GUWAHATI, April 17 – Legendary singer and musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika was admitted to a city hospital following a cerebral stroke late last night while he was performing at a Bihu function at Noonmati. The condition of octogenarian Dr Hazarika, who is currently at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital, was stated to be "not out of danger" though it has not deteriorated either.
"Dr Hazarika was admitted here at 2 am after he had suffered a mild cerebral stroke. In the past 12 hours his condition has not deteriorated but he is not out of danger as yet," Dr NC Borah, the chairman-cum-managing director of GNRC told newsmen in the this evening.
Revealing that Dr Hazarika was suffering from some heart-related disorders as well, Dr Borah said that it would take a few days more to declare him out of danger. "The good thing is that Dr Hazarika is responding to the treatment," he said, adding that he had also been able to mutter a few words.
Dr Hazarika had collapsed while singing at a function at Noonmati late last night, necessitating his admission into the Refinery Hospital immediately. This happened well after 12 midnight. The uneasiness and fatigue that the singer was suffering from was evident for the audience at the venue as also for those who were watching the programme live on TV. He was finding it very difficult to sing and finally could not take the stress any more.
Incidentally, it was Dr Hazarika's first Bihu function in the city this year, and was scheduled to sing at several other functions today, both in the city and outside.
Dr Hazarika has been kept on a liquid diet at the GNRC. "We have put him on intra-venous fluid," Dr Borah said.
Asserting that the hospital was doing everything possible to provide Dr Hazarika the best possible treatment, Dr Borah said that there was every chance that he would be able to perform again once he recovers. "Of course, at least for a couple of weeks, he will be out of the scene. But after he makes a recovery, he should be able to perform again," he said.
On the recovery incidence of persons over 80 years of age who suffer stroke, Dr Borah said that 40 per cent of such persons make a complete recovery. "We have got all his past treatment records and providing treatment accordingly. He does not have any stroke-related cases in the past," he added.
A team of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), including its adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya and president Sankar Prasad Roy, is also at the GNRC, which has been witnessing visits by a large number of fans and well-wishers of Dr Hazarika. Prominent among those who visited Dr Hazarika today were Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, AGP leader Birendra Prasad Baishya, film director and close friend Kalpana Lajmi.
