He brought a camera at 19 so that he could charm women!

Little did he know that his photographs would captivate Bollywood.

Rakesh Shreshtha, a byline in most film magazines every month, believes that to be a superstar, "you don't have to be a great actor or a model'you have to be a nice human being."

He has shot so many celebrities that it is hard for him to short-list only a few.

Rujuta Paradkar found out how he captured some of the biggest names in Bollywood on film.

Priyanka Chopra

When Priyanka got into the film industry, things weren't working out for her. She had signed a few films, including the ones with Abbas-Mustan and Mahesh Manjrekar.

In spite of being beautiful, people were not sure whether she could act or not. She was going through a rough phase.

I happened to meet her in Sun City, South Africa, and decided to shoot her. I did several shoots with her. I circulated her photographs to various directors/producers in the industry. I thought she was brilliant and told them so.

My advice to her was: 'You are Priyanka Chopra, and you should behave like Priyanka Chopra.' She carved her own identity.

Then Pravin Prasad, who made Hero with Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, saw Priyanka's photos and took her in the film.

Then she got Suneel Darshan's Andaaz. Now suddenly, she has become a big star. Now, the same film industry really wants her.

From that low phase to what she is today, Priyanka has come a long way. She grabbed the opportunity, and tasted success. Today, she is one of the top women in Bollywood. We share a great equation.

In my picture, I capture different sides to her. In one, she looks fragile, pretty, vulnerable and fresh. In another, she looks hot, aggressive, sensuous, suggestive.

She can depict all these emotions. People think of Priyanka as attractive, not beautiful. In my photographs, I capture both.

Sanjay Dutt

It's always a great experience to work with Sanjay. The man has so much aggression, drive and energy!

I was doing an annual cover for Stardust with Sanjay and a python! He was looking macho with his body exposed and the python coiled around his neck. It was a body shot.

Sanjay was doing great but the python wasn't very camera friendly. He kept getting out of the frame and Sanjay had to keep adjusting. He was trying to hold it. Somehow, he squeezed the python so hard that it died! (laughs). It was a weird experience and a great photo!

My experience with Sanjay is that he is a very cool guy, very chilled out. He has a very Western mind. When you work with him, the atmosphere is very chilled. He is very fast and wraps up soon.

He was the first one to set trends in bodybuilding. To get photographed without a shirt was his style. Salman Khan followed much later.

I have captured his macho look in this photograph.

Preity Zinta

I met Preity at a party.

When I saw her I said, "we're on."

She came to my studio with a backpacker with clothes just stuffed into it. I asked her, "How are you carrying your clothes?"

"That's the way I am," she said.

She carried short dungarees, and cute clothes in one bag.

This was much before her Liril and Perk ads. She was the highly educated girl from Shimla who came to Mumbai with a dream.

I asked my makeup artists Doris and Bharat (Godambe) to check this amazing new girl. I was very excited. I didn't want much make-up.

I wanted to capture her raw look.

Her pictures were sent to Mani Ratnam and she was on [for Dil Se].

Preity is a livewire. Lot of noise. Lots of fun. She is one person who looks good when she talks, so I try to capture that mood.

I have done many superhit covers with Preity. I go for the bubbly look with her.

In this photo, I poured some water on her (laughs). I didn't want the glamour look; I wanted a natural look. She was screaming and having fun.

At first, she didn't think it would work but later she decided to give it a shot. She was shivering when I took this picture. The water was very cold. But I got a great snap and Preity really liked it.

Hrithik Roshan

I met him before Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. I was shooting with his dad Rakesh Roshan on Karobar, starring Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Juhi Chawla.

He is such a well brought-up child. Being his dad's assistant on that film, he didn't need to do so much work. But he would do everything -- from coordinating with stars to editing to directing. He was always on the sets working hard.

I approached him to do some pictures. He had no intention of being an actor at that time. But he agreed to shoot.

We made such interesting pictures.

My favourite one is 'the star is born' [below]. This was taken in a pool. Look at the pose; he really looks ready to take on the world. He has a gentle face, very charming and so humble.

Amisha Patel

I met her before Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. She came to my studio and was very apprehensive. She saw pictures of glamorous actresses and models in tiny clothes and was really nervous. She was uncomfortable about the camera.

"What should I do?" she asked.

"Don't do anything. Just be yourself," I told her.

We tried a new concept for a beauty feature. She has such a fabulous complexion, so we used lot of milk and the natural look.

This picture is about beauty and healthy skin. Amisha hardly uses make-up, and even when she does for films and shoots, she is very particular. She will use the best make-up remover, moisturizer and really maintains her skin.

Kareena Kapoor

I was a bit late to catch up with Kareena. She was already a star.

Kareena has an image of being temperamental, having an attitude and being arrogant. But she is not like that. It is very comfortable working with her.

I wanted to do something different with her image. In my pictures, you will see another side of Kareena. I wanted to capture the softer side, her gentle side.

It was a challenge to change her look. It was a slow start because we did not know each other. But my annual shoot for the Stardust cover with Kareena and Vivek Oberoi was amazing.

Before the combination shoot, I did some solo shots of Kareena. I asked her to do whatever she likes in front of the camera. And she moved effortlessly.

This is my favourite picture of her, where she is lying down and relaxing. I had asked her to think of a romantic experience and feel good. I captured her softer romantic side, which is more charming and appealing.

Till date she says it is her favourite picture too.

Sridevi

Sridevi can really switch on and off. She always gives fantastic pictures.

I have worked with her on so many films, from Himmatwala(1983) to her last film. It was a long journey and time just passed by.

She is very professional and disciplined. She is very different from Rekha.

Sridevi is very versatile. You will see a different Sridevi in her early films like Himmatwala, Mawaali, Tofa, then in Mr India, and from there to Khuda Gawah.

Finally, in Chandni and Lamhe she looks classic, fully polished.

Manisha Koirala

Manisha is my kind of beauty. She was absolutely new to Mumbai when she came to my studio.

I was shooting when she walked in. The moment I saw her -- her raw beauty sans make-up -- she looked so real, so genuine.

Nothing about her is synthetic.

She doesn't need make-up or [great] hairstyles like some models. You see her simple pictures and feel good.

That first shoot with her was so beautiful that I sent the pictures to Subhash Ghai who instantly signed her for Saudagar.

I captured a different mood of Manisha with not much make-up. It was an original portfolio. And it turned out well.

Her confidence level was very high. I knew she was here to stay.

Rekha

She emits positive energy wherever she goes. She is full of energy. At times, she is like a kid -- bubby, laughing and joking. At other times, she will be the opposite. She is very mature and focused.

It's a misconception that Rekha tells photographers and directors what to do. It's a team effort and she is full of suggestions.

During my shoots, I have to keep in mind that everyone knows she is the most gorgeous person. But I also try to achieve a character-based picture.

My favourite picture with her is an Egyptian look with lots of accessories and drapes. She designed the clothes herself! It was her idea, because she wanted to do something different and she had this particular Egyptian look in her mind. I made her look like a royal princess with lighting and effects.

But I enjoy the down-to-earth Rekha that I have captured the most -- the girl-next-door, candid kind of look.

Rekha does her homework very well. She knows what exactly to do today, tomorrow or the day after.
