Part 5: Importance of being earnest
"Boss IIT Campus" He asked the auto driver lazing on the handle bar.
"Illapa...savari varathu (No...I'm out of service)" The auto driver grumbled in his groggy state. Maan knew he will just have to speak his language and so he pulled a 500 rupee note and waved in front of the driver, pleading him "Urgent boss...hmmm"
He tried to recollect a few words he had picked up from his stay here hoping to convey his emergency, which were quite limited to Ponnu(Girl), Kutti(Hindi quivalent of Maal), idli vendam (no idli), Tamil theriyathu (I don't know Tamil).
"Ponnu..." and gestured his hands to show him that he was getting married. The driver looked perplexed at first and tried deciphering his actions.
"Arey...ennapa...kadal vishiyam nu munadiye sollakudatha?" (Could't you tell me before it's the case of your love interest?). He gestured Maan to get in.
"Thanks..." He said as he perched on the torn thin cushion and bent forward in anxiety to direct the driver.
"Thanks allam venampa...Namma thalaivar ethana pera sethu vechi irukuraru theriyuma (No need to thank me'My hero has brought together many such jodis)" He said looking at the insane number of Rajini pictures he had on either sides of his windshield.
Well, he didn't know what the driver had meant exactly, but the jist of it was clear as he saw the driver drown in his act of hero worship.
There was no clarity in him as guilt surged inside his tense being. He had done it to her, make her consider running away but the pain over, loosing her yet again was overtaking him slowly. He wondered if it really had been love...but the thought sounded irrational to his cogent mind. Can one fall in love when there had always been at least 15 feet between the two? He needed more theorems and proof that the gnawing feeling inside him was love and not care, concern, self-condemnation over scaring the shit out of her. In short, he needed something that told him Maan + Geet = Love and Passion. Dream on Puttar.
He didn't know what awaited him, as he caught sight of the lengthy campus wall that was approaching. The entrance was still some 50 meters away, but the possibilities were multiplying like binary fission inside his head. Her father could have an heart attack, or for that matter her mother too and as the eerie thoughts gathered momentum, it was now tracing its way towards the shame he would cause to her family, then his family...and had ended up imagining some wamp he would have to marry in her place.
But suddenly as the light filtered in his dazed state and reached his numb brain to make sense of the blurry image that was forming in his head, all the notions seemed to be quickly bursting as bubbles on a hot day (Apparently the time period a bubble took to collapse was shorter as the air surrounding the film got warmer). Geez...seriously?
She was hailing the same auto he was in as she put out her hand in front and moved it up and down restlessly, right at the entrance.
Maan felt the situation could not get weirder and at the sight of her it all got clearer to him. Not stopping for her would only have her go for another mode of transportation and so he asked the driver to stop for her. The driver was puzzled and his confusion grew, when Maan reached for his winter cap in the front and dragged it down his own face.
"Auto varuma...(Is this auto available?)" she asked, but just as she sighted a lanky fellow in the back seat, she backed off instantly. The stranger almost seemed to be in uniform for veerappan or LTTE gang for he had t-shit, jean, a winter cap and goggles in the middle of the night.
"Where are you going?...we can drop you" Maan asked. The driver turned to look at him as he mumbled something in tamil. Wasn't this dude supposed to get off here?, the driver thought.
"No No...I'm fine I will take another auto" She said as she looked out for an auto in the number of head lights that were scantily coursing the road.
"I'm an ex IIT if its any relief. You are not going to get another auto at this time" He tried not to be persistent, but it didn't come out as best as he intended.
She ignored him and walked a bit further.
"Two quantities are in golden ratio if the ratio of the sum of the quantities to the larger quantity is equal to the ratio of the larger quantity to the smaller one" He screamed at her as he inched to the edge of the seat and leaned his torso outside, to be heard. The driver scratched his oily hair as he looked back and forth between the two.
Geet shot a glance towards the man who had just given proof he was geeky enough, but she was still not convinced. Although before she could make certain she was not going to be raped or murdered by the sinister looking occupants of the vehicle, she had to take him up on his offer. She had just spotted someone coming on a motorcycle towards the entrance and it could have very well been a search party, set up by her father and so she hopped on and asked the driver to speed away.
"So was that nerd enough or do you want my IQ and GPA too?" He asked, not knowing how to break the silence.
"Well as long as you are not a psycho nerd who is out on a killing spree like in that kamal movie" she said. He smiled as he thought of all the kollywood influence on her.
"Anyways why play good Samaritan to me? You could have gone where ever it is you were going" she asked unable to contain her curiosity as the driver stared at Maan through the rear view mirror. Catching on to the cold gaze, he turned away to answer her question.
"It's midnight...I just thought it was not safe for you to wait on the road...so where should we drop you?"
"Oh!" She said as she paused a brief second and answered "Airport".
"Airport?" He asked to make sure he had heard it right and wondering where she was rather flying instead of running away.
She simply nodded.
The silence continued for about another 10 mts while Maan tortured himself on how to prod her on her further plans for the night. He struggled internally to come right out with the truth and convince her to get back home. But something held him back and told him it was more fun this way. Besides he was lost in her; it was a dream come true for him to be sitting next to her at this distance. He played to ignore her until he had charted out how to loop though the conversation that he was to start soon.
"So what's the story? No luggage...but just handbag and all the nervousness"
She pondered momentarily if she should tell him the truth and then said, "I have to pick up someone at the airport"
"Oh! Really now...sure you are not running away from home? A marriage perhaps?" Her eyes grew wide in surprise at Maan's words. He was now getting personal and she hated it.
"I don't think it concerns you...if you definitely need an answer I can get another auto"
She said, sharply turning away to the other side. Maan was starting to enjoy it.
"Sorry I just wanted to help...because..." He dragged on and then continued to add, "I'm running away" he said.
