Sholey and Ramayan are not right examples to refer in this context, because there the story revolves around the Hero. When the story revolves around the negative character, the situation is opposite.

Protagonist(main lead) of a literary work need not be a positive character. You can even find references on the internet....or may be you could google the term "anti hero/heroine".....

"Main Lead"(Protagonist)" and "Hero"...may not be same.. If the story is focused on negative character.....according to the story plot- the anti hero becomes protagonist

Shakespeare's "Macbeth" is a famous literary evidence-where protagonist of the story is a negative character....
the famous english movie "Dracula"..and Shahrukh Khan's "Darr" are examples of movies where protagonist is an anti hero. Some people sympathise with them...some love to hate them...but that doesn't take away the fact..that they are the main leads.

well said hima....and i have been wanting to give the example of macbeth for a long time. Macduff is the character who can be called the epitome of positive heroism there...but Macbeth, the antagonist, the murderer, nonetheless stays the main character.he is killed by Macduff n yet it is read as Macbeth's tragedy and not Macduffs glorious story.

and i wud also like to refer to the question of ramayana...if there is any literature buff here(esp. a bong) he must have read Meghnad Vadh -The epic poem by bengal's pioneer poet m.m. dutta (another dutta 😃)...anyway the point is, there the epic has been subverted.ravana's son Meghnad is shown as this sage-warrior who was wrongly killed while he was praying to god.

so its a question of perspective...if the antagonist has the power to sway the readers/audience away from the protagonist then yes..he does become the 'main lead'.
