Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 36 - DD ko phoola se nafrat hai?

Geet enjoyed the plane ride much more now that she knew what to expect. It didn't take very long to get back to Delhi but the car ride home took a few hours due to a couple of traffic accidents that brought the already heavy Delhi traffic to a standstill. While driving on Mahatma Gandhi Marg road due to detour, Geet mentioned that Nandini Aunty had taken her to Humayun's Tomb. Maan asked if they had visited any other sites. Geet gave him the full list, which included Akshardham Temple, India Gate, the National Museum, but complained that she had yet to see Raj Ghat or visit the National Gandhi Museum. Maan suggested that they should go together the next day, to which Geet happily agreed.

When they arrived home, Geet hurried inside to see Savitri while Maan took care of their luggage. Not seeing any of the servants, Geet wandered around on her own, trying to find Savitri. She wasn't in her room and she wasn't in Geet and Maan's bedroom or the nursery. Geet also tried the kitchen and the library, but to no avail. Finally, while walking around the guest rooms, Geet heard Savitri's voice coming from one of them.

Running into the room, she cried out, "Dadiji, we're home," and then stopped, surprised by what she saw. "Mamiji?"

"Surprise!" exclaimed Devya as she walked over to give Geet a hug.

"I didn't know you were coming, Mamiji," said Geet as she returned Devya's hug.

"When I found out that you and Maan were going out of town for a few days, I decided to come for a visit and keep Didi company."

"How long are you staying?"

"I'll be here until Sunday night."

"That's hardly any time at all. Can't you stay longer, Mamiji?"

"I'm afraid not, Beti."

Savitri could see that Geet was beginning to tear up. To stave off the tears she said, "Don't worry, Geet. We'll make the most of Devya's time with us. When Maan let me know you were coming home early, I took the liberty of inviting Mrs. Verma and Pinky over for dinner, as I know you haven't been able to spend too much time with them."

"Really? That was so thoughtful. I should go see about arranging dinner."

Geet started walking away, but Savitri quickly stopped her. She told Geet that everything was already planned. Savitri wanted Geet to let Maan know, and then take some rest because the trip home was sure to have been tiring. Geet remembered the plans she and Maan had made for the next day, and told them to Savitri. Savitri thought it was a great idea, and suggested that she, Nihal and Devya would come with them.

Geet went back to their room and found that Maan was in there with their luggage. She was about to tell him that Mami was visiting when she noticed what he was doing. Maan had opened his suitcase and was starting to put his clothes away. Geet quickly walked over to him, telling him to stop. When Maan asked why, she reminded him that she was the one whose responsibility it was to put his clothes away.

"Come on, Geet. Don't be so silly. It's just a few clothes. You have your own you can put away."

Geet did not like hearing Maan say she was being silly. He was not holding to their deal and that upset her. It may have been a small thing, but some how it didn't feel that way to Geet. She burst into noisy tears, shocking Maan. Not having expected her to cry, he rushed over to her and started asking what the matter was.

"Geet, what's wrong? Is it the baby? Are you in pain? Sit down and tell me what's the matter."

Sobbing, Geet said through her tears, "You're the matter! You promised. You promised that even though you would choose your own clothes, I could still take care of them and put them away for you."

"Is that all?" asked a relieved Maan.

"Is that all!" repeated an outraged and still crying Geet. She started hitting him with her fist, yelling, "You dusht daanav! Bilkul dusht daanav! You promised me and now you act like breaking that promise is no big deal. I hate you!"

"Geet, I didn't mean it like that. I just meant... Will you stop hitting me and calm down? I just meant that it's good you're only upset, not in pain or anything like that."

"You think it's good that I'm upset?"

Maan watched in horror as Geet started crying more than he thought was humanly possible, curling up in a ball on the bed. No matter how he tried to reason with her, she wouldn't stop crying. Finally Maan could think of nothing to do but give in.

"Sweetheart, stop crying, please. It's not good for you or the baby. You're right, I did promise that you could put my clothes away."

"You're just saying that to make me stop crying," whimpered Geet. "You don't really mean it."

"No, I mean it."

"You won't change your mind later?"

Maan promised Geet he would not change his mind. After Maan used his handkerchief to wipe Geet's tearstained face, Geet got up from the bed and began putting both her and Maan's clothes in the proper places. She also told Maan about Mami's visit, and how she, Mamu, and Dadi would accompany them on their outing the next day. Maan was disappointed, as he wanted to spend time alone with Geet, but he could tell she was happy to have Mami and Mamu there. After getting out of the last crying situation, he didn't want to start another one. He was even willing to act happy that instead of a nice quiet dinner, he would be the lone man amongst a group of five talkative females, just to see a smile on Geet's face.

Maan was virtually silent during dinner, preferring to let the others talk amongst themselves, especially as it seemed the 3 most important women in his life were determined to do nothing but tease him. In response, Maan spent most of the time glaring as he ate. The rest of the time he did his best to gaze at his beautiful wife without being caught by anyone. When the meal ended, Maan was relieved to make his escape by taking an important phone call. Through silent communication, it was determined that Geet and Pinky would be sent off to spend some time together, while their elders had some important conversation over tea.

Geet and Pinky made their way to the gardens and began walking around. Geet asked Pinky how Uncleji was getting along and if there had been any progression in her relationship with Adi. Pinky cheerfully told how after meeting her father, Adi had started offering to give Pinky a ride to and from work. She was sure that he would soon ask her out on a date.

"That's enough about me. Tell me about your honeymoon with DD....sory, I mean Jiju."

"It wasn't a honeymoon. It was just a short trip."

