While Akshay Kumar's success run to the top with a hit in Housefull got diluted with a mediocre Khatta Meetha, he gets tough competition from Ajay Devgn, a surprise contender and dark horse this season with not one but three superhits — Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge, Rajneeti and Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. The two have starred in many action bonanzas in the past.
Trade analysts are bucking up for an interesting takkar between these two stars as both, reportedly, are the only ones on whom rides Rs 100 crore plus in the next quarter. Ajay has Toonpur Ka Superhero, Aakrosh and Golmaal 3 in store, Akshay's forthcoming films include mega-budgets Action Replay and Tees Maar Khan.
The latter, some say, has the edge as he's also bagged a lot more endorsements and also a TV show. Close on their heels is the mass favourite Salman Khan (Rs 50 crore approximately) and young turk Ranbir Kapoor (anything between R s40-60 crore).
But despite a Kites behind him, trade pundits still believe that Hrithik Roshan (Rs 60 crore) could turn out to be the scene-stealer with Guzaarish.
Trade analyst Amod Mehra says that the year has been an interesting one so far. "It's thrown up a surprise winner in Ajay, who's been an underdog. The way he's fought his way out of action to comedy is amazing," says Amod.
According to trade analyst Komal Nahta, "The year's also seen interesting performances irrespective of the box-office results like Arjun Rampal (Rajneeti), Imran Khan (I Hate Love Stories) and John Abraham (Aashayein)."
