Actually, Mridang told Gau that even if she cannot think about the well being of other people, she should consider the well being of herself. So I think Mridang genuinely wanted to help Bharti, but while he realized the trouble they'd be as well, he used that only to persuade Gau, not b'cos he himself wanted out of trouble.

I think after all the embarrassments he's seen Gau put him thru - the last of which was his having her bhang drink and making a fool of himself due to her schemes, he's had it. In fact, he told Gau that from now on, she was to stop thinking or talking, and simply do what she's told. I laud him on that - Gau is just the sorta wife to keep underfoot.
