Hi Folks,

I am a graduate student at NYU-Poly, doing research on the representation of women in Indian television, and am currently looking at the occupation of the female characters shown in the Hindi serials.

I would really appreciate it if people on this list could send me a few brief responses with the names of some of the key characters in this show and the occupation they hold (there can be more than one female character from a single serial) –even the serials which used to be aired in the 90s are welcome. The kinds of details I am looking for are as follows:

Any interesting details about her work

(such as is she good at her job, is she ambitious, is her work environment good)

Neetu Sethi Daggar: Sargun Mehta

Mili Sethi Mathur: Hunar Hali

Anita Tarneja Sethi:Devyani Shiv

Her occupation:

Simi Sethi Tarneja: Lecturer in DU

Neetu Sethi Daggar: Sat at home

Mili Sethi Mathur: Was shown as in college

Simi Sethi Tarneja:

Lecturer in Delhi University: Full time shown solving others problems. Always putting her family first over her husband Abhi Tarneja in spite of him being the most loving husband (he did love her a lot and it was claimed Simi loves her husband Abhi too). So probably not a competitive lecturer.

Neetu Sethi Daggar:

Sat at home, was an unwed mother, married to another OmiSinghDaggar and created problems for everyone at home and for her Husband

Mili Sethi Mathur:

Was shown as in college, later was shown to be molested, later on fell in love with her BIL who helped her and created tensions for him going to the level of trying to seduce him.

Manju Sethi:

Housewife or rather you can call it as home breaker always wanting to please society and never actually cared about her children's well being.

Anita Tarneja Sethi:

At home, went to create a rift in her in-law's place, caused trouble for her own brother, went on to plan her FIL's murder.

So Tammy, you might have the clear cut scenario about how women are depicted in the serial.

And that basically this serial never highlighted the importance of working women in today's society