"Okay, how was your trip, then."

"Fine."

Pinky noticed that Geet wasn't being her usual, bubbly self, and asked, "Geet is everything alright? You seem, I don't know... not your usual self."

Geet said that she was fine, but Pinky didn't believe it. Pinky pressed Geet about the problem until finally Geet broke down, and told her about the attack in Hoshiarpur. Pinky was shocked and gave Geet a big hug as she tried to comfort her. Geet was most worried that Savitri would find out, so she made Pinky promise not to say anything to anyone. Pinky agreed.

"It's good that Jiju was there and took care of those goons. He's simply the best! Lekin, I don't get how you were alone when they came. I didn't think Jiju would let you out of his sight."

Geet remembered about the argument between Maan and her, which she had forgotten, and tried to avoid the topic. "Oh....well, we just ....um...."

Not able to figure out how to cover up the issue she finally admitted that they had a fight. Pinky commented that they seemed to fight a lot. Geet admitted it was true, but that this time had seemed different. This time she was doing what he wanted and he still started yelling at her.

"He asked for my input and when I gave it he starts yelling at me and saying mean things. Dusht daanav!"

"Dusht daanav?" asked Pinky, confused.

"Haan, tumhara DD." Pinky gasped, not able to believe that Geet called Maan such a name. She wanted to know what they specifically had been talking about.

"The house is going to have a garden and I was talking about what kind of flowers I wanted to plant. Now, you tell me what I was doing that warranted that kind of response?"

Pinky hit her head in frustration and said, "Arre, DD ko phoola se nafrat hai, nafrat! Samjhi?"

"What? How do you know?"

Pinky just rolled her eyes and said, "Everyone knows. DD has threatened to fire people who brought flowers to work. There was one incident that happened before I started working, but it's still talked about. The daughter of some client sent him a bunch of roses, and he was SOOOOO angry. He sent those roses back with some note and her father was livid. He canceled his contract with the company, but DD didn't care."

Geet was shocked that Maan would do anything that jeopardized a business deal. It seemed that maybe Maan wasn't angry at her specifically, just that she had mentioned flowers. Geet couldn't figure out why he just didn't tell her that he hated flowers. She might have still tried to persuade him, but at least they could have discussed it instead of fighting.

Later that night, while Maan was using the bathroom, Geet sat on their bed, looking at the picture of the young, school aged Maan, as she often did secretly. She thought over everything Pinky had told her, and how she herself had thought that Maan's reaction was unusually odd. The more she contemplated everything, the more she thought that there was some problem that she needed to know about. This couldn't be just a simple case of not liking flowers.

Geet's dilemma was how to get Maan to agree to talk to her about it. She didn't want to start another fight, she just wanted to understand her husband. Remembering the clothing issue earlier, Geet had and idea. It might be a bit devious, but she felt it was necessary. In order for her idea to work, she had to be believably upset. Geet tried to think about the things he had said to her and remember how mean they were.

When Maan came out of the bathroom he saw Geet sitting on the bed, with her face turned away from him. He found this odd and asked her if something was wrong. Getting no response he walked over to her and turned her to face him. He was once again faced with the sight of Geet in tears, a sight that he couldn't tolerate. He demanded to know why she was crying.

"You said that I don't matter!"

"What? I never said that, I would never say that."

"Yes, you did," said Geet giving a convincing sniffle.

"When?"

"Yesterday you asked me 'who did I think I was', and when I said 'your wife,' you told me that I didn't matter."

Maan clenched his jaw in frustration, wishing that they could have just forgotten the whole thing, but this was Geet. Nothing ever worked with her like he thought it would. Seeing her tears, he knew he would have to do something, he didn't want her to start crying like she had been earlier that day.

"That's not what I meant at all. Look, Geet, when people are irritated they get angry easily and say things. It doesn't mean that you should take it seriously." Geet was still crying, so Maan had to continue. "You know me, Geet. You call me dusht daanav, dus sir wala Ravan, I don't know what all. You're right. When I'm angry that's exactly what I am, but I don't want you to take it personally."

"How can I not take it personally? It feels personal when the whole thing started because I didn't know something about you that I should have."

"What are you talking about now?" said Maan, afraid that he already knew.

"Maan why is it that Pinky knew my husband hates flowers, but I didn't know? In fact, it's not just Pinky who knows, but everyone, apparently. Everyone but me!"

Maan clenched his jaw and looked away. "Well, now you know. Can we just leave it at that?"

"I don't think so. This isn't just a case of not liking flowers. Maan, I know you. There's something else, something that's wrong. You might get angry with me, but if it was just you not liking flowers, you would have explained it to me." Getting no response Geet continued, trying to break through to him. "Maan, you know everything about me. All the horrible, most upsetting facts of my life, you know them. Having you know my past is a great strength to me. Can't you share your burdens with me, the same way I've let you share mine?"

Maan got up from the bed and walked over to the window, clearly trying to control his emotions. Geet knew he didn't want to tell her, but she couldn't let him shut her out. She also got up and walked over to stand next to him.

"Please, Maan," she pleaded tearfully, "won't you talk to me?"

"Geet, you don't understand! This is something I haven't even talked to Dadima about. Please, just let it go."

Geet grabbed Maan's hand firmly with her own. "Maan, I'm your wife. If you can't share it with me, who can you share it with?"

Precap:
I'm sorry I teased you guys into thinking Maan's past would be revealed in this part, but I couldn't, it was already getting too long. Don't worry, coming up Geet gets Maan to spill the beans regarding the flower hating thing, and I'll just tell you that it's got nothing to do with Sameera.
