Well, it's easy.
Champa's Father has a small plot of land which has been illegally wrested from him by his late elder brother's family, which comprises of his elder sister in law, nephew and the nephew's wife. These people are in good terms with the Thakur and his family and all are eyeing the land. Mangroo is trying to obtain back his land through legal means, so that he can give up being a boatman and becoming a farmer instead, by tilling and cultivating his own land.Obviously, his nephew and the Thakurs are against his intention and are doing everything possible to wreak havoc in Mangroo's family. THis they succeed finally by destroying Champa's marriage. They are not against Champa per se, as an individual, but against the whole family so that by hook or by crook, they get the land under their control.Hope this helps.
I think we are wishing for too much.
