Emraan Hashmi: "I was kissed by a guy"
Emraan Hashmi talks of all that's good, bad and naughty about him. Filmfare is surprised by his candour
What was the naughtiest thing you did as a child?
Once my friends and I set the backyard ablaze. We put kerosene on dry leaves to get rid of them and make a tennis court. I put the blame on my friends. I could get away with it because I had an innocent face.
If not an actor, what would you have been?
As a kid I wanted to be a carpenter and then a pilot.
What was your first salary?
I was seven when I did a mosquito repellant ad for TV. I was paid Rs. 2500 for it. The amount was put in the bank.
Your top three films...
Gangster for the twist in my character, Jannat because I loved playing the wild character who was doomed and OUATIM for redefining gangster films.
Do you enjoy your reputation of being a serial kisser?
I don't enjoy it anymore. I'm just amused by it.
What are those stones that you are wearing?
It's a yellow sapphire and coral. My family believes in astrology. I find it thrilling to know the future.
The wildest party you've attended...
It was in mid December some six years ago. It went on for 48 hours. We danced and we slept and we danced and we slept. We had tented out on the beach.
A crazy fan experience…
The hysteria gets 'better' when out of Mumbai. I enjoy the adulation. They blow kisses and all. In Dubai I had a stalker, who'd come up to my floor and ring the bell every morning at 9 am. I'd be shooting all night and would be resting then. So it would get very troublesome. The authorities asked her to leave one day. Somehow she sneaked in again and put on the fire alarm to wake me up. I saw her running away after doing that!
What made you choose Parveen (Shahani) as your life partner?
Her simplicity and not wanting to be connected with the industry. I found that very refreshing.
What's the most memorable time you've spent with her?
It was last year in the Maldives before Ayaan was born. It was off season and so there were hardly six to seven families on the entire island. We lived in a water villa in a lagoon. We'd wake up to the sound of the sea. There was a ladder to the swimming pool. We'd have our breakfast, put on our snorkeling gear and get into the water. I like any place that's close to the sea though I'm not much of a swimmer.
When was the last time you did something special for her?
I took her out yesterday for our anniversary; we completed four years of marriage.
As a father, what do you enjoy doing?
I'm not a hands-on father. I'm still learning to change diapers. But I do enjoy playing with Ayaan. He's six months old now and recognises me. He cries when I leave and is happy and excited on seeing me return. It's the best thing to experience.
What do you find attractive in a woman?
Simplicity, a sense of humour and her ability to laugh at herself.
