well, women do watch lots of drama but usually women have alot of trouble in this society. That's why dramas are based on them.

yea, you said it right....apples with rabbits...coz explaining the ratios to you,I would forget my maths.

ok let me wave the white flag here.. agree to disagree on our 'ratios' 😃 😃

The only point I am trying to highlight is that most of the times women have the tv on, but that hardly classifies as classic entertainment time. I have the tv on for hours because I like the noise and like somethign to glance at once in while when I am busy with work around the home.

Well in Indian TV women are the prime target audience and channels chief's have acknowledged it. The serials are therefore built around what they relate to marriage, children, in-laws. Nearly all serials have their focus on these themes.

I wld quote "The Indian audience is family oriented, and many of the viewers are women. (https://www.agencyfaqs.com/news/stories/2001/09/19/3259.html)

Also from Hindubusiness newspaper(online)

But why is the woman the pivot in the tale?

When Catalyst spoke to a cross-section of channels, producers, advertising agencies and media-buying agencies, it found out why the Mami was the most sought after viewer:

  • She spends the maximum time watching television
  • In the case of TV-with-remote households, the housewife still reigns supreme. "She controls the remote and, therefore, she is the target of our programming," says Hansraj W. Saxena, Vice-President, Programming, Sun TV

But then, why aren't men targets of programming? What do they watch?

Marketers believe that the Chief Wage Earner (the husband) does not really have a say in the choice of channels. He often abides by what the woman decides - the channel and the time band.

For health related reading:

New research suggests that elderly women who watch daytime soap operas and talk shows are more likely to suffer from cognitive impairment than women who abstain from such fare. https://www.forbes.com/execpicks/health/feeds/hscout/2006/03/ 20/hscout531620.html

Regd the argument that the TV is switched on and women are busy with their work, well that is not being considered since they are not watching it. Only active watching is being taken into account.😊

Likewise men doze off while watching sports or news or may be dreaming!😆

Also the TV is the acceptable means of entertainment for women in India.

Men can play games, movies, swimming ,spend time at paan shops etc or simply loiter arnd.😆

Interesting article . Now we have a reason why women spend more time in front of the T.V. Its because they have limited choices in India. "Loitering around" by the female and doing more independant out door activities is any ways not very acceptable for a conservative middle class girl . "Papa ji says :" beta ji after school ...........straight home and NO where else" Same goes for the mom's too ............."aap ghar dekhiye ji"!!😛

Thanks Aparna. Even working women need to come back home straight after work, single or married notwithstanding.

The advertisements also target women and they are mostly household utilities.

The afternoon programming has been redefined on TV for women viewers specially. Even in the prime time band 8 pm tp 11pm has all woman/women protagonist/s & women related themes.

{Pl note I am talking about India.}
