Lets get to the movie now. Raavan is movie based on simple story of Sita being abducted by Raavan. In this case, Ragini (Aishwarya) has been abducted by Beera (Abhishek Bachchan). The movie fails due to one simple reason- no storyline. The concept was nice to begin with but Mani didn't manage to take it forward to a higher level that he may have imagined it to be in the first place. It doesnt capture viewer's attention at all as the pace of movie is slow and theres nothing to look forward to. Throughout the movie you pray and hope that there will be interesting sequence coming up whereas it doesnt.
The story also takes you to flashback and it might be hard for audience to grasp the whole story at once. The background information is given in bits and pieces forcing audience to create their own assumptions but later they change their viewpoint when whole story is revealed. And it is not a fast paced movie, the audience stares at the screen hopelessly.
The music by AR is great and some tracks have done extremely well however its better to listen to them solely, as it doesnt go with the flow with the movie. It seems as if song is forced upon a situation. If you hear one song in the movie you may not like however when you listen it afterwards, it will make room in your heart. Thok de killi is fast paced track wheras the two songs that stick out in the album are Raanjha Raanjha and Behne de.
And lastly, performances of the lead actors. Abhishek maintains to hold that tough look throughout the movie however his dialouges are little hard to understand as he speaks in certain accent and little fast. His look is convincing at times whereas in some scenes he looks like a normal person wearing rugged out clothes. But again, with this movie Abhishek didn't manage to create wonders for his careers. He hasn't had a solo hit as Drona, Delhi 6, fell flat on the face. In PAA he didn't have much of a role atleast something not convincing or worth admiring. However, Aishwarya's performance shocks the audience the most as its absolutely mediocre performance. Her role isn't that strong in the sense that she doesnt have much screen presence but at times when she has certain scenes to herself, her dailouge delivery fails to create spark.
Overall, this movie has been rejected by the audience due to the lack of strong plot/storyline, strong performances. The audience seems lost throughout the movie and the ending of the movie isn't something really to look forward either. At times you feel you can predict the movie but then other times, you feel you have no clue what is happening in the movie.
It is proven now that movie isn't guaranteed a hit just because it is directed by top-notch director of the industry with huge hits in the past, and great starcast. Movie requires a PLOT, strong storyline that hooks audience right from the beginning. Looking at Kites and Raavan, it surely proves that having a huge starcast, great songs, and premiers in abroad doesnt make movie a hit in audience's perspective.
Good luck to Mani Ratnam in the future and hopefully he has learnt a lesson from all this and will take all the prevention measures to secure his next movie.
This is my personal viewpoint, you are free to agree/disagree. Thank you!
