Reminder: This Round the people that post their ratings in threads (with at least a sentence of reason) will have their ratings counted MUCH more than just a poll vote.

Just wanted to inform the song for Kavita is "Qayamat Ho" not Maar Dala. I should've change this earlier, but it's not too late at all as only 1 poll vote and nothing had been posted in thread.

Introduction

I could have gone with other, more popular songs by Kavitaji, but I chose this one because I feel that it is one of the very few film songs to showcase even a small part of the range of her talent.

If I could, I would post her jugalbandi with Pandit Jasraj, or her Punjabi songs with Ustad Ghulam Ali. Or her album 'Dil Ki Awaaz' - but that's not available in mp3 anywhere on the internet.

Singers' talent tends to get limited in playback, but private music lets them explore the boundaries of their art. Sonu Nigam did this through his album 'Classically Mild' and Shankar Mahadevan did it through 'Breathless' - would these two legends have got the opportunity to sing such great songs in films? I think not.

Qayamat Ho - A Risk

Anyway. Back to 'Qayamat Ho'. It is a risk. Why? Because Kavitaji is paired with the talented but arguably more popular Sonu Nigam. People might even feel he had more lines and perhaps overshadowed her. But in my eyes, she overshadowed him in the sur department by holding her notes unwaveringly and handling the harkats beautifully. She also matched him in emoting the song perfectly. Notice how she brings naughtiness and playfulness in her voice, which complements Sonu's chhed-chhaad.

Her Classical Base

The song is also a risk because it is not well known or even heard of before. But I didn't want to go for a safe option that people will have heard before (songs from Taal, Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, for example) - I wanted Kavitaji to show off her classical base. The song starts with a medium tempo. Increases tempo later on. The full range of notes is utilised, from high to low, standing notes to 'jumping notes'. I have full confidence in the song because it is composed by Ismail Darbar, who is arguably the best composer for Kavitaji. His album 'Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya' is one of the few to get 10/10 ratings by professional reviewers.

Then in the end we get a dose of sargam taans - that's a nod to Shreya Ghoshal in 'Mere Dholna'. I wanted to show that the taans performed by Shreya can be rendered by Kavitaji too. Indeed, Shreya may be considered Kavitaji's successor for becoming a leading female playback singer with a strong classical base.

Score

As always, Kavitaji's voice is sweet, pure and flowy, without any flaws at all. I hope the audience appreciates the effort put into this song. And I hope they enjoy listening to something different.

TEN ON TEN for a complete performance by a complete singer.

Postscript

Anybody interested in listening to the ghazal-styled songs from Kavitaji's private album 'Dil Ki Awaaz' can find the Windows Media links here:

Ishq Mein, Le Deke Muqaddar Mein, Apna Daaman

Dil ki awaaz hoon, saanson mein basalo mujhko.
Main KAVITA hoon, tarannum mein sajalo mujhko.
Dil ki awaaz...

I am the heart's voice, keep me in your breaths.
I am a poem, string me on a melody.
I am the heart's voice...

⭐️Please send Kavitaji, the Heart's Voice, to the Final⭐️

Anyway. Back to 'Qayamat Ho'. What can I say? Two of the greatest singers of our times, really showing us what singing is. They reach some really high notes - and Kavitaji does this utmost perfection without any hint of shrillness, stress or shakiness in her voice.

Her expressions are apt and perfectly pitched throughout.

In the end, she does some taankaari.

(It's a bit late in the UK - so I'll flesh out this review later)

A complete performance by a complete singer.

TEN ON TEN.

i wish u had put up the jugalbandi i really loved it

Its a qwali song, she starts her part with aapke dil me shararat, aapke lab pe shararat, sar se lekar paw tek, aap mai hai bas shararat. Simple lyrics but beautifully sung with aalaps at the end of each stanza. I rate her 9.5 out of 10

Great singing by Kavitaji as usual! Though the song hasnt been much popular but I must say her singing is really impressive. As the competition now has become really intense & tough to judge, & now its hard to be diplomatic as the competition has almost reached its end. I did expected something like a hum dil de chuke sanam or something for this round but after listening to kavitajis rendition I felt really overwelmed. But I also felt it doesnt match up to the excellence of shreya & alka too in this round.
So I shall rate it a solid 8.5

In this song, Kavita ji is jut the opposite her competitor, Alka ji. She has a really sweet voice but she doesn't do full justice to the mood of the song.On a scale judging Kavita ji's mood, I'd rate her very good and not outstanding. I also felt that Sonu ji clearly overshadowed her, ecause he had much more control over his voice and feel compared to Kavita ji. Nevertheless, Kavita ji was spot on on the high notes, which were just right. You could see her voice cracking once or twice while trying to add some harkats, to show some feeling, in the song.

An 8.5!
