This weeks quote:
"It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it." - Joseph Joubert
ok..hmm..my interpretation of this would be..
Debate is usually a kind of argument between two individuals. Debate is a way to express your views and to discuss issues without insulting anyone, we usually become biased with our thoughts and only express things in one way-the way that we think. Usually debates end up in arguements and that's what Joseph Joubert meant when he said: "It is better to debate a question without settling it, than to settle a question without debating it." I also think that even though you don't settle it, you then get a two way view of the arguement, the pros and the cons, you get an idea about what is right and what is wrong. Usually, by the end of the debate, we are clear about our point of view and the opponents point of view. So, we kind of know who is right and who is wrong. It doesn't matter as much if you don't settle the debate and if you are not right, it matters more that you have showed your point of view and have been able to understand others and the point that they are trying to get across. Unless we make an effort to show our views then we will be carrying on the misconceptions that we have that may not be true. Badically, to sum it up, we experience new stuff and we observe new things. Nothing is pure easy simple logic and we don't think of it automatically..we usually get our own way and we just settle the Q saying that we are right, although it is not neccessary. Without knowing why you were right or why you were wrong, you can't draw yourself to a conclusion.
If you've debated the Q without settling it then you've increased your knowledge, if you've settled the Q without debating it then you'll never really know why you were right/wrong.
ok..i don't think i made any sense there and i think i went soo off-point😳😕
