world is heart-breaking. Partho, Gupte's enormously talented son, doesn't hit an artificial note through the film.

Let me warn you that Stanley Ka Dabba is slow. In places, the story seems stretched. The climax is predictable and not entirely convincing. But I recommend that you make time for the film. It has an inherent sweetness and honesty that will stay with you long after the film is over.

Politicos find Stanley Ka Dabba yummy!

Delhi CM Sheila Dixit and Maharashtra CM, Prithviraj Chavan's wife, educationist Satvasheel Chavan have adopted the film, will push for entertainemnt tax exemption for it in both states

Enthralled by Partho's performance at the screening of Amole Gupte's Stanley Ka Dabba on Tuesday evening, Delhi chief minister, Ms Sheila Dixit displayed all her maternal instincts surprising everyone around.

She sat little Partho on her lap while she warmed up to his performance on screen amidst 1000 media persons and politicians at Delhi's Films Division theatre.

Right after the screening, the proud father Amole Gupte said, "It was very heartwarming. Sheilaji wouldn't let Partho out of her sight. I don't think she has sat through too many films. She watched Stanley Ka Dabba to the end." Ms Dixit was so impressed that apparently, she has assured Gupte that she would look into the matter to get the film a tax exemption.

As she clutches little Partho, Sheila Dixit beams with affection (l); educationist Satvasheel Chavan (r)

In a similar story, Maharashtra chief-minister Prithviraj Chavan's educationist-wife Satvasheela Chavan, too has taken note of the film's immense empathy towards the cause of child education and juvenile labour.

An entertainment-tax exemption for Stanley Ka Dabba in Delhi and Maharashtra is imminent and likely to happen within a week.

Says Amole, "We're very fortunate to have received such incredibly generous reviews. The word-of-mouth has also been good and our film is growing in its reach. The Maharashtra CM's wife has kindly embraced the film. In Delhi, Sheilaji has shown a keen interest in our little film.

The important thing is to let the film grow and not allow ourselves to get carried away into believing we've done something extraordinary."

With so much adulation and hype surrounding the film, father Amole Gupte makes it a point that Partho remains unaffected by the praise and remains as grounded as possible. He hasn't even been allowed to read the reviews!

Like father like son. Partho too seems to be untouched by the limelight around him. Partho says modestly, "She (Sheila Dixit) really liked the film and my performance and encouraged me a lot.

I don't know if people have really liked me that much. No one has told me anything. I think my performance could have been much better."

Kudos to this father-son team!
