As a child I was very shy and did not have too many friends. At the age of eight, I discovered acting. I acted in a play and thought it helped me a lot as a person. Most of my childhood memories revolve around acting in plays. Studies came first in our family, followed by sports. I was in the school cricket team and was also the captain of the table tennis team. I was the youngest of three brothers and most of the time, we played table tennis for fun. My elder brothers were pranksters. They committed a lot of mischief for which I got punished. Nonetheless, I had a lovely and enjoyable childhood. I still clearly recall one very interesting incident in school when I was in class VIII or IX. I was made monitor of the class because of my acting ability and aptitude for sports. One day when the teacher entered the class, we were all making a lot of noise. She got angry and told me: "Give me the names of the boys who have been making noise." I knew the names of the boys but also knew that if I gave their names, they would be suspended from school. So I stood up and said that the entire class was responsible for the ruckus. I thought our teacher could not possibly throw everyone out. The principal of the school called me. She was very cross with me. She insisted that I reveal the name of the culprits, and threatened to suspend me if I did not. I did not know what to do. I apologised but was still suspended. I was told by the principal to come to school a couple of days later with my parents. The next day, all my classmates stood in front of the principal's office and said that they would not join the class until I was called back. They held me in high esteem because I had not given out the names of the students. |
