Are National awards a true exhibit of the singer

I just keep wondering whether the national awards given for music like music direction, singers are all true exhibits of the singers..I mean are singers who have not received any national awards not good singers...becos when you compare like the great kavita krishnamurthy and shreya...shreya has recd 4 national awards but kavitaji not one...so does it make shreya a better singer than kavita?...this is just an example...ur opinions are highly valued.

PS: this question is just to quench my doubts...I am myself a great fan of shreya...so pls shreya fans dont bash me! 😉

Some of the members here already had a huge discussion on the same topic in the MMKM forum. My views are still the same i.e. All Awards Suck Big Time!! It may be an accomplishment in one's career but awards should never be used to judge a singer or music director.

@brahmabul: thks for the reply...yes the way its going many many deserving people are not getting recognised...so we have to accept that we should not bother abt the awards..but a very sad state! 😒

National Award for a singer is to recognize his/her singing ability usually for that year or a particular song. That doesn't mean others are any where less.

According to me Awards are not an important criteria to judge a singers talent. An award is an accomplishment & like an acknowledgement given to a persons work, its like an encouragement. It adds to his/hers credentials. And it is for a particular year. I feel awards given to singers or music directors or lyricist etc arent biased, but many a times there is baised judgement incase of actors, specially incase of starscreen or even filmfare, national awards are atleast given by the government. But this year I was quite shocked to see Saif ali khan getting a national award.

I dont know what happened on MKMM, but are we talking of the same Filmfare awards that people BUY?? 😛 Or the renowned Padma Shree which is awarded to actors like Saif The number of awards that you get is directly proportional to your buying ability or the number of contacts you have in the jury😛

I dont agree that every artist can buy an award. It might be true in Saifs case, he has an influential background. And because of such few people the other artists who get an award due to their genuine talent donot get recognised or acknowledged much because people accuse them that the awards are biased & blah blah....

Big celebrities like Big B, SRK ,etc etc, might have contacts with film fraternity or the jury. But all artists donot have such influence. Shankar Mahadevan got a NA for the song ''Maa", & I feel he was truely deserving that year, but that doesnt make him superior or something, its an acknowledgement to his hardwork. The more hardwork, the more consistensy in singing the more awards you get. Shreya got a NA award for yeh ishq which was not only a superhit song but also unique, it was the best that song for that particular year. Then shreya got an award for a bengali song, & if u listen to it just once u will get the answer why she deserved the award. Then lyricist Prasoon joshi got an award for ghajini, he was truly deserving, the songs in ghajini were beautiful.

Kavita seth & rekha bhardwaaj 2 newcomers got filmfare playback this year, did they buy it?

Do u think Prasoon joshi is influential & paid money to the Govt & purchased an award for himself?

Shreya got an national award for bairi piya her debut song, being from a middle class family, do u think she had soo much influence to buy that award?

Lastly I would say is an award is an achievement or say just like an encouragement. And not all artists have an influential background. Artists like Shankar, Shreya, Prasoon joshi, AR Rehman etc have got awards due to their genuine talent & not any influence.

Saif was a deserving candidate. His performances in Omkara and Love Aaj Kal were award worthy.
