In the 90s Hindi cinema witnessed the rise of a set of actors who achieved cult like adulation and became huge stars as a result of that. There was Aamir Khan who generated craze with QSQT, Salman with Mayne Piyar Kiya and SRK with DDLJ. Among the ladies there was Madz, Kajol, Juhi and Aish each of them with their own brand of appeal.

But who are the present day SRK/Salman/Aamir and Madz/Kajol/Juhi/Aish? Sure there is Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor. Among the males there is Abhishek and youngsters like Ranbir. But these actors havent generated the kind of hysteria like their seniors.

I cant imagine Ranbir or Abhishek single handedly giving huge hits or making succesfull stage shows in Europe like SRK or Salman have done.

Do you agree?

well as i can see it..ts cz B'wood has now lost wt it stood for..innocence..sweetness..culture n beautiful romances.the last i saw those adorable movies from 90s onwards is in 2004-06 period..after that B'wood movies have taken such a drastic transformation..

if we wanted H'wood movies we'll watch them..n we expect smthing way different 4m B'wood..wish we'll again get those mushy n uniquely B'wood stories again..
IHLS seems to have taken a good step towards wooing that sweet magic once again...hope they all get back on track..cz its that innocence that the heroes n heroines possessed that made us fall so hopelessly in love with them during those magical times...

Most people seem appealing than they ever were in retrospect, especially Madhuri. As far as her acting is concerned it took her long before she started performing consistently. Now that she's left, she's hailed like she never was... I guess the newer lot deserve a little more credit than they get.

I don't think it's lost its appeal in any way. Yes, today, what's different is that you cannot predict the outcome of any movie. You get a Kites that becomes a flop whereas unconventional movies like Dev D or A Wednesday that hit right the spot. But isn't that what makes it beautiful, interesting and enthralling?

I think it's because we now have a mature, more literate, more educated audience. One that judges quality and quantity and then decides. I find it beautiful really if you ask me, especially since the last two years, where only really deserving movies have got a box office success. It goes on to prove that true hard work, talent and sincerity counts, no matter which Mr. X produced it, which Mr. Y directed it, or which Mr. Z acted in it. It shows signs of a sensible and intelligent audience, that was so far lacking in India.

I don't say hit movies of those times weren't good. To say something like that would be insensible and foolish. However, in my honest opinion, I think we've reached a good balance in this industry where three songs+two drama scenes+one popular actor do not make a movie. And that's a good thing, by far, a VERY good thing....

I agree with someone who said BW is becoming more like HW! But I would one am happy! I'm sorry but I rather watch films that are intelligently written than watching illogical, melodramatic, over the top scripts and performances! I guess the magic is lost for many reasons...this being one, but also there's no more privacy/mystery anymore! Everything is overly publicized and beaten over the head! There's way too much exposure and gossip!
Also the present day stars don't seem as glamorous off screen as they do on screen! I blame technology for that! FB, twitter, camera phones, etc. make stars appear like ordinary people where back in the day stars were STARS! There was so much fascination and fantasizing about them, but now it's like I said over exposure! Also I feel like the stars today are known less more there acting and more for there personal life! There's a difference between being a star and a actor! The star lack that star quality...the personality, the wittiness, and the charisma and charm! Not all newcomers, but most! Also there seems to be more newcomers now than ever before! Remember the olden days where only 3 men ruled the film industry: Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Raj Kapoor! Then came the era of the 3 Khans, and now if you have a hit film you're in the running for the top! Times a changin'!!
As for the actresses...more roles are being written for actresses where the can carry the film! I rather the newcomers be less appealing but produce historic and magnificent charaters and cinema!

Actually I think they're more appealing ! Coz I never liked SRK/Kajol (well only in KKHH that's it) /Madhuri (NEVER liked her) or any of those lol ! Out of them , I only liked Aamir , Juhi and Aish ! I think cinema is getting better , now we have movies that cater to different audeinces , which we didn't earlier .

I am fond of the newer lot , especially Kareena , Ranbir , Sonam , Deepika and Abhay Deol .

But I partly agree with sweet coco on the privacy thing : the stars earlier had a certain exclusivity to them , now they're too accesible to create that 'olden day magic' you seem to be speaking of .

You make a good point. And finally, there's this factor to consider: a LOT of the current young crop of actors were thrust into showbiz not by any inherent drive or talent, but by yesteryear filmstar parents and other family connections. You could say Aamir and Salman had family connections, too, yet they still generated their own following and had charisma. But now the crop of young actors is so diluted with nepotism that it will take some time for true talent to emerge out of the dredge of mediocrity.
