Why do we like Indian music? Perhaps folks, like I mentioned before, it gives you scope. And loads of it. Scope for experimentation, perhaps?
Yes, experiments is one thing that's very risky. And observations with inferences is utterly unpredictable. Until now.
The track "qayamat", sung by the country's two leading singers-sonu nigam and kavitaji, is one such track that comes in my books as "experimental."
You get to hear different sides of a playback singer, utterly important for music, because versatility is a key component and a key differentiating factor that gives singers more to learn and do new things.
But the big question is-has the duo succeeded?
Lets begin.
Folks, this track should not be judged by popularity or whether the film was a hit or a flop. It makes sense to listen and then draw conclusons because Indian music has some great tracks which have been forgotten yet are brilliant.......
Count this in one of those. And give full marks to the duo for getting together and sing this brilliant composition.
This track takes time to gel, but trust me, the more you listen, the more you like it and the effort thats put into it takes you by surprise. If you are a typical listener and get bored by listening to this track twice, stay away. Its not for you. but if you really are an appreciator and love music to the core, then this makes for one hell of a composition to listen and rekindle the good moments of life.
This song is a mix of qawwalli plus folk with a hint of romantic harkats thrown it. Its sheer brilliance. Ismail Durbar's USP at its best.
Ismail has taken a risk of keeping the scale almost flat with very limited scope for increase or decrease. But getting the maximum out that limited range has earned big rewards for him.
Sonu starts with something which would not really send your pulse racing, but hey, wait till the song progresses. It hits a new low. And appears flat. thats about it.
The graph then shoots up dramatically and sonu brings out the best in his voice. Change in expression works and reaps brilliant rewards. Enter kavitaji. and the feel increases. And you get intrigued into it.
She starts flat, but again picks up her voice and increases her throw without loosing her control. Thats insane. And just brutal. Kavitaji's "other side" at her best.
It sends you goosebumps in the middle when her roller coaster like expressions add to the charm. Low, then high, then variation in her tempo, again middle, again her variation with the tempo is like doing 3 things at one time. Ultimate test of your vocal chord. And its just avantgarde.
The track again gets monotonous. But again sonu jumps into the scene and kavita adds jugalbandi. Its tough, very tough. But it gets into you. And you appreciate. Not the singng, but the finer details and the effort put into it.
At its peak. the fusion of folk and qawwalli is just adorable. And the background music, a fusion of retro qawwalli again with a hint of folk blended into it, adds to the charm. Just arranging this kind of music itself is a challenge and ismail goes great guns to make it succeed at any cost.
The ending. It takes a new dimension of singing in one breath. The jugalbandi hits a new high. kavitaji's raag alaap and sonuji's singing is pure passion. Expression. Pure passion. Voice. pure passion. And there you go, you get a complete all round of a track to listen.
The combination of sonu, kavitaji, chorus plus sheer brilliance of fusion of three genres in one makes it a track that's worthy of this round. And a risk that's reaped off great results.
Pity that the film flopped and this song was forgotten...
Audience, go, get a good set of headphones and listen to it. I am sure that you too will appreciate it.
Yes, its that good. In fact, almost just close to being perfect like sheya's track but shreya's track was in a different league altogether.
9.5/10.👏
Guys let's have some more tens for Kavitaji! The final will be empty without her!
