Youth held for nuisance on Facebook

Staff Correspondent, Ctg

A young engineer was arrested yesterday for harassing a female university student on the social networking site Facebook.

Arrested Aleem Uddin, 28, an assistant engineer of Western Marine Shipyard in Chittagong, hails from Noakhali.

Police said Aleem had opened a fake account of the victim, whom he termed his former girlfriend, on the networking site two months back.

He started posting indecent pictures and abusive words using the profile.

Getting verbal complaints from the victim a few days back, Kotwali police started tracing the fake account and other accounts of Aleem and his friends on the Facebook. The crime busters found the allegations to be true.

On receiving a written complaint from the victim on Sunday, a team from Kotwali Police Station raided Lalkhan Bazar crossing in the port city and arrested Aleem yesterday around 1:00am.

The girl, a Chittagong University student, filed a case with Kotwali Police Station accusing Aleem under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and ICT Act yesterday morning.

Aleem confessed to the offence while talking to The Daily Star yesterday at the police station.

He said he had wanted to take revenge on her girlfriend who broke up their 12-year-long affair on January 4 this year and developed a relation with another man.

Aleem claimed he had been in love with the girl since he was a student of class IX and they lived in the same area of Noakhali.

He admitted opening the Facebook account by using a fake email ID two months back.

The victim told The Daily Star they had known each other and developed a friendship. But she avoided Aleem after he started making indecent proposals several years back.

Quoting the young girl, Sub Inspector Sadip Kumar Das of Kotwali Police Station said Aleem had physically assaulted her on September 20 and took away her mobile phone set.

Police recovered the phone set from Aleem's possession, he added.

SI Sadip said they found the victim's name, address, mobile phone number, several obscene pictures on the fake account and many indecent comments made by some people whose names were found in the friend-list of Aleem's profile.

He said they were also looking for the persons who made the vulgar comments on the fake account

Interesting! Good to know that even while online, we have rights, but this MID has not physically assaulted or even met anyone outside the forum. I don't know how serious a case like this would even be taken unless if some signs of someone getting physically hurt was there. I know people are getting emotionally hurt and this type of cyber bullying also affects the mind, but I don't know if any authority would be wanting to help. Even when people have killed themselves due to cyber bullying, the case was not brought out until the victim died. It's sad!

Oh cyber crimes are seriously looked at these days especially in developed countries.
Due to terrorism worldwide, all internet can be traced quite easily.
It is very advanced and sophisticated now.
With Google satellite cameras we can check house addresses in most parts of the world.
In USA I am sure they monitor everyone, they are very advanced.

Yeah, in USA they even monitor our e-mails. They see everything we type and everything we access on the web. Perhaps then maybe someone can try their luck against the MID by using the law.

I am sure they will investigate all complaints. They cannot take a risk.
These days it is very sophisticated and no one can run.

This is a really new and interesting part of the law which throws up many questions. You'll have quite a tough time prosecuting MIDs on IF for 'cyber crime' because the are not really posting genuine members' pictures, personal info or contact details the way the guy in the story did. Also, since IF members are from all over the world, with places as far as Canada, New York, London and Delhi, which jurisdiction's law would be applied?
